[Pituitary dwarfism in a German shepherd dog (author's transl)].

Pituitary dwarfism has been described in more than 20 German shepherd dogs. Some cases probably were caused by persistent cysts of Rathke's pouch. This is the first histopathological, immunohistochemical and endocrinological study. A 13-month-old, 7-kg, dwarf purebred German shepherd bitch with alopecia and hyperpigmentation was admitted to the clinic for euthanasia. Retardation of growth was noticed when the dog was about two months old. No littermates had this condition. Two subsequent breedings from the same parents produced normal offspring. The clinical parameters in our dog (hematology, …

[A new (brachymelic) type of primordial dwarfism (author's transl)].

Second report of an apparently new type of primordial dwarfism characterized by severe intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, striking craniofacial deformities and a peculiar osteochondrodysplasia. The major clinical findings are microcephaly, hypotrichosis, bulging eyes, prominent nose, micrognathia and short extremities. The osteochondrodysplasia is characterized by short and bowed humeri and femora with absent ossification of the femoral necks, small and dysplastic iliac wings, strikingly retarded ossification of the epiphyses and shortened metacarpal I and middle phalanges II-V. Po…

Diabetes mellitus and sexual ateliotic dwarfism: a comparative study.

The incidence of diabetic retinopathy was determined in 38 diabetics and 31 sexual ateliotic dwarfs deficient only in human growth hormone (HGH). The age and sex distribution were approximately the same in each group. The incidence and pattern of glucose intolerance were similar in diabetics and HGH-deficient dwarfs. The majority of diabetics (21 of 38) and HGH-deficient dwarfs (26 of 31) exhibited insulinopenia after glucose, mixed glucose-beef meals, and the infusion of l-arginine. A smaller number of HGH-deficient dwarfs (5 of 31) and diabetics (8 of 38) had normal or augmented absolute ins

Achondroplastic dwarfism. Effects of treatment with human growth hormone.

Two male patients with achondroplastic dwarfism aged 7-5/12 and 14(1/2) years were treated with human growth hormone 5 mg daily. Both showed nitrogen retention on balance studies, the older second patient to a marked degree. In the younger patient, height increased from 95.4 to 106.3 cm on hgh 5 mg daily alone for 14 out of 24 months. The rate of growth approximately doubled during the first two treatment periods as compared with the pre-treatment rate. In the second older patient hgh was administered 5 mg daily intramuscularly for 21 out of 33 months. Growth from 129.6 cm to 137.8 cm occurred…

Microcephalic Osteodysplastic Primordial Dwarfism, Type II: a Clinical Review.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: This review will provide an overview of the microcephalic primordial dwarfism (MPD) class of disorders and provide the reader comprehensive clinical review with suggested care guidelines for patients with microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism, type II (MOPDII). RECENT FINDINGS: Over the last 15 years, significant strides have been made in the diagnosis, natural history, and management of MOPDII. MOPDII is the most common and well described form of MPD. The classic features of the MPD group are severe pre- and postnatal growth retardation, with marked microce…

Lenz-Majewski hyperostotic dwarfism: reexamination of the original patient.

In 1974, Lenz and Majewski gave a short description of a 2-year-old girl with generalized hyperostosis, proximal symphalangism, syndactyly, brachydactyly, cutis laxa, mental retardation, marked hypertelorism, and enamel hypoplasia. This disorder was later named Lenz-Majewski hyperostotic dwarfism. We describe the reexamination of the original patient at the age of 30 years.

[Rathbun syndrome (hypophosphatasia). Clinical aspects: dwarfism and Bechterew symptoms].

We report on a 43-year-old patient with short stature (hyposomia), allegedly the result of vitamin-D-resistant rickets, previously treated for ankylosing spondylitis. In addition, a uricostatic drug therapy was also necessary because of hyperuricemia with gout attacks. Further examinations revealed the accurate diagnosis: Rathbun's disease. Hypophosphatasia is a hereditary disorder characterized by a deficiency of liver/bone/kidney alkaline phosphatase activity in serum and tissues with defective bone mineralization, bone deformities, short stature, early loss of teeth, and craniosynostosis. Thanatophoric dwarfism; drugs and antenatal diagnosis; a case report.

Thanatophoric dwarfism is not as rare as once thought. We present this case because of the possible association with drug administration and the probability of diagnosing this condition antenatally.
