Epidural anatomy examined by cryomicrotome section. Influence of age, vertebral level, and disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cryomicrotome section is a means of anatomic examination with minimal artifact ideally suited to delineating details of tissue relationships in the epidural space. In the past, healthy adult lumbar levels have been studied by this method. This report extends observations to other regions of the vertebral column, other age groups, and some abnormal conditions. METHODS: The bodies of 26 adults were frozen in toto soon after death, and the bodies of 2 children were frozen after embalming. Unstained anatomy was revealed by sectioning, and the exposed surface was photogr…

Synchrotron "virtual archaeozoology" reveals how Ancient Egyptians prepared a decaying crocodile cadaver for mummification.

Although Ancient Egyptians mummified millions of animals over the course of one millennium, many details of these mummification protocols remain unknown. Multi-scale propagation phase-contrast X-ray synchrotron microtomography was used to visualise an ancient Egyptian crocodile mummy housed at the Musée des Confluences (Lyon, France). This state-of-the-art non-destructive imaging technique revealed the complete interior anatomy of the mummy in three dimensions. Here, we present detailed insight into the complex post-mortem treatment of a decaying crocodile cadaver in preparation for mummificat

Frontal sinus outflow tract "anatomic study".

Meticulous anatomical knowledge is mandatory to approach endoscopically the frontal sinus area safely and manage its diseases successfully. The aim of this study was to identify the various drainage patterns of the frontal sinus. To illustrate these patterns we performed anatomical dissections of the outflow tract of the frontal sinus in 30 cadaver half heads. We found that the frontal sinus drained anterior to the uncinate process in 23.3% of specimens and posterior to it in 63.3%, while it drained medial to the semilunar hiatus in 6.6%. Our study, however, represents an exclusive assortment

Assessment of formalin preserved and fresh frozen quadriceps tendon graft-suture constructs for load to failure testing: a biomechanical cadaveric study.

PURPOSE: Fresh-frozen specimen availability and cost may be a barrier for initiation of biomechanical studies where soft tissue is used in a construct with other medical devices. The impact of soft tissue preservation method on the outcomes of biomechanical studies in the specific case of graft-suture constructs is relatively unexplored. This study aimed to observe peak loads and failure modes in biomechanical testing of fresh-frozen (FF) versus formalin embalmed (FE) quadriceps tendon (QT) graft-suture constructs for soft tissue fixation in ACLR and assess suitability of FE QT graft construct

Neurovasculature of high and low tie ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery.

PURPOSE: Controversy exists as to whether a high or low tie ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) is the preferred technique in surgeries of the left colon and rectum. This study aims to contribute to the discussion as to which is the more beneficial technique by investigating the neurovasculature at each site. METHODS: Ten embalmed cadaveric donors underwent division of the inferior mesenteric artery at the level of the low tie. The artery was subsequently ligated at the root to render a section of tissue for histological analysis of the proximal (high tie), mid and distal (low ti

Lateral pouch appendix associated with retroperitoneal terminal part of the ileum: a potential diagnostic and surgical challenge.

Knowledge of development and various possible positions of the appendix is important in understanding the pathophysiology of appendicitis. In the present case, we report on a lateral pouch type of appendix in a formalin-embalmed male cadaver. The appendix was found to be situated in a space between the caecum and the lateral abdominal wall. A short band of peritoneum extended from the right iliac fossa to the base of the appendix. The terminal part of the ileum was retroperitoneal and it was vertically situated in the right iliac fossa. Both the ileocaecal junction and the base of the appendix

Anterior tibial tendon insertion: an anatomical study.

Anatomical variations of the anterior tibial tendon insertion were studied by dissection in 44 normal feet of 22 embalmed adult cadavers. Three types of insertion were found. The most common insertion (56.8%) was a division of the tendon into two slips, equal in width, the one slip being inserted into the first cuneiform and the other slip into the base of the first metatarsal. The next most common (27.3%) was a division of the tendon into a large slip, inserted into the first cuneiform, and a small slip, inserted into the base of the first metatarsal. The third type, and least common tendon i

Neuropathologic verification of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in the exhumed American recipient of human pituitary growth hormone: epidemiologic and pathogenetic implications.

Beginning at age 12, a boy with idiopathic hypopituitarism was treated with cadaver pituitary-derived human growth hormone during the period from 1963 to 1969. Fifteen years after the last treatment, the then 32-year-old man developed Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The illness was atypical in showing predominantly cerebellar signs, little mental deterioration, and no abnormal movements or periodic EEG activity. Examination of the embalmed brain, 7 months after interment, revealed the characteristic changes of CJD mainly in the cerebellum and basal ganglia. This case establishes the contamina

Holding donated human bodies in conservation: A novel interactive safe-keeping system meeting high ethical and safety standards.

