Nonluteal estrous cycles of 3-week duration are initiated by anovulatory luteinizing hormone peaks in African elephants.

Previous attempts to characterize the estrous cycle of elephants have yielded conflicting estimates of cycle length and LH profiles. In order to establish artificial breeding programs in this species, resolution of these issues is needed. Therefore, four female African elephants housed at the Indianapolis Zoo were studied for approximately 6 mo beginning in December 1994. Blood was collected weekly, and the serum was immediately analyzed for progesterone (P4). Whenever the weekly concentration of P4 was found to be low, blood was collected one or four times per day. All serum samples were assa…

Dual-Locus Metabarcoding Reveals Dry-Season Dietary Differentiation Between Elephants and Impalas in a South African Savanna.

Large herbivores in African savannas experience intense nutritional constraints during the dry season when declining forage quality intensifies competition for limited resources. Sympatric mixed feeders are therefore expected to differ in their use of forage resources, yet specific plant taxa underlying these dietary differences remain poorly resolved. Here, we used dual-locus DNA metabarcoding (rbcL and trnL) to characterise and compare dry-season diets of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) and impalas (Aepyceros melampus) in a semi-arid savanna ecosystem in South Africa. Despite substant…

Into the large ears: otitis externa associated with nematodes, mites, and bacteria in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus).

BACKGROUND: The Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), which is an endangered species, harbors several parasites. Among the ectoparasites that it harbors, ear mites of the genus Loxanoetus have the potential to cause external otitis, an inflammation that may also be associated with the presence of other microorganisms. We assessed the relationships between ear mites, nematodes, yeast, bacterial rods, and cocci sampled from the ears of captive Asian elephants in Thailand. In addition, we discuss the possibility that dust-bathing behavior may be triggered by ear mite infestation, and that this in tur…

Molecular characterization of Fasciola jacksoni from wild elephants (Elephas maximus maximus) of Sri Lanka: a taxonomic evaluation.

Fasciola jacksoni is a significant contributor to the health and mortality of Asian elephants, particularly those in Sri Lanka. Despite the impact of fascioliasis on elephant populations, it is a neglected veterinary disease with limited taxonomic understanding. Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of F. jacksoni were carried out to evaluate its suggested basal position in the Fasciolidae. Adult worms were collected during post-mortem of elephants, and eggs were collected from living elephants in National parks across Sri Lanka. Using the mitochondrial genes nicotinamide dehydr…

Tuberculosis in elephants-a reemergent disease: diagnostic dilemmas, the natural history of infection, and new immunological tools.

Tuberculosis (TB) in elephants has been described since ancient times. However, it was not until 1996 when infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis was identified in a herd of circus elephants that significant research into this disease began. The epidemiology and natural history of TB were unknown in elephants since there had been no comprehensive screening programs, and diagnostic techniques developed for cervidae and bovidae were of unknown value. And, while precepts of test and slaughter were the norm for cattle and deer, this was considered untenable for an endangered species. With no pr…

Bacterial and fungal pathogens isolated from corneal ulcerations in domesticated elephants (Elephas maximus maximus) in Sri Lanka.

Infective corneal diseases are common among the domesticated elephants in Sri Lanka, causing morbidity including blindness leading to loss of revenue to their owners. From 140 elephants of different ages and both sexes, 36 animals (25.7%) had evidence of keratitis, corneal ulcers, corneal opacities, and some had foreign bodies in their eyes. Nine elephants (6.4%) had lesions in both eyes (6.41%). Cultures for both bacteria and fungi were obtained from 26 corneal ulcers, including the nine elephants with bilateral lesions. The other 10 animals could not be restrained for sample collection. Swab…

Prevalence of Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) in Wild and Captive Bornean Elephants (Elephas maximus borneensis) Sampled During Conservation Management Activities in Sabah, Malaysia.

Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) is a leading cause of fatal hemorrhagic disease in juvenile Asian elephants and represents a significant concern for elephant conservation. However, information on the epidemiology of EEHV in Bornean elephants (Elephas maximus borneensis) remains limited. This study investigated the prevalence and subtype distribution of EEHV in wild and captive Bornean elephants in Sabah, Malaysia, using samples collected during conservation management activities including rescue operations, translocation, GPS collaring, necropsies and routine veterinary examinatio…

ACUTE HEMORRHAGIC DISEASE DUE TO ELEPHANT ENDOTHELIOTROPIC HERPESVIRUS 3A INFECTION IN FIVE AFRICAN ELEPHANTS (LOXODONTA AFRICANA) AT ONE NORTH AMERICAN ZOOLOGICAL INSTITUTION.

