Evaluation of the synergistic and antagonistic antibacterial effects of pulsed electromagnetic fields combined with ciprofloxacin and nanochitosan.

This study introduces an innovative electromagnetic nano-approach to combat high-severity bacterial infections without relying solely on high-dose antibiotics. We investigate the synergistic potential of extremely low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic wave (ELF PEMW) exposure (< 20 Hz) as a physical catalyst to enhance the bio-activity of ciprofloxacin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (Cipro-C-NPs). This method provides a pivotal alternative for managing Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus in an era of escalating multi-drug resistance. Cipro-C-NPs were synthesized w

Synergy of Extremely Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields (ELFEFs) and Sex Hormones Against Oxidative Stress in Multiple Sclerosis.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation method with neuromodulatory capacity in neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Its therapeutic value is linked to its activity against oxidative stress by activation of antioxidant defenses. The sex hormones, estrogens (E), progesterone (P) and testosterone (T), have demonstrated their power as adjuvants to TMS, improving cortical excitability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of these hormones as adjuvants to extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELFEFs) in the treatment …

Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields Enhance Resveratrol-Induced Apoptosis Through Modulation of Apoptotic Signaling in U87-MG Glioblastoma Cells.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive primary brain tumor characterized by dysregulated cellular signaling and resistance to apoptosis. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) exposure has been reported to modulate cancer-related cellular processes, while resveratrol (RES), a natural polyphenol, exhibits notable antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic actions. Here, we investigated whether 75 Hz PEMF potentiates RES-mediated apoptosis in human glioblastoma U87-MG cells by examining key molecules involved in apoptotic signaling and the transcriptional responses of PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway-related

Electromagnetic fields and oxidative stress: The link to the development of cancer, neurological diseases, and behavioral disorders.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest an association between exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and an increased incidence of malignant, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases. This study aims to elucidate the fundamental principles and plausible mechanisms by which EMFs may influence physiological and pathological processes that lead to disease development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Published reports of oxidative stress, DNA damage, and disease risk related to EMF exposure were examined. The literature review provided the foundation for building a new conceptual model calle…

Histological Analysis of Bone Callus in Delayed Union Model Fracture Healing Stimulated with Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF).

Delayed union and nonunion fractures are clinical challenges for orthopedic surgeons. The development of fracture complications, such as delayed union and nonunion fractures, is still difficult to predict. Various methods are being investigated to improve fracture healing and prevent complications in patients. There are various methods to promote fracture healing, broadly divided into biological, chemical, and physical methods. One of the most widely used physical methods to promote fracture healing is the pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF). This study aimed to evaluate the healing process of

An in vitro Evaluation of the Effect of Transient Electromagnetic Fields on Pacemakers and Clinical Mitigation Measures.

Background: The effect of transient electromagnetic fields on the function of pacemakers is not well-evaluated. There is a lack of effective methods for clinicians to reduce electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) during implantation of pacemakers. This study aimed to evaluate whether a novel method of handling the excess leads in the pocket can lower the EMS of pacemakers and consequently reduce the effect of electromagnetic interference caused by transient electromagnetic fields on pacemakers. Methods: An in vitro chest model was established to simulate the clinical condition of dual-chamber pa…

Extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields activate the antioxidant pathway Nrf2 in a Huntington's disease-like rat model.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique used recently to treat different neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Despite its proven value, the mechanisms through which TMS exerts its beneficial action on neuronal function remain unclear. Recent studies have shown that its beneficial effects may be at least partly due to a neuroprotective effect on oxidative and cell damage. This study shows that TMS can modulate the Nrf2 transcriptor factor in a Huntington's disease-like rat model induced by 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP). Western blot analysis demonstrated

FDTD assessment of human exposure to electromagnetic fields from WiFi and bluetooth devices in some operating situations.

In this work, the numerical dosimetry in human exposure to the electromagnetic fields from antennas of wireless devices, such as those of wireless local area networks (WLAN) access points or phone and computer peripherals with Bluetooth antennas, is analyzed with the objective of assessing guidelines compliance. Several geometrical configurations are considered to simulate possible exposure situations of a person to the fields from WLAN or Bluetooth antennas operating at 2400 MHz. The exposure to radiation from two sources of different frequencies when using a 1800 MHz GSM mobile phone connect…

[Norms and standards for radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in Latin America: guidelines for exposure limits and measurement protocols].

New technologies that use electromagnetic fields (EMF) have proved greatly beneficial to humankind. EMF are used in a variety of ways in the transmission of electrical energy and in telecommunications, industry, and medicine. However, some studies have shown that EMF could be detrimental to one's health, having found an association between exposure to EMF on the one hand, and the incidence of some types of cancer as well as behavioral changes on the other. Although so far there is no concrete proof that exposure to low-intensity EMF is hazardous, researchers continue to study the issue in an a…

Exposure of human peripheral blood lymphocytes to electromagnetic fields associated with cellular phones leads to chromosomal instability.

Whether exposure to radiation emitted from cellular phones poses a health hazard is at the focus of current debate. We have examined whether in vitro exposure of human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) to continuous 830 MHz electromagnetic fields causes losses and gains of chromosomes (aneuploidy), a major "somatic mutation" leading to genomic instability and thereby to cancer. PBL were irradiated at different average absorption rates (SAR) in the range of 1.6-8.8 W/kg for 72 hr in an exposure system based on a parallel plate resonator at temperatures ranging from 34.5-37.5 degrees C. The ave…

A case of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia treated with pulsing electromagnetic fields. 17-year follow-up.

Congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia presents surgeons with one of the most challenging of all orthopedic problems. Various surgical treatments have succeeded only rarely. We report long-term follow-up of a patient with congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia treated with pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) and bone grafting. In this severe case, Bassett type III and Boyd type II, encouraging results were achieved with Boyd's dual onlay grafts and PEMF. Seven years after surgery, skeletal maturity was complete and an unacceptable degree of leg shortening had been avoided.

Protective effect of low frequency low energy pulsing electromagnetic fields on acute experimental myocardial infarcts in rats.

This series of experiments assesses the effect of exposure to low-frequency pulsing electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) in 340 rats with acute experimental myocardial infarcts. The left anterior descending artery was ligated with suture thread, and the rats underwent total body exposure to PEMFs until they were killed. Twenty-four hours after surgery, the necrotic area was evaluated by staining with triphenyltetrazolium chloride. A significant reduction of the necrotic area was observed in the animals exposed to PEMFs compared with the nonexposed controls. Exposure for up to 6 days does not appear …

[Electrosmog as a health risk factor: sources of artificial electromagnetic fields, evaluation of health risk, prevention methods].

In recent years we have observed how electromagnetic (EM) radiation enters our daily life. The strength of man-made EM field is often far above the natural level and this finding has encouraged a large group of researchers to investigate its possible health effect. Non-ionizing radiation and extremely low-frequency electric and magnetic fields have been the subject of intensive theoretical and experimental works since Adey published his observations concerning non-linear and non-thermal biological effects. At the same time an epidemiological material appeared suggesting that EM field generates

[Usefulness of electromagnetic fields in the treatment of hip avascular necrosis: a prospective study of 30 cases].

A series is here reported of 30 hips from 21 patients with the diagnosis of avascular necrosis in different stages (Ficat 0 = 1, I = 4, II = 13, III = 10, IV = 2). Patients underwent external electro-stimulation by means of a electromagnetic field generator, and results were evaluated by NMR at three-month intervals. Lesions were categorized by NMR: < 25%, 25%-50%, and > 50% of involved head volume. The grading of lesions yielded the following distribution: grade 1 = 12, grade 2 = 10, and grade 3 = 7. Results were categorized in "clinical success", "NMR success" and "combined success" when sym

Urban radio-frequency electromagnetic field exposure in New York City.

This study investigates Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Field (RF-EMF) exposure across New York City's five boroughs. The RF-EMF exposure was measured in 39 bands across the 88 MHz to 5.925 GHz frequency range using an exposimeter fixed in a backpack that was worn during walks along 38 predetermined paths in various representative urban environments of the city from September 2024 to May 2025. We calculated the summary statistics (minimum, p25, arithmetic mean, geometric mean, median, p25, p50, p75, p90, standard deviation) in units of electric field strength (V/m) and compared RF-EMF exposure

Visualizing radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure through Voronoi-based maps.

Measuring the exposure of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in a city is a very laborious task. To simplify this process for a city of 200 thousand inhabitants, Voronoi diagrams were used. The city was divided into cells based on the Euclidean distance to a point on the map, and each cell was assigned the value of the electric field measured at that point using a personal exposimeter. The number of cells varied from five to 30 and, finally, one 100. The maps obtained are commented on, using a palette of four uniform colors for the cells, to facilitate their perception. The more cells are c…

Electromagnetic Field Shielding Using Interior Paints Enhanced with Metal Powders.

This article deals with the issue of electromagnetic radiation, specifically methods of eliminating radiation using protective coatings. Protective coatings were created from commercially available fabricated but also recycled metal powders and commonly available interior paint. The aim of the experiments was to produce protective coatings with different qualitative and quantitative compositions and subsequently test their shielding effects. For the preparation of the coatings, mixtures in the form of commercially produced powder with a particle size of <10 μm were used, namely aluminum oxide

Modelling of daily radiofrequency electromagnetic field dose for a prospective adolescent cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields originate from a variety of wireless communication sources operating near and far from the body, making it challenging to quantify daily absorbed dose. In the framework of the prospective cohort SCAMP (Study of Cognition, Adolescents and Mobile Phones), we aimed to characterize RF-EMF dose over a 2-year period. METHODS: The SCAMP cohort included 6605 children from greater London, UK at baseline (age 12.1 years; 2014-2016) and 5194 at follow-up (age 14.2; 2016-2018). We estimated the daily dose of RF-EMF to eight tissues including the whole b…

Instruments to measure environmental and personal radiofrequency-electromagnetic field exposures: an update.

Modern human populations are exposed to anthropogenic sources of radiofrequency-electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs), primarily to telecommunication and broadcasting technologies. As a result, ongoing concerns from some members of the public have arisen regarding potential health effects following RF-EMF exposures. In order to monitor human RF-EMF exposures and investigate potential health effects, an objective assessment of RF-EMF exposures is necessary. Accurate dosimetry is essential for any investigation of potential associations between RF-EMF exposure and health effects in human populations.…
