Real-time tracking of neighborhood surroundings and mood in urban drug misusers: application of a new method to study behavior in its geographical context.

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive behaviors may be more fully understood and efficiently prevented by ambulatory tools that assess people's ongoing experience in the context of their environment. METHODS: To demonstrate new field-deployable methods for assessing mood and behavior as a function of neighborhood surroundings (geographical momentary assessment; GMA), we collected time-stamped GPS data and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) ratings of mood, stress, and drug craving over 16 weeks at randomly prompted times during the waking hours of opioid-dependent polydrug users receiving methadone main

Stimulant drug misuse in patients presenting to level 1 trauma centres: a retrospective analysis of 80 000 patients in Canada and the United States.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing global misuse of stimulant drugs, there is a paucity of literature regarding stimulant use among trauma patients. The primary aim of this study was to assess hospital mortality among patients with stimulant intoxication who presented to level 1 trauma centres in Canada and the United States. Secondary outcomes included emergency department mortality, hospital length of stay, and admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of data from the Trauma Quality Improvement Program, including patients presenting emergently to par

Perceptions of Harm and Reasons for Misuse of Prescription Opioid Drugs and Reasons for Not Seeking Treatment for Physical or Emotional Pain Among a Sample of College Students.

BACKGROUND: Since the early 1990s, the United States has seen a significant increase in the prevalence of prescription opioid misuse. Despite benefits prescription opioids provide, misuse can be fatal. OBJECTIVES: The current study was designed to investigate the prevalence of prescription opioid misuse, perceived harm of misuse, and reasons for misuse for physical or emotional pain instead of seeking professional medical or mental health treatment. METHODS: Survey data were collected in the fall of 2013 via an online survey to a random sample of 668 students from a public Midwestern univers

Parental Opioid Misuse and Adolescent-Reported Positive Parenting Behaviors: An Analysis of Parent-Child Dyads From the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

PURPOSE: Past studies emphasize positive associations between parental opioid misuse and adverse outcomes for children and families yet neglect to understand whether opioid misuse interferes with positive parenting behaviors, such as checking on homework or engaging in serious discussions with an adolescent child. METHOD: We analyzed data collected from parent-adolescent dyads (N = 24,900) surveyed for the 2014-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, specifically examining relationships between parents' past-year opioid misuse or heroin use and adolescent-reported parenting behaviors. Prescription Opioid Misuse and Suicidal Behaviors Among US Veterans: A Cross-Sectional Study from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Suicide continues to be a serious public health issue for the US veteran population as its prevalence has skyrocketed over the last 15 years. This cross-sectional study estimates the prevalence of suicidal behaviors and prescription opioid misuse among veterans and identifies associations between suicidal behaviors and misuse of prescription opioids using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The findings show that approximately 3.7% of all veterans in this sample experienced suicidal behaviors, while nearly 3.0% reported misusing prescription opioids. Veterans who misused pres

French national addictovigilance follow-up of zolpidem between 2014 and 2020: evolution of drug abuse, misuse and dependence before and after the regulatory change.

BACKGROUND: Since the appearance of zolpidem on the market, the occurrence of serious cases of abuse, misuse and dependence have come to the attention of authorities. In view of the increase in the number and severity of cases among zolpidem users and the predominant presence of zolpidem in falsified prescriptions, the French Health Authorities implemented part of the narcotics regulation for zolpidem in April 2017. The objective of this article was to describe the evolution of the abuse, dependence and misuse of zolpidem. METHODS: We used three data sources: (i) zolpidem is a reimbursable an

Prescription drugs with potential for misuse in Irish prisons: analysis of national prison prescribing trends, by gender and history of opioid use disorder, 2012 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacotherapy is essential for the delivery of an equivalent standard of care in prison. Prescribing can be challenging due to the complex health needs of prisoners and the risk of misuse of prescription drugs. This study examines prescribing trends for drugs with potential for misuse (opioids, benzodiazepines, Z-drugs, and gabapentinoids) in Irish prisons and whether trends vary by gender and history of opioid use disorder (OUD). METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional study between 2012 and 2020 using electronic prescribing records from the Irish Prison Services, covering all pris

Past-year use or misuse of an opioid is associated with use of a sedative-hypnotic medication: a US National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Prescription use and misuse of opioids are linked to greater sleep disturbance. However, there are limited data on the prevalence of sedative-hypnotic medication use among persons who use opioids. Therefore, this study examined whether past-year sedative-hypnotic use among persons who used/misused opioids was higher than among individuals who did not use opioids. METHODS: Data were acquired from the US National Survey on Drug Use and Health for 2015-2018. Use of a sedative benzodiazepine (temazepam, flurazepam, triazolam) or a Z-drug (eszopiclone, zaleplon, zolpidem) was exa

National polydrug use patterns among people who misuse prescription opioids and people who use heroin. Results from the National Household Survey on Drug Use and Health.

BACKGROUND: Polysubstance use among people who misuse opioids (PWMO) is highly prevalent, but understudied. We defined, estimated, and analyzed national polysubstance use patterns among PWMO using National Household Survey on Drug Use and Health data (2017-2019). METHODS: We obtained estimates of past-month patterns of polydrug use using cluster analysis and latent class/profile analysis. We considered misuse of prescription opioids and use of heroin, cocaine (including crack), marijuana, alcohol, and "other" substances. RESULTS: We identified a five-cluster solution for binary indicators of

Pillars and Pitfalls of the New Pharmacovigilance Legislation: Consequences for the Identification of Adverse Drug Reactions Deriving From Abuse, Misuse, Overdose, Occupational Exposure, and Medication Errors.

Rationale: The aim of this study is to investigate if following the implementation of the Regulation EU/1235/2010 and the Directive 2010/84/EU there was an increase of individual case safety reports (ICSRs) deriving from a medication error, abuse, misuse, overdose, or occupational exposure. Other objectives are the identification of drugs mostly involved in such cases, to establish if the codification of aforementioned conditions is performed correctly and, whenever codification errors exist, to identify predictors of codification errors. Finally, we estimated the magnitude of these errors on

"He Was the Story of My Drug Use Life": A Longitudinal Qualitative Study of the Impact of Partner Incarceration on Substance Misuse Patterns Among African American Women.

This NIH-funded longitudinal qualitative study explored pathways through which partner incarceration affected substance misuse among African American women. Four waves of semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 substance-misusing African American women whose partners had recently been incarcerated. Data were collected in Atlanta, Georgia, during 2010-2011. Transcripts were analyzed using grounded theory methods. Analyses suggest that partner incarceration initially precipitated multiple crises in women's lives (e.g., homelessness); over time, and with formal and informal support, wom
