Larval parasite occurrence in two killifish species, Argolebias guarani and Argolebias adrianae (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) inhabiting two ephemeral ponds.

Ephemeral ponds provide unique opportunities to study host-parasite interactions under contrasting environmental conditions. We assessed the occurrence of larval parasites in two closely related rivulid fishes, Argolebias guarani and Argolebias adrianae, inhabiting geographically proximate but hydrologically isolated ponds. A total of 121 individuals of A. guarani and 30 of A. adrianae were examined. Parasites were recorded only in A. guarani, including a nematomorph larva, a proteocephalidean metacestode, a telorchiid metacercaria, and a diplostomid metacercaria, whereas A. adrianae showed no

Biocompatible Excipients from Microalgae: Advancing Protein and Peptide Therapeutics through Sustainable Formulation Strategies.

As a distinctive and sustainable raw material for pharmaceutical excipients, microalgae have emerged as a significant source of biopolymer compounds with immense functional and medicinal value. The pharmacoeconomic importance of key biopolymer compounds isolated from microalgae, such as fucoidan, ulvan, laminarin, and paramylon, having mucoadhesive, bioactive, and controlled release properties that meet the standards of advanced drug delivery systems, has been discussed in this review. Due to the compact cultivation requirements of microalgae that fix significant quantities of carbon dioxide f

Parasitology at the heart of the "One Health" concept: a longstanding alliance illustrated by cysticercosis control.

The "One Health" concept, emphasizing the interdependence of human, animal, and ecosystem health, has gained renewed global attention and institutional support from the World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, United Nations Environment Program, and World Organization for Animal Health. Here we underline that some principles of parasitology are embedded in this concept. As early as the 19th century, Rudolf Virchow affirmed the unity of human and veterinary medicine, a vision long practiced by parasitologists through their multidisciplinary work on zoo

Changes in the malaria transmission profile in a low-endemic area of the Brazilian Amazon: a cause for concern.

Since 2015, there has been a renewed global commitment to malaria elimination. Understanding the dynamics of the disease in regions with declining cases is essential to prevent reintroduction. This study aims to analyze the epidemiological indicators of malaria in Maranhao, a Brazilian state with a significant decline in cases. This is a descriptive, retrospective, and ecological study, with data from the malaria surveillance system, from 2003 to 2022. Demographic, spatial, temporal, and parasitological variables were analyzed. During this period, 83,517 malaria cases were reported, of which 6

Dynamics of attachment and emotion regulation in daily life: uni- and bidirectional associations.

Attachment theory proposes that the activation of the attachment system enacts emotion regulation (ER) to maintain security or cope with insecurity. However, the effects of ER on attachment states and their bidirectional influences remain poorly understood. In this ecological momentary assessment study, we examined the dynamics between attachment and ER. We hypothesised that attachment states and ER influence each other through time. Specifically, we hypothesised bidirectional short-term cycles between state attachment security and reappraisal, state attachment anxiety and rumination, and stat

Changes in the Patterns and Characteristics of Youth ENDS Use over Time.

Research on youth use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has explored the correlates of initiation and use; however, little is known about the factors that predict continued youth use of ENDS. We used an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) burst design to explore both daily variability within adolescents over a two-week observation period and variability over time two years later (2018 and 2020). The contribution of device characteristics, motivations for use, contextual factors, and community factors to daily use occasions were explored. Youth participants (n = 35) at the start

Heavy metal(loid)s contamination and health risk assessment of soil-rice system in rural and peri-urban areas of lower brahmaputra valley, northeast India.

The soil-rice system in rural and peri-urban areas of the lower Brahmaputra valley, northeast India was investigated for heavy metal(loid)s using Nemerow's pollution index (PIN) and potential ecological risk index (RI). Potential health risk due to rice consumption grown in the region was assessed in terms of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks. Around 95% of the soil showed acidic nature that ranged from weakly acidic to strongly acidic soil. In terms of PIN, 27.3% of the sampling sites were heavily polluted (PIN≥3), 34.8% moderately, and 37.9% were slightly polluted. The Pb concentration

Two distinct metacommunities characterize the gut microbiota in Crohn's disease patients.

The inflammatory intestinal disorder Crohn's disease (CD) has become a health challenge worldwide. The gut microbiota closely interacts with the host immune system, but its functional impact in CD is unclear. Except for studies on a small number of CD patients, analyses of the gut microbiota in CD have used 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing. Here we employed metagenomic shotgun sequencing to provide a detailed characterization of the compositional and functional features of the CD microbiota, comprising also unannotated bacteria, and investigated its modulation by exclusive enteral nutrition. Based

Aged Buoy-derived Microplastics Alter Photosynthetic Performance and Metabolic Regulation in Pyropia yezoensis without Short-term Growth Inhibition.

