BACKGROUND: Few cases have been reported in children and adolescents of sigmoid diverticulitis. Most of the case reports in medical literature are associated with true congenital diverticula and genetic diseases of collagen synthesis.
CLINICAL CASE: 13 year-old female who was admitted to General and Endoscopic Surgery service with diagnosis of complicated appendicitis. Laparotomy was performed finding complicated sigmoid diverticular disease. Lavage, sigmoidectomy and primary anastomosis were performed. The histopathological findings reported a perforated pseudo-diverticulum of the sigmoid co…

PURPOSE: Diverticulitis of vermiform appendix is known as a rare cause of acute appendicitis, most of which are diagnosed after surgery. We compared appendiceal diverticulitis with acute appendicitis to study the clinical characteristics of appendiceal diverticulitis.
METHODS: Among 1,029 patients who received appendectomy from January 2009 to May 2011, 38 patients with appendiceal diverticulitis (diverticulitis group) were compared with 98 randomly collected patients with acute appendicitis (appendicitis group) during the same period. Patients' characteristics, clinical features, laboratory …

Caecal diverticulitis is an uncommon phenomenon in western countries. The clinical diagnosis is often difficult as it mimics other acute abdominal conditions like appendicitis, colitis or neoplasia. Diagnosis is often made at operation. Operative strategy has been controversial and there is no broad consensus emerging. We report the case of a 71-year-old woman, known to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, who presented acutely with right iliac fossa pain. A clinical diagnosis of appendicitis was made. At laparoscopy, a solitary, inflamed, gangrenous caecal diverticulum was found. A lap…

We report the case of a patient with a pelvic abscess and a malignant pancreatic tumor. The management of this complicated diverticulitis included radiological drainage and surgery. This abscess was due to a peritoneal carcinomatosis originating from the pancreas, which is an extremely rare cause of intestinal perforation.

Jejunal diverticulosis is a rare acquired-disease which courses asymptomatic in most cases. In spite of the fact that there are some publications of this entity in pediatric patients, most symptomatic cases have been found in adults. Reported herein is the case of a patient that presented to the emergency room with signs and symptoms suggestive of an acute abdomen. After diagnostic workup and operative management, presence and complications of a jejunal diverticulum were found to be the cause of the abdominal pain.

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulitis is an infrequent disease that must be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain.
CLINICAL CASES: We present 10 cases of Meckel's diverticulitis diagnosed at Hospital Ramón y Cajal (Madrid) between 1985 and 2007. There were eight males and two females with a mean age of 27.5 years. Nine cases presented as a pain in the right lower quadrant suspicious of acute appendicitis, and one case presented as bowel obstruction. Appendectomy + diverticulectomy were performed in those cases with preoperative diagnosis of appendicitis, and diverticu…

Giant colonic diverticulum is a rare condition, and the usual site is the sigmoid colon. In this report, magnetic resonance imaging was performed in a patient with lower abdominal pain. The modality was useful for the evaluation of giant sigmoid colonic diverticulitis and the differential diagnosis.

We describe the case of a 45-year-old woman with a ureterocolic fistula caused by colonic diverticulitis. She had a 10-year history of intermittent left flank pain that had not been treated. The fistulous tract between the left ureter and sigmoid colon was confirmed by retrograde urography and a barium enema. A nephroureterectomy was successfully performed.

Immunosuppressed patients are susceptible to complicated diverticulitis, but reports of this complication are scarce in heart graft recipients. To estimate the prevalence of acute diverticulitis in heart graft recipients, we retrospectively reviewed the cases of diverticulitis in a series of 143 patients who underwent orthotopic heart transplantation in a period of 10 years. Six (4%) of these developed acute diverticulitis and required colectomy. All of them were male patients and were older than 50 years. Four patients underwent urgent laparotomy and colon resection with end colostomy (Hartma…

Colonic diverticulosis is a pathology of high incidence in normal population during the last decades of life. About 2-5 per 100 of patients admitted because of this disease are below 40 years old, and in this group of patients diverticulitis tends to be very aggressive with a high number of complications. We report a clinical case of acute perforation of sigmoid colon due to diverticulitis in a ten year old child who was treated surgically by means of resection of the sigma and primary end-to-end anastomosis. We did not find in the literature consulted any cases of this illness under twenty ye…

In patients with suspected acute diverticulitis, plain abdominal radiographs may demonstrate free gas in the abdomen. Ultrasound can indicate the nature of disease but is not sufficient to assess the extent of the inflammation. If perforation is suspected, a water-soluble contrast agent should be used to demonstrate diverticulitis and peridiverticular abscess. Computed tomography is ideally suited for the evaluation of the disease. it permits the radiologist to tell the clinician the exact extent of the extramucosal inflammation and the involvement of adjacent organs and structures.

Diagnosis of cecal diverticulitis remains a dilemma. Preoperatively it can mimic appendicitis, and intraoperatively the surgeon is confronted with an inflammatory mass that may masquerade as a neoplasm. We reviewed 18 cases of pathologically documented cecal diverticulitis and one case of solitary diverticulitis of the ascending colon. Ileocolonic resection was done in 16 patients, and three patients had local resection. Patients having local resection had greater morbidity and a significantly longer hospital stay. There were no deaths. We have found ileocolonic resection to be safe and effect…

Transverse taeniamyotomy has been in use for over four years in the surgical correction of the muscle abnormality of diverticular disease. E … drainage of the diverticula obstructed by inflammation. Four patients are presented with localized diverticulitis who had simple transverse taeniamyotomy from which they quickly recovered. This operation justifies continuing study as it may increase the surgeon's range of response over one end of the spectrum of acute diverticulitis.
