[The EEG rhythms and psychological indices of emotions in reactive depression].

Power and topographic distribution of the EEG rhythms (delta, theta 1, theta 2, alpha, beta 1, and beta 2) were compared with the reactive and personal anxiety levels (by Spilberger) and parameters of subjective emotional semantic space (obtained by the method of subjective scaling). A general decrease in the EEG power was observed in reactive depression, with the exception of the theta-rhythm, the power of which was higher than that in healthy persons. The increase in the theta 2 power in depression was correlated with activation of the right frontal area ("the zone of negative emotions"), an…

Emotion socialization as a dynamic process across emotion contexts.

Emotion-related socialization behaviors that occur during parent-child interactions are dynamic. According to Eisenberg, Cumberland, and Spinrad's (1998) model, ongoing parental reactions to emotions and discussions of emotion indirectly shape children's socioemotional competence throughout childhood and adolescence. Typically developing adolescents-girls especially-are at increased risk for developing internalizing symptoms. We examined if and how emotion dynamics of mother-daughter interactions contribute to adolescent girls' internalizing symptoms. We applied grid-sequence analysis (Brinber…

Exploring emotion regulation and emotion recognition in people with presymptomatic Huntington's disease: The role of emotional awareness.

Interest in the role of both emotion regulation and recognition in our understanding of mental health has been steadily increasing, especial … e early cognitive manifestations of HD. In this study, we hypothesised that the ability to regulate emotions can be impaired in people with presymptomatic HD, and that such impairment may be associated with a deficit of emotion recognition. To test this, an online survey was carried out with 117 English and Italian-speaking people with presymptomatic HD, c …

Positive emotion in daily life: Emotion regulation and depression.

Depression is associated with the infrequent use of emotion regulation strategies that increase positive emotion and the frequent use of strategies that decrease positive emotion. However, prior research mostly relies on global, retrospective assessments that fail to capture dynamic relations between positive emotion and emotion regulation in ecologically valid settings. This study used an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) design to test whether depression is related to positive emotion regulation in daily life. We recruited 108 individuals to complete a 14-day EMA study, tracking strategy

A qualitative analysis of emotion and emotion regulation in hoarding disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The role of emotion regulation (ER) has been receiving increased attention in relation to various forms of psychopathology including hoarding disorder (HD). However, questionnaire designs are limited to finding associations of ER with symptoms or symptom groups, without finding out how such constructs might be involved in the disorder. METHODS: This study was a qualitative investigation of ER in a clinical HD sample (N = 11). RESULTS: Prominent themes provided support for ER difficulties in hoarding. In particular, difficulties with identifying and describing feelings, unhelpful a

Emotional reactivity and emotion recognition in frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is associated with a profound decline in social and emotional behavior; however, curren … in frontotemporal lobar degeneration patients may result more from an inability to process certain emotions in other people than from deficits in emotional reactivity.

Maternal expressed emotion in conduct and emotional disorders of childhood.

Maternal expressed emotion (EE) scales were rated for children aged 6-11 with conduct disorders, emotional disorders and a group of non-referred children matched for sex and age (N = 30 in each of the three groups). Maternal warmth distinguished significantly between the three groups (CD < ED < Controls), while criticism distinguished the group of conduct disordered children. Maternal criticism was positively associated with child behaviour ratings even within the non-referred group. These observational ratings of warmth and criticism were found to be much more strongly associated with child b

The effects of mother's physical and emotional unavailability on emotion regulation.

In summary, emotion dysregulation can develop from brief or more prolonged separations from the mother as well as from the more disturbing effects of her emotional unavailability, such as occurs when she is depressed. Harmonious interaction with the mother or the primary caregiver (attunement) of the mother's physical unavailability were seen in studies of separations from the mother due to her hospitalization or to her conference trips. These separations affected the infants' play behaviors and sleep patterns. Comparisons between hospitalizations and conference trips, however, suggested that

Is there a dissociation between emotional feelings and emotional signs in autism?

There is evidence that autistic persons are deficient both in the expression and recognition of emotion. Emotions are viewed here as in part genetically determined, inborn behaviours with great importance for social regulations. Both in phylogenetic and in ontogenetic development there is a transgression from emotion-bound or signal-reflex-like behaviour chains towards an experience-based coupling of emotional signals with events lying outside emotional exchanges. We conjecture that in childhood autism there is a deficit in linking biologically based emotional signals to emotional experiences …

Emotional maltreatment.

