A simple system of grading the endoscopic appearances of duodenitis is described. There was a good association between the degree of duodenitis recorded using this method and that obtained from a histological grading system in a group of duodenal ulcer patients and a group of dyspeptic patients with no endoscopic evidence of duodenitis. Endoscopic assessment is recommended as a reliable guide to the presence of duodenitis. Recent advances in biopsy techniques using fibreoptic instruments have refocussed attention on the condition on non-specific duodenitis. Investigation of the topography of duodenitis and its relationship to possible aetiological factors and to duodenal ulcer calls for a proper histological classification. Such a classification is proposed based on the subjective appearances and a quantitative examination of 747 fibreoptic biopsy specimens in a wide range of clinical conditions.

We describe a patient with acute cholecystitis and duodenitis associated with Churg-Strauss syndrome. A 36-year-old male, who had been healthy, had abdominal pain following high fever.
