Hand bites from domestic animals are extremely common. Though many may initially appear benign, it is important for treating physicians to be aware of the factors that place patients sustaining animal bites at additional risk for infection. As clinicians, we must be able to efficiently diagnose and treat these patients properly to avoid the morbidity that animal bites can provoke. The current paper reviews the evaluation and management of domestic animal bites to the hand.

Novel nontoxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae was isolated from a domestic cat with severe otitis. Contact investigation and carrier study of human and animal contacts yielded 3 additional, identical isolates from cats, although no evidence of zoonotic transmission was identified. Molecular methods distinguished the feline isolates from known C. diphtheriae.

Seven of 18 elk on a deer farm were found by the official Rose-Bengal agglutination test (RBT) and tube agglutination test to be brucellosis reactors/suspects. A 14-year-old cat was presented for corneal rupture of the right eye and bulla formation of the left cornea. It was diagnosed with acute bullous keratopathy, based on clinical and histopathologic examination. BACKGROUND: Most studies and work on domestic violence against women are aimed at helping victims, Studies aimed at detecting those at risk of domestic violence are few. Risk identification has important implications for early detection and prevention.
METHODS: A risk scoring tool was developed and tested on 466 antenatal clinic attendees at 3 levels of health care in Zaria, Nigeria.
RESULTS: The prevalence of domestic violence was 11.8%. The sensitivity of the tool was 96.6% and specificity 11.8%. The positive predictive value and accuracy were 13.7% and 22.5% respectively.