Child abuse is a problem that affects the lives of many American children. The public is often bombarded with information regarding horrific cases of physical and sexual abuse. Emotional maltreatment, however, has been slow to achieve recognition as a serious social problem for a variety of reasons. Compared with physical or sexual abuse, emotional maltreatment is more difficult to identify and define, and good epidemiological data are not available. An erroneous perception also exists that the sequelae of emotional maltreatment are less severe than that of physical and/or sexual abuse. Prompt

[Emotional tears].

Emotional tears, an exclusively human means of communication, are complex and rarely the subject of scientific research. The same nerves, receptors, and transmitters seem to be involved in their production as those used for basal and reflex tears. However, stimuli must be received in a cognitive/social context, detected by "induction centers" in the telencephalon, and forwarded to effector centers. Increased concentrations of protein, prolactin, manganese, potassium, and serotonin have been detected in emotional tears. Various theories try to explain the reason for and benefit of emotional tea

[Voice and emotion].

Voice and emotion are partly linked. The voice reacts to and translates emotion, but can also be seen as an instrument to release emotion. Emotion is a source of wealth for the voice, bringing it to life, giving it meaning and content. The voice, by serving emotion, enriches and enhances it.

The neuropsychophysiology of emotion.

The principles of hierarchical organization and progressive increase of differentiation and integration within a hierarchy provide a framework for understanding how the subjective experience of emotion, brain mechanisms mediating emotion and autonomic activation during emotional arousal are organized, and how the three domains are interrelated. Supporting evidence from empirical studies of three types, pairing one domain with each of the other two, are reviewed. This integrated model may bring coherence to the study of emotion, and facilitate an improved understanding of the role of emotion in

Verbal humour preventively regulates negative emotions in trait anxiety individuals: ERP evidence.

This study investigated whether verbal humour could preventively regulate negative emotions in high trait anxiety (HTA) and low trait anxiety (LTA) individuals, exploring underlying cognitive neural mechanisms using ERPs and ERO. In a two-factor mixed design, humorous stimuli elicited more positive emotions than neutral condition, with greater emotional improvement in the LTA group. Humour also modulated subsequent negative-stimulus processing: LTA individuals showed reduced P2 amplitude in the humorous condition, indicating decreased early attention to negative stimuli, whereas both groups sh…

Bodily Maps of Emotions in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: The experience of emotions is accompanied by distinct bodily sensations, consistent across cultures. Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by altered interoceptive and affective processing, suggesting that individuals with IBS may experience emotions differently in their bodies. This study investigated whether so-called bodily maps of emotions differ between individuals with IBS and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Forty-three individuals with IBS (Rome IV) and 54 HC used the topographical mapping tool EmBODY to color bodily silhouettes marking where sensations were perceived…

Coping Strategies Before Competition: The Role of Stress, Cognitive Appraisal, and Emotions.

Sports, and especially competitions, can be a stressful experience for athletes, who often struggle to find and apply strategies to cope with stress. Thus, this study analyzes how different coping strategies anticipated to be employed in an important competition are explained by psychological (i.e., cognitive appraisal and emotions) and person and sports-related factors (i.e., gender, type of sport). Specifically, athletes were asked to complete a protocol 24-48 h prior to an important competition to assess their adaptation to stress related to high performance. The study included 383 athletes…

Gaming onset and engagement among university students: a question of mismanaged emotions?

BACKGROUND: Gaming and associated psychological concerns have become increasingly prevalent among young adults in Latin America. However, little is known about the psychosocial factors that distinguish current, former, and non-gamers in this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey design was used with a convenience sample of 1,318 university students in Mexico (Mage = 19.90, SD = 1.67; 46.5% female). Participants completed measures of prosocial behavior, emotional intelligence, perceived social support, and mental health. One-way ANOVAs and MANOVAs were conducted to examine group differ

The course of women's emotions from early pregnancy to the postpartum period.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on emotions in the perinatal period have focused on psychopathology, identifying groups of women with distinct symptom trajectories, but research on typical, normative changes in emotions across the perinatal period is scarce. This study examines typical patterns of emotions in low-risk, healthy perinatal population. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study with 151 participants who completed emotion-related questionnaires (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, Perceived Stress Scale, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) six times dur…

Influence of emotions on clinical performance in acute care: A scoping review.

Acute care is a high stake, emotionally charged environment. Although emotions are increasingly recognized as integral to various aspects of healthcare, research examining how they influence and interact with clinical performance in acute care settings remains relatively limited. This scoping review aims to summarize relevant empirical research on the influence of emotions on clinical performance in acute care settings. The following databases were searched by a health sciences librarian: Medline and Medline in Process, Embase Classic and Embase, Cochrane's CENTRAL, APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, and E…
