Filling the form: Expressive Therapies Continuum-guided treatment of narcissistic personality disorder.

Sara was a 65-year-old Caucasian woman who requested art therapy after the death of her partner. She had experienced incest by her father and verbal abuse by her mother until she left home at 21. Her life was characterized by broken relationships due to alienating anger outbursts and an interrupted work history; she met three criteria for narcissistic personality disorder. Sara initially was socially isolated and intellectualizing. She desired recognition but was fearful of exposure. The Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) theoretical framework, which consisted of a gradual progression from c

Perception of juvenile delinquents of group therapy approaches.

The present study focuses on juvenile delinquents' perception of two procedures used in group therapy. Eleven juvenile delinquents, participants of a probation program, were asked to share their experience with group therapy. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of the interviews with the participants, the specifics of verbal and action procedures were examined. Verbal procedures offer clients a greater opportunity for emotional experience and subsequent cognitive processing of the experience leading to personal growth. The action procedures are, in contrast, a way of deepening the c

Preventing intimate partner violence via the Internet: A randomized controlled trial of emotion-regulation and conflict-management training for individuals with aggression problems.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to investigate the effect of an Internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (iCBT), which incorporated emotion-regulation and conflict-resolution techniques, on intimate partner violence (IPV). Another aim was to test the theoretical underpinnings of the treatment model using mediation analysis. METHOD: Sixty-five participants with aggression problems in intimate adult relationships were recruited from the community and were randomly assigned to iCBT or to a monitored waitlist control. Participants were assessed with standardized s

From Doubt to Development: Professional Journeys of Novice CBT Therapists.

Novice therapists often experience a complex interplay of self-doubt, emotional strain, and professional uncertainty as they transition from training to independent clinical practice. This study explored the lived experiences of novice cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) therapists, focusing on the challenges of early practice and the strategies employed to support regulation and growth. Seven early-career CBT therapists participated in semi-structured interviews, and data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Two overarching themes were identified: professional id

Preliminary Outcomes of a Culturally Adapted Fear of Recurrence Therapy (FORT) for Turkish Breast Cancer Survivors: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a major psychological burden for breast cancer survivors, impairing daily functioning and quality of life. Fear of Recurrence Therapy (FORT), a cognitive-behavioral group intervention, has shown efficacy in Western settings. This study evaluated the effectiveness of an adapted FORT program in Turkish breast cancer survivors. METHODS: A single-blind, parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted between February and March 2025. Stage I-III survivors within 5 years post-treatment (N = 100) were randomized (1:1) to FORT or a CBT-based int

Gender-specific effectiveness of dialectic-behavioral therapy for patients with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (DBT-PTSD) - results of an observational single center study.

Background: Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) was recently included in the ICD-11, extending the PTSD symptom profile to encompass disturbances in self-organization (DSO). Trauma-focused Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT-PTSD) is an effective psychotherapeutic treatment, particularly among women. However, empirical data on DBT-PTSD's gender-specific effectiveness in naturalistic settings remains limited. Objective: The present study examined whether DBT-PTSD is similarly effective in reducing symptoms of cPTSD among women, men, and gender minority (GM) individuals under routine cli

Mapping family involvement in music therapy for children and adolescents with cancer: a scoping review.

Children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment, along with their families, experience psychological and emotional distress. Music therapy is increasingly acknowledged as an intervention that may foster emotion regulation, coping, and communication; however, family involvement remains insufficiently delineated. This scoping review maps evidence on family involvement in music therapy for paediatric oncology, characterises the forms and intensity of participation, summarises intervention features and reported outcomes, and identifies limitations and research gaps. Following PRISMA-ScR guide

[Emotional hyper-reactivity and sleep disturbances in remitted patients with bipolar disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Emotional reactivity and sleep constitute key dimensions of bipolar disorder. Emotional reactivity referred to emotion response intensity and emotion response threshold. Higher emotion reactivity is described during both mood episodes and periods of remission in bipolar disorder. As well, sleep disturbances are described during both acute episodes and euthymic periods in bipolar disorder. Links between sleep and emotion regulation start to be studied in general population. Interactions between sleep and emotion systems can rely on shared neuronal structures, which involve limbic

Utilizing Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in Schools: Staff Trainings to Help Students Manage Emotions and Build Resiliency.

