Filarial elephantiasis among Haitian women: social context and behavioural factors in treatment.

Few studies have addressed the social and behavioural aspects of lymphatic filariasis. The research reported here investigated the ethnographic context of filarial elephantiasis among women in Léogane, Haiti, and focused on explanatory models of the illness, the impact of the disease on women's lives, and the difficulties patients experienced in following a therapeutic regimen provided at a local hospital. Qualitative data were collected through focus group and individual interviews and direct observation of patients enrolled in the treatment programme. Results indicate that traditional unders…

Scrotal elephantiasis associated with follicular occlusion triad: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Follicular occlusion triad (FOT) is an autosomal recessive inherited disease and no more than 3 variants of the triad have been reported. We give a report in which scrotal elephantiasis is a variant of FOT and further perform a literature review. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 41-year-old man came to us because of a large scrotal cyst and generalized skin lesions that had occurred over the past 10 years. The generalized skin lesions consisted of hidradenitis suppurativa on the perineum and back, acne conglobata in the armpit, and dissecting cellulitis of the scalp. He took antibiotics for a l…

Community's knowledge and perceptions about filarial elephantiasis and hydrocele in coastal Orissa, India.

This study assesses people's knowledge and perceptions on transmission, prevention and eradication of elephantiasis and hydrocele, common manifestations of chronic lymphatic filariasis (LF). The assessment was done during mass drug administration (MDA) of the programme to eliminate LF in the State of Orissa, India. A household survey with pre-tested interview questionnaire was conducted in four LF endemic districts of Orissa state, India, where the MDA has been taken place. The sampling units (clusters of households) of the household survey are taken based on (1) urban/rural and (2) type of or…

Adverse reactions following diethylcarbamazine (DEC) intake in 'endemic normals', microfilaraemics and elephantiasis patients.

This paper reports on adverse reactions following a 12-day course of 6 mg/kg diethylcarbamazine (DEC) therapy in brugian filariasis patients in Indonesia. Microfilaria-positive individuals (n = 26), 'endemic normals' (n = 12) and elephantiasis patients (n = 17) were included in the study. Fever, headache and body aches started between 2 and 24 h after DEC intake. Adverse reactions were categorized into 'no or mild', 'moderate' or 'severe' depending on the total reaction score. Four microfilaraemic individuals (15.4%) suffered from severe adverse reactions and their pre-treatment microfilarial …

Endemic non-filarial elephantiasis in Iringa District, Tanzania: a study of 30 patients.

Endemic non-filarial elephantiasis has not yet been described in the central tableland of Tanzania. We report the results of a clinical study in Tosamaganga Hospital, located in the middle of Tanzania (Iringa District). 30 patients with elephantiasis of the lower limbs were studied parasitologically (by blood smears) and clinically. Inguinal lymph nodes were removed from 10 patients and histologically examined. The mineral content of soil samples collected from 4 different areas of the region was assayed by X-ray fluorescence. The clinical, histological, parasitological and epidemiological dat…

Determining Etiology of Elephantiasis and Associated Factors in Hawella Tula, Sidama Region, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis and lymphatic filariasis are the most frequent causes of elephantiasis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine the etiology of Elephantiasis and associated factors in Hawella Tula, Sidama Region Ethiopia. METHODS: From February to May 2024, a community-based cross-sectional survey was carried out to determine etiologies of elephantiasis in selected kebeles (the lowest administrative units) in Hawella Tula district, Sidama region, Ethiopia. Seven kebeles were included in the study because elephantiasis cases were quite high, according to woreda's neglect…

Modelling environmental factors correlated with podoconiosis: a geospatial study of non-filarial elephantiasis.

INTRODUCTION: The precise trigger of podoconiosis - endemic non-filarial elephantiasis of the lower legs - is unknown. Epidemiological and ecological studies have linked the disease with barefoot exposure to red clay soils of volcanic origin. Histopathology investigations have demonstrated that silicon, aluminium, magnesium and iron are present in the lower limb lymph node macrophages of both patients and non-patients living barefoot on these clays. We studied the spatial variation (variations across an area) in podoconiosis prevalence and the associated environmental factors with a goal to be…

[Elephantiasis of the lower limb: Treatment of seven cases using the modified Charles technique].

INTRODUCTION: Lymphedema is an obstructive dysfunction of the lymphatic system characterised by an inability of the lymphatic system to eliminate excess lymphatic load. It can be congenital or secondary. Untreated, it progresses in three stages, the final stage being elephantiasis. We report a short series of 7 cases of elephantiasis of the lower limb treated with the Charles technique. Our aim was to describe the results of the surgical treatment. METHOD: This was a retrospective descriptive and analytical study from January 2010 to December 2020. Patients with at least one lower limb elepha…

Vulval elephantiasis as a result of tubercular lymphadenitis: two case reports and a review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Elephantiasis as a result of chronic lymphedema is characterized by gross enlargement of the arms, legs or genitalia, and occurs due to a variety of obstructive diseases of the lymphatic system. Genital elephantiasis usually follows common filariasis and lymphogranuloma venereum. It may follow granuloma inguinale, carcinomas, lymph node dissection or irradiation and tuberculosis but this happens rarely. Vulval elephantiasis as a consequence of extensive lymph node destruction by tuberculosis is very rare. We present two very unusual cases of vulval elephantiasis due to tuberculou…

Pharmacological Properties of Platycarpha glomerata Extracts-A Plant Used to Treat and Manage Elephantiasis.

Platycarpha glomerata (Thunb.) Less. has recently become a plant species of interest to researchers due to its biological activities and less toxic effects. Therefore, the aim of the study is to evaluate the in vitro anticancer potential and phytochemical constituents of P. glomerata plant extracts. Phytochemical screening and FTIR were carried out using standard methods. The antioxidant activity was accessed by determining its ability to scavenge the DPPH radical and nitric oxide radical, whereas the anticancer activity against prostate (DU-145 and PC-3), human T-lymphocyte (SKU-T), gastric a

Resection and reconstruction of idiopathic scrotal elephantiasis: surgical approach and quality of life assessment.

Scrotal elephantiasis (SE) is a condition considered rare in western industrialised countries but common in filaria prone regions. If no apparent causes are found for SE, it is called idiopathic SE. Medical and conservative therapies are ineffective against idiopathic SE, and surgical intervention is mandatory to treat this disabling condition. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether surgical intervention improves quality of life among patients with idiopathic SE. Herein, we report a case of a 41-year-old man who underwent acute scrotal resection and reconstruction, secondary to haemorrhage f…

A case of elephantiasis nostras verrucosa treated successfully by a new type of compressive garment.

Elephantiasis nostras verrucosa (ENV) is a clinical manifestation composed of hyperkeratotic, verrucous, and papillomatous lesions and dermal fibrosis, which complicate chronic lymphedema. There is currently no cure for ENV, however, several measures have been used to reduce lymphedema and the resultant pseudoepidermal hyperplasia. Supportive dressings and compression therapy still constitute an important part of the treatment. In this report, we present a 69-year-old male patient with ENV developed due to chronic lymphedema caused by venous insufficiency. After failure of healing with convent…
