Awareness of cancer and its associated factors for parents of adolescents and young adults: A cross-sectional study.

Cancer is a common health problem worldwide. Early cancer education for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) is important for the prevention or early detection of cancer. In this questionnaire-based cross-sectional study, we examined the cancer awareness among parents of AYAs. Japanese adults with junior or senior high school children were included in this study. The cancer awareness measure (CAM) was used to assess cancer awareness, and the survey was conducted in December 2021. Warning signs, barriers to seeking help, and risk factors were surveyed using an online anonymous questionnaire. In

Human African trypanosomiasis in travellers to Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Clinical scores such as quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA), early warning score (EWS), and universal vital assessment (UVA) are commonly used as screening and prognostic tools in sepsis. However, consistent findings across different regions and hospital settings remain limited. This study aims to evaluate the performance of these clinical scores and identify predictors of survival in septic adults admitted to the ICU. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted from October 10, 2023, to October 9, 2024, involving adults admitted to the intensive care uni

Children neuropsychological and behavioral scale-revision 2016 in the early detection of autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: The Children Neuropsychological and Behavioral Scale-Revision 2016 (CNBS-R2016) is a widely used developmental assessment tool for children aged 0-6 years in China. The communication warning behavior subscale of CNBS-R2016 is used to assess the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and its value of >30 points indicates ASD based on CNBS-R2016. However, we observed that children with relatively lower values were also diagnosed with ASD later on in clinical practice. Thus, this study aimed to identify the suitable cutoff value for ASD screening recommended by the communication

Adjusting EWS scores for altitude above sea level: is it necessary to predict sepsis mortality in the emergency room?

BACKGROUND: Sepsis mortality can be significantly reduced with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. It is crucial to have tools that enable the early identification of patients at high risk of sepsis mortality from the triage stage. The National Early Warning Score (NEWS) and recently the International Early Warning Score (IEWS), are widely used for this purpose. However, its oxygenation parameters are primarily validated in populations at sea level. Given that patient oxygenation varies with altitude, there is a need to investigate the applicability of this scores at different altitudes

Association between liver stiffness measurement and portal vein thrombosis among patients with cirrhosis: A cross-sectional study.

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a severe complication of liver cirrhosis, yet reliable early warning methods are lacking. As PVT is strongly associated with portal hypertension, liver stiffness measurement (LSM) serves as a noninvasive marker for assessing portal hypertension. Hence, the association between LSM and PVT requires further exploration. A total of 202 cirrhotic patients were enrolled and divided into PVT (n = 29) and non-PVT (n = 173) groups. Baseline data, laboratory indices, and LSM were compared between the groups. Risk factors were analyzed using logistic regression, and the di

Early warning systems and end-user decision-making: A risk formalism tool to aid communication and understanding.

In this work, we introduce a formalism to highlight the role of decision-making implicit in the setup of early warning systems (EWSs) and its consequences with respect to loss avoidance for end users. The formalism, a close relative of the cost/loss approach, combines EWS verification scores with traditional expressions of risk from the point of view of the user. This formalism articulates in mathematical format many well-known issues surrounding EWS usage, offering a conceptual anchor for concepts that otherwise may seem to wobble among the multidisciplinary perspectives participating in the

Construction and Validation of an Early Warning Model for Predicting the 28-Day Mortality in Sepsis Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

BACKGROUND: In the intensive care unit (ICU), approximately 45.6% of patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) also presented with sepsis, and this cohort exhibited a significantly higher 28-day mortality rate compared to sepsis patients without COPD (23.6% versus 16.4%). A novel nomogram is necessary to predict the risk of mortality within 28 days for sepsis patients with COPD. METHODS: Clinical data from 501 sepsis patients with COPD were sourced from the MIMIC-IV database. These data were randomly allocated into a training cohort and a validation cohort in a 3:1

A machine learning model for predicting short-term outcomes after rapid response system activation.

AIM: Maintaining rapid response team (RRT) response quality is difficult. A system that supports RRT assessment could potentially contribute to medical safety. Although rapid response system (RRS) triggers have been well-studied, studies on the prediction models of short-term prognosis after RRS activation are scarce. We aimed to develop a model to predict short-term outcomes after RRS activation using machine learning. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used the In-Hospital Emergency Registry in Japan, a multicentre RRS online registry. We collected data on patient demographics, treatm

Breast awareness mobile apps for health education and promotion for breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Lack of knowledge, poor awareness, and attitude are barriers to breast cancer (BC) screening participation. The ubiquitous usage of mobile phones makes it a perfect platform for delivering interventions to increase knowledge and awareness in screening, a strategy for early identification of BC. However, although numerous applications for BC prevention are available on major mobile phone platforms, relatively few have been tested in scientific studies to determine their efficacy. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of BrAware Apps in increasing the knowledge of BC ri

Comparison of Deep Learning Approaches Using Chest Radiographs for Predicting Clinical Deterioration: Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The early detection of clinical deterioration and timely intervention for hospitalized patients can improve patient outcomes. The currently existing early warning systems rely on variables from structured data, such as vital signs and laboratory values, and do not incorporate other potentially predictive data modalities. Because respiratory failure is a common cause of deterioration, chest radiographs are often acquired in patients with clinical deterioration, which may be informative for predicting their risk of intensive care unit (ICU) transfer. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to c
