This report describes the case of a 27 year old woman presenting at 19 weeks' gestation with epigastric pain and dysuria. Initially diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, she re-presented 10 days later with acute abdominal pain and haemoperitoneum. The diagnosis of placenta percreta was not made until laparotomy. This case highlights placenta percreta as a rare but serious complication of pregnancy that may become increasingly frequent as the rates of caesarean delivery rise. Dysuria-frequency in 78 patients was treated for 3 consecutive days with 300 mg trimethoprim administered in a single dose at night. Symptomatic cure was noted in 90% of the patients one week after initiation of therapy. In this investigation a positive urinary culture was found in 74% of the patients and bacteriological cure was obtained in all patients but one. A new infection was registered in 2 patients when controlled one week after the start of therapy. Dysuria is a relatively frequent complication after prostatic adenomectomy. The authors review 107 patients with this complication and demonstrate that radiological investigation, including a micturition study, preferably after IVU, shows the presence of an obstructive cause for the dysuria in the vast majority of cases (92.5%). Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) infection, a sexually transmitted infection (STI), causes cervicitis and may cause reproductive sequelae and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Dysuria is a rare, but nevertheless severe postoperative complication associated with single-session bilateral triple pelvic osteotomy. Two cases are described in which contrast radiography of the lower urinary tract was used to diagnose urethral compression due to pelvic canal narrowing. Relief of the pressure on the urethra was achieved with an external fixation device, which distracted the acetabular fragments of the pelvis. In both cases the dysuria was resolved. The significance of this complication and its possible causes, especially regarding surgical technique, are discussed.

A valve of Guerin, or lacuna magna, is a common anatomical finding in young boys. It occasionally causes dysuria and/or bloody urethral discharge or spotting due to its location distal to the external urethral sphincter. We report on 10 patients who underwent transmeatal marsupialization of a valve of Guerin between 1984 and 1991, and review the embryology and clinical presentation. Urinary tract infection (UTI) was the only pathology found among 42 children presenting at the paediatric outpatient department with pain or straining on micturition. 18 (42.9%) had cystourethritis proven bacteriologically. 3 of these had gonococcal urethritis and were all males aged less than 3 years. Four had vasical schistosomiasis. No definite diagnosis could be made in 24 (57.1%) cases.