Plastic aquaculture equipment can release microplastics into seaweed mariculture zones, yet the effects of these particles on cultivated macroalgae remain poorly understood. In this study, Pyropia yezoensis thalli were exposed to field-aged buoy-derived polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics at 0.1, 1, and 10 mg/L for 7 d. Relative growth rate was not significantly affected, whereas other sublethal endpoints showed polymer-specific changes. PVC exposure was associated with stronger lipid peroxidation, carbohydrate depletion at high concentration, and increa

Change in diversity patterns of fish by cascade dams: comprehensive dataset of eDNA and traditional evidence from the Jinsha River.

The large-scale construction of cascade dams worldwide has profoundly altered river hydrological regimes and habitats, producing significant threats to fish diversity. This study integrated environmental DNA (eDNA) and traditional fishing data to construct a fish dataset from the middle and upper reaches of the Jinsha River (2003-2024). It was used to systematically reveal the spatiotemporal patterns of fish diversity and analyze key environmental drivers. Additionally, the Isolation Forest algorithm was employed to remove 29 outliers from the historical data. Distance-based redundancy analysi

Phenotypic divergence is driven by mobile genetic elements in a heritable insect symbiont.

Heritable microbes profoundly influence insect biology, yet the traits they confer often evolve rapidly and differ among closely related symbiont strains. Despite their importance, we lack a clear understanding of how novel traits arise in symbionts and how this diversity influences host ecology in nature. The aphid facultative symbiont Regiella insecticola is ideally suited to address this question due to strong lineage-specific variation in host benefits. By generating 20 high-quality genomes, we found that Regiella's evolution is driven largely by gene gains mediated by mobile genetic eleme

Outbreaks of Mucorales and the Species Involved.

The order Mucorales is an ancient group of fungi classified in the subphylum Mucoromycotina. Mucorales are mainly fast-growing saprotrophs that belong to the first colonizers of diverse organic materials and represent a permanent part of the human environment. Several species are able to cause human infections (mucormycoses) predominantly in patients with impaired immune system, diabetes, or deep trauma. In this review, we compiled 32 reports on community- and hospital-acquired outbreaks caused by Mucorales. The most common source of mucoralean outbreaks was contaminated medical devices that a

Home oxygen therapy: re-thinking the role of devices.

A range of devices are available for delivering and monitoring home oxygen therapy (HOT). Guidelines do not give indications for the choice of the delivery device but recommend the use of an ambulatory system in subjects on HOT whilst walking. Areas covered: We provide a clinical overview of HOT and review traditional and newer delivery and monitoring devices for HOT. Despite relevant technology advancements, clinicians, faced with many challenges when they prescribe oxygen therapy, often remain familiar to traditional devices and continuous flow delivery of oxygen. Some self-filling delivery-

Impact prediction by looming visual stimuli enhances tactile detection.

From an ecological point of view, approaching objects are potentially more harmful than receding objects. A predator, a dominant conspecific, or a mere branch coming up at high speed can all be dangerous if one does not detect them and produce the appropriate escape behavior fast enough. And indeed, looming stimuli trigger stereotyped defensive responses in both monkeys and human infants. However, while the heteromodal somatosensory consequences of visual looming stimuli can be fully predicted by their spatiotemporal dynamics, few studies if any have explored whether visual stimuli looming tow

Photic and circadian regulation of melatonin production in the Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus.

Diverse circadian systems related to phylogeny and ecological adaptive strategies are proposed in teleosts. Recently, retinal photoreception was reported to be important for the circadian pacemaking activities of the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. We aimed to confirm the photic and circadian responsiveness of its close relative-the Mozambique tilapia O. mossambicus. Melatonin production in cannulated or ophthalmectomized fish and its secretion from cultured pineal glands were examined under several light regimes. Melatonin production in the cannulated tilapias was measured at 3-h interval

[Specifics of the epidemiology of urinary schistosomiasis in Mauritius].

Early observations on this disease were made in Mauritius by Chapotin (1812) before the discovery of Schistosoma haematobium. Bulinus cernicus, the snail intermediate host, one of the nine species within the B. forskali group, is restricted to the island and the disease is not occurring in the neighbouring islands of La Reunion and Rodrigues. Under laboratory conditions, the snail susceptibility to the Mauritian strain of S. haematobium has been demonstrated. But the infection rate of the snail remains very low and the transmission of the disease is sporadic except in three foci. Its occurrenc