Acute hemorrhagic disease caused by elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) infection is well recognized as a major threat to young Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) but has been less frequently documented in African elephants (Loxodonta africana). This report describes five sequential cases of EEHV3A infection in African elephants in managed care at one institution. All elephants developed disease within a 4-mo period. The first two cases were 6.5- and 7.5-yr-old females that presented with depressed mentation, anorexia, hematuria, and diarrhea. Both elephants died within 48-72 hr of the…

Ecological function of the 'elephant trunk' upper corolla in Pedicularis species.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The evolution of intricate floral structures is often a direct consequence of pollinator-mediated selection. In buzz-pollinated plants, pollen is released through vibrations, and control of its removal is crucial for maximizing male reproductive success. The genus Pedicularis presents a compelling case, with many species exhibiting a distinctive upper corolla lip, or galea, shaped like a 'beak' or 'elephant trunk'. The adaptive function of this trait has remained mysterious and largely not subjected to empirical testing. We hypothesized that the beak acts as a dispensing t

Frozen elephant trunk: a narrative review of global and temporal trends.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The frozen elephant trunk (FET) repair has transitioned from a niche procedure to a widely adopted strategy across Asia, Europe, and North America. Multicenter registries demonstrate improving early outcomes over time, consistent with learning curve effects. Regional differences persist in case mix, device availability, and utilization. No study has systematically measured these regional differences. We aim to describe the history, evolution, and current landscape of FET worldwide. METHODS: A narrative review of English-language adult studies from PubMed, Google Scho

Warming up the frozen elephant trunk for aortic arch pathology.

BACKGROUND: The frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique is a well-established procedure for chronic and acute aortic arch (AA) pathologies. Over time, practice has shifted from deep to moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA), especially for elective cases. This strategy might, however, impact neurological and renal outcomes. The aim of this single-center study is to assess the safety of very mild HCA (MiHCA) in patients who underwent FET with a core temperature ≥30 ℃. METHODS: Data on all consecutive patients who electively or urgently underwent FET requiring HCA at Cardiac Surgery Unit o

The elephant in the room: Is betrayal trauma associated with borderline personality disorder?

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been found to be closely linked to childhood trauma, particularly betrayal trauma. AIM: In our study, we aimed to investigate the association between betrayal trauma and anxiety among young adults. METHODS: We assessed a total of 305 young adults using a Google form utilizing three assessment tools: the 10-item McLean Screening Instrument for Borderline Personality Disorder (MSI-BPD), the 12-item Brief Betrayal Trauma Survey (BBTS), and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) to evaluate borderline personality traits, betrayal tra

Implantation of frozen elephant trunk (FET)-surgical technique-Thoraflex.

The development of the frozen elephant trunk (FET) prosthesis has revolutionised how we treat some of the most complex aortic pathology, including in the emergency setting of acute type A aortic dissection. The design of the prosthesis is fundamental to the success of the procedure in combination with the surgeon's skill in interpreting the pre-operative scan and procedural planning to juggling the technical aspects of the deployment and reimplantation of the supra-aortic vessels. Furthermore, organ protection strategies and techniques to reduce the complications of neurological and renal impa

Evidence-based frozen elephant trunk practice: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The frozen elephant trunk (FET) allows a single-stage repair of complex arch pathologies due to its stented and non-stented hybrid prosthesis (HP) features. FET inherently has its own related complications including distal stent graft-induced new entry (dSINE), failure of aortic remodelling, endoleak, reintervention, and kinking of the stent. The aim of this narrative review is to discuss the latest evidence regarding the postoperative clinical outcomes of the FET procedure. Another aim is to provide an overview of results achieved using different FET devices on the g

Hospital Reservoirs of Multidrug Resistant Acinetobacter Species-The Elephant in the Room!

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening illness which classically presents with polyuria, polydipsia, and polyphagia that can rapidly progress to severe dehydration and altered mental status from cerebral edema. Younger patients may present with subtle or atypical symptoms that are critical to recognize and emergently act upon. Such patients are often cared for by teams in the emergency department (ED) requiring multidisciplinary collaboration. METHODS: This simulation case was designed for pediatric emergency medicine fellows and residents. The case was a 14-month-old

A Preprogrammable Continuum Robot Inspired by Elephant Trunk for Dexterous Manipulation.

Cable-driven continuum robots with hyper-redundant deformable backbones show great promise in applications, such as inspection in unstructured environments, where traditional rigid robots with discrete links and joints fail to operate. However, the motion of existing continuum robots is still constrained by their homogeneous backbones, and limited to environments with modest geometrical complexity. In this study, inspired by highly deformable elephant trunks, we presented a modular tensegrity structure with preprogrammable stiffness for continuum robots. Then we derived a mechanical model base

Rescue of False Lumen Frozen Elephant Trunk Deployment Intraoperatively.

Endovascular devices have become increasingly available, which has led to an increase in use of frozen elephant trunk stents for extended repair during type A aortic dissection. Frozen elephant trunk deployment is usually done under direct visualization of both the true and false lumen but rarely, the endograft can inadvertently end in the false lumen. This can lead to false lumen pressurization and end-organ malperfusion. Herein we describe a novel intraoperative rescue technique for misplaced frozen elephant trunk into the false lumen, easily executed in a standard operating room using trans

Skin wrinkles and folds enable asymmetric stretch in the elephant trunk.

The elephant's trunk is multifunctional: It must be flexible to wrap around vegetation, but tough to knock down trees and resist attack. How can one appendage satisfy both constraints? In this combined experimental and theoretical study, we challenged African elephants to reach far-away objects with only horizontal extensions of their trunk. Surprisingly, the trunk does not extend uniformly, but instead exhibits a dorsal "joint" that stretches 15% more than the corresponding ventral section. Using material testing with the skin of a deceased elephant, we show that the asymmetry is due in part …