BACKGROUND: Schools are well positioned to address the growing youth mental health crisis by addressing students' social and emotional well-being through regular, consistent and caring connections. However, teachers often report a lack of information on how to address student mental health in the classroom. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) focuses on helping individuals understand and manage intense emotions. "Utilizing DBT Skills in Schools" (UDSS) is a virtual training program supporting the integration of DBT into daily classroom activities. CONTRIBUTIONS TO PRACTICE: The UDSS curricul

The Challenge of Fibromyalgia Efficacy of Hypnosis in Alleviating the Invisible Pain: A Narrative Review.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a multifaceted and incapacitating functional pain syndrome characterized by continuous, severe, widespread musculoskeletal pain. FMS is associated with other symptoms such as fatigue, nonrestorative sleep, cognitive/emotional dysfunction, and diminished health-related quality of life. The pathogenesis of FMS is still not fully understood, but an increasing amount of evidence supports the link between childhood/adulthood emotional, physical, sexual abuse or neglect and the development of FMS. Managing and treating FMS patients can be challenging because the syndro

Efficacy of the unified protocol for transdiagnostic treatment of comorbid emotional disorders in patients with ultra high risk for psychosis: Results of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The most common reason for help-seeking in ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis patients is comorbid symptoms, mainly anxiety and depression. However, psychological interventions are mainly focused on subthreshold psychotic symptoms. There is a growing push to include transdiagnostic therapies in specialized intervention teams for psychosis in young people. The Unified Protocol for the Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP) has demonstrated efficacy in emotional disorders, and its application has recently expanded to other pathologies such as borderline personality di

Emotion-focused perspective on generalized anxiety disorder: A qualitative analysis of clients' in-session presentations.

OBJECTIVE: The classification of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is influenced by the tradition of conceptualizing disorders in the context of their clinical presentation and subsequent professional thinking around them. Our qualitative, descriptive-interpretative study uses a theoretical framework drawn from emotion-focused therapy (EFT) as the basis of our interpretation of GAD clients' presentation of their difficulties. METHOD: The current research consists of an investigation into the GAD presentation based on a multiple case study observational qualitative design. In total, 93 video/…

A randomized controlled trial of the effects of dog-assisted versus robot dog-assisted therapy for children with autism or Down syndrome.

Research with controlled or crossover designs in animal-assisted therapy have largely used control groups receiving no treatment or treatment as usual, which can potentially inflate the effects of these interventions. It is therefore not always clear whether this type of therapy has a positive effect on, for example, the social skills of children with special support needs. To address this, the current study compared children (7-16 years, n =  65) with autism or Down syndrome who received five sessions of dog-assisted therapy (n =  24; 9 female) with an active control group who received five s

Shedding: An updated guide to a common cause of hair loss.

Telogen effluvium is a common, nonscarring type of diffuse hair shedding that results from a temporary disruption of the normal hair growth cycle and is typically reversible, with gradual regrowth over time. It can be triggered by physiologic or emotional stressors such as illness, surgery, childbirth, nutritional deficiencies, medications, or systemic infection, though a cause cannot always be found. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, and management focuses on identifying potential triggers, educating and reassuring the patient, and offering supportive therapies when appropriate.

Childhood maltreatment and response to cognitive behavioral therapy among individuals with social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: The association between childhood maltreatment-particularly emotional maltreatment-and social anxiety disorder (SAD) has been established by research. Only recently have researchers begun to look at the impact of childhood maltreatment on treatment outcomes, and findings have been mixed. Because prior studies have focused on pharmacotherapy outcomes, or used global measures of childhood adversity or abuse, it is not clear how specific types of maltreatment impact outcomes in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for SAD. The current study reports on how specific types of childhood mal
