Ellagic acid impedes carbontetrachloride-induced liver damage in rats through suppression of NF-kB, Bcl-2 and regulating Nrf-2 and caspase pathway.

The use of natural antioxidants instead of conventional treatments is considered effective and safe alternative therapy for hepatotoxicity. Ellagic acid (EA) is a strong antioxidant matter having protecting effect particularly on the liver. Hepatotoxic compounds can cause very heavy damage. Among these chemical hepatotoxins, CCl4 are responsible for the trichloromethyl radical resulting from biotransformation of the liver. The aim of this study was to examine whether EA plays a protective role against to liver damage induced with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in rats. In this study, 36 male wist

Consumption of ellagic acid and dihydromyricetin synergistically protects against UV-B induced photoaging, possibly by activating both TGF-β1 and wnt signaling pathways.

Ellagic acid (EGA) and dihydromyricetin (DHM) are both found in fruits and vegetables are used for anti-aging treatment for the skin. The anti-photoaging efficacy of EGA and DHM was investigated in UV-B irradiated skin in vivo and the involvement of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 and wnt signaling pathways were examined in vitro. HaCaT cells were treated with either 50μM EGA, 50μM DHM or 25μM EGA+25μM DHM before 100mJ/cm2 UV-B exposure, and then oxidative stress and inflammation was measured. The involvement of TGF-β1 and wnt signaling was measured using their inhibitors, respectively, in

Ellagic acid C and aspergone R, two undescribed pyrones from the endophytic fungus Diaporthe sp. CB10100: biological evaluation, molecular docking and molecular dynamics studies.

Two new compounds, ellagic acid C (5) and aspergone R (6), along with four previously identified compounds (7-10), were successfully isolated from the fungus Diaporthe sp. CB10100. Ellagic acid C (5) contains an uncommon tricyclic 5/6/6 ring system. A biosynthetic pathway for 6 was proposed, although additional investigations are needed to elucidate the ethyl biosynthesis mechanism. Both aspergone R (6) and (-)-terpestacin (9) decreased lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced protein expression of iNOS and COX-2. Molecular docking analysis revealed that 6 and 9 potentially interact with the active si

Unripe Rubus occidentalis, Ellagic Acid, and Urolithin A Attenuate Inflammatory Responses in IL-1β-Stimulated A549 Cells and PMA-Stimulated Differentiated HL-60 Cells.

Unripe Rubus occidentalis (uRO) contains various natural polyphenols with beneficial physiological activities and is particularly rich in ellagic acid (EA). EA has ameliorated type 2 inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness in animal models of eosinophilic asthma. EA is metabolized by the gut microbiota to urolithin A (UA), which exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. However, it remains unclear whether uRO, EA, and UA reduce inflammatory responses and oxidative stress in respiratory epithelial cells and neutrophils. In this study, inflammation was induced in A549 (human lung epithelial cel

Ellagic acid from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Scutellaria barbata may accelerates apoptosis in hepatic stellate cells during liver fibrosis via inhibiting miR-182-5p.

Liver fibrosis is usually accompanied by abnormal activation of hepatic stellate cells. Exosomal microRNAs play important roles in the development of liver fibrosis. Our previous study confirmed that Ellagic acid (EA) is one of the main bloodstream components of Scutellaria barbata, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. This study aimed to explore the effects of EA on hepatic stellate cells in liver fibrosis. First, a CCl4-induced mouse model of liver fibrosis was used to evaluate the effects of EA administration on the histopathology and histochemical staining of liver tissue in mice with liv

Dietary Ellagic Acid Mitigates High Stocking Density-Induced Oxidative Stress and Immune Suppression in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio): An In Vivo and In Silico Study.

This study examined the effects of dietary ellagic acid (EA) on growth performance, survival, immune responses, and oxidative status of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to high stocking density (HSD). A 2 × 3 factorial design was used, with two stocking densities (25 and 100 kg/m3) and three EA levels (0, 50, and 100 mg/kg diet). HSD significantly reduced growth performance, as indicated by lower weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR), increased feed conversion ratio (FCR), and decreased survival (p < 0.05). It also suppressed immune responses, including white blood cell count (WBC),

Unripe Rubus coreanus Miquel Extract Containing Ellagic Acid Regulates AMPK, SREBP-2, HMGCR, and INSIG-1 Signaling and Cholesterol Metabolism In Vitro and In Vivo.

Our previous study demonstrated that a 5% ethanol extract of unripe Rubus coreanus (5-uRCK) has hypo-cholesterolemic and anti-obesity activity. However, the molecular mechanisms of its effects are poorly characterized. We hypothesized that 5-uRCK and one of its major bioactive compounds, ellagic acid, decrease cellular and plasma cholesterol levels. Thus, we investigated the hypocholesterolemic activity and mechanism of 5-uRCK in both hepatocytes and a high-cholesterol diet (HCD)-induced rat model. Cholesterol in the liver and serum was significantly reduced by 5-uRCK and ellagic acid. The hep