"Mortui vivos docent". Learning from donated bodies is widely considered a corner stone in pre-clinical education, advanced clinical training, and scientific progress in medicine. Making such use of dead human bodies must, of course, accord with high ethical standards and legal constraints. Piety and respect towards donors require using their remains (i) for valuable purposes, (ii) with what we call 'practical decency', (iii) in an efficient way, and (iv) with the utmost safety for all parties involved. With regard to these goals, practical aspects of preservation, safekeeping procedures (for

Accidental formalin poisoning in a child with acute fatal manifestations: A rare case report.

Formalin is a protoplasmic poison, which poses a potential occupational hazard among morticians, embalmers, pathologists, and hospital staff. The crystal-clear appearance of formalin can be easily mistaken for normal saline, local anesthetics, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, and spirit in health care facilities and water in domestic settings. However, accidental poisoning is extremely rare because of its low olfactory threshold, strong irritant nature, pungent taste, and odor. This is also evident from the scarce scientific literature on this topic. Here, we presented a case of acciden

Ultrasound-Guided Perineural Injection at Guyon's Tunnel: An Anatomic Feasibility Study.

Compression of the ulnar nerve (UN) at the wrist causes neuropathy in the ulnar tunnel (UT), or Guyon's tunnel. In the absence of trauma and motor syndromes, primarily conservative treatment is considered. As in carpal tunnel syndrome, a perineural injection of corticosteroids may be beneficial. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of ultrasound-guided injections at the UT. We performed ultrasound-guided injections of ink at the UN within the UT in 21 limbs from 11 non-embalmed cadavers. In all cases, we stained the perineural sheath of the superficial branch of the ulnar n

An ultrasonographic and anatomical study of carpal tunnel, with special emphasis on the safe zones in percutaneous release.

We examined 40 wrists of 12 embalmed and eight fresh cadavers and defined the relative position of the flexor retinaculum to the neurovascular structure, ultrasonographic markers and safe zones by ultrasonography and anatomical dissection. Both longitudinal and transverse ultrasonographic sections clearly depicted the flexor retinaculum, neurovascular bundles, median nerve, flexor tendons and bony boundaries of the underlying joints. Topographic measurement showed [i] good correlation between the actual extent of the flexor retinaculum and the ultrasonographically determined distance between b

An anomalous left external jugular vein draining into right subclavian vein.

Knowledge of the varying drainage patterns of superficial veins of head & neck, in particular, jugular veins are not only important for anatomists but also for the surgeons operating at this level and to clinicians in general. The variations are important also for interventional radiologists, who perform trans-jugular procedures, such as port implantations and trans-jugular intra-hepatic porto-systemic shunts or selective venous samplings. Results of recent studies report that the superficial veins, especially the external jugular vein, have been increasingly utilized for cannulation to conduc

[MRI in the pre-operative evaluation of lesions of the rotator cuff].

The authors report a series of 38 patients who had been examined by MRI and then operated for a rotator cuff syndrome. The correlation between the description of the cuff lesions after MRI and the surgical observations were excellent for 37 patients. In one case MRI showed a false image of tear of the supra spinatus m. on its anterior edge. This was due to a bad knowledge of the anatomy of the muscle and tendon and to a poor orientation of the frontal cut plane. This study was complete with MRI and anatomic study of 12 non embalmed cadaveric shoulders. The results showed that MRI was very sens

Volvulus of the bovine abomasum and omasum.

Two cows with right-side volvulus (torsion) of the abomasum and omasum were embalmed, and the viscera were dissected to study the topography and mechanisms of the condition. In both cases, the abomasum and omasum were greatly distended and formed a loop with the cranial part of the duodenum. The loop was twisted 360 degrees counter-clockwise, as viewed from the rear or from the right, around an axis through the lesser omentum. The reticulum was drawn caudally on the right side of the rumen by its attachment to the fundus of the abomasum. Study of a model of the stomach and omenta indicated tha

Computed Tomography Study of the Mummy of King Seqenenre Taa II: New Insights Into His Violent Death.

Seqenenre-Taa-II, The Brave, (c.1558-1553 BC) ruled Southern Egypt during the occupation of Egypt by the Hyksos. The mummy was physically examined and X-rayed in the 1960s, which showed severe head wounds that have prompted various theories about the circumstances of his death. We postulated that Computed Tomography (CT) study of Seqenenre-Taa-II's mummy would give insights into the circumstances of his death. We examined Seqenenre's mummy using CT and compared the findings with the archaeological literature as well as with five Asian weapons found in Tell-el-Dabaa. CT findings indicate that S

Anatomic study of the medial side of the ankle base on the joint capsule: an alternative description of the deltoid and spring ligament.

BACKGROUND: Adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD) is caused by impaired medial ligamentous structures and posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction (PTTD). Although degeneration and trauma could separately cause AAFD, how these factors interact in the pathomechanism of AAFD is unclear. The joint capsule in the medial ankle is considered an important structure, providing passive stability by limiting joint movement. Previous reports on the joint capsule suggest its involvement in pathological changes of the ankle, but because of the high priority placed on the ligaments, few reports address the
