Nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates, such as alendronate, have been widely used to treat osteoporosis because they may target multiple signals in the mevalonate cascade. The present study evaluated the therapeutic effects of alendronate on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), which is a prototypical autoimmune disease model. EAE was induced in C57BL/6 mice by immunization with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)35-55 peptide. The mice were checked daily for clinical symptoms, such as paralysis, and the levels of inflammatory cytokines were analyzed using ELISA, western blot a…

Mumps is an acute communicable self-limiting swelling of the parotid or other salivary glands. Various organs can be involved including the testes, central nervous system, mammary glands, ovary, pancreas, kidneys, and heart. We hereby present a rare case of an 18-year-old unvaccinated male with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis following mumps without parotitis.

Avian encephalomyelitis (AE) was diagnosed in three flocks of leghorn layer pullets following AE vaccination. Ages of the birds were 11, 12, and 14 wk. The submissions came from three different companies located in two geographic areas of the Central Valley of California. The clinical signs included birds down on their legs, unilateral recumbency or sitting on their hocks, lethargy, reluctance to move, dehydration, unevenness in size, low weight, tremors of the head in a few birds, and mildly to moderately elevated mortality. The flocks had been vaccinated against fowl pox and AE with a combin…

Angiogenesis, the formation of new vessels, is found in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) demyelinating lesions following Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) release and the production of several other angiogenic molecules. The increased energy demand of inflammatory cuffs and damaged neural cells explains the strong angiogenic response in plaques and surrounding white matter. An angiogenic response has also been documented in an experimental model of MS, experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), where blood-brain barrier disruption and vascular remodelling appeared in a pre-symptomatic disea…

We report a 30-year-old man with recurrent eosinophilic encephalomyelitis. He had a history of childhood asthma and allergic rhinitis. A half year before admission, when he suffered from a headache, a few lesions were indicated by brain MRI at another hospital. From a month before admission, he noticed gait disturbance, sensory impairment, difficulty in micturition, and constipation. Neurological examination revealed moderate muscle weakness in the feet, hypoesthesia below Th6, and bladder-bowel disturbance including impotence. Lumbar T(2) weigthed MRI showed a severe swelling and a hyperinten…

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a monophasic, immune-mediated demyelinating disorder that can follow immunizations or more often infections including rubeola, rubella, varicella, herpes zoster, mumps, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, or, more commonly, other nonspecific upper respiratory tract infections. Documentation of a preceding illness is not required to make this diagnosis. This report examines the case of a 9-month-old male patient presenting with the features of an acute leukodystrophy following innoculation with the mixed vaccine Pentaxim (Sanofi Pasteur, Lyon- France) while suf…

Enterovirus type 71 (EV71) is a causative agent of large outbreaks of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in Europe (Bulgaria, 1975; Hungary, 1978) and South-East Asia (Malaysia, 1977; Taiwan, 1998; Singapore, 2000-2007; People's Republic of China, 2007-2009). HFMD afflicted children less than 10 years of age and resulted in recovery within 3-7 days. In a small percentage of infants (aged 6 months to 3 years), HFMD was accompanied by acute neurological complications, such as serous meningitis, poliomyelitis-like syndrome (extremity pareses and muscle paralyses); brain stem encephalitis (myocl

The aim of this study was to establish an animal model of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) and examine the basic pathological changes, as well as expression and distribution of MMP-2 and MMP-9, in Wistar rats. Tissue sections were processed for HE staining, Weil myelin staining, and modified Bielschowsky staining. Expression and distribution of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) were detected with immunohistochemistry. We divided the EAE into five types, depending on pathological characteristics and cli…

We report the case of a female Japanese infant who was diagnosed with incontinentia pigmenti (IP) on the basis of the clinical and pathological findings of characteristic skin lesions and the detection of deletion in the nuclear factor-kappa B essential modulator gene at Xq28. The patient developed repetitive seizures at the age of 7 months when she was diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that often occurs after vaccination or infection. The causative infectious agent in this patient seemed to be Mycopl…

We report a 37-year-old woman with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) who presented with progressive vertigo. A central nervous system disorder was initially suspected because gaze-evoked torsional nystagmus was observed and electrical nystagmography (ENG) revealed abnormal eye movements with saccadic ocular pursuit and pathological optokinetic nystagmus. Finally ADEM was diagnosed by the clinical symptoms and the characteristic patterns of brain MRI. It is rare for otolaryngologists to examine patients with ADEM. ADEM takes an acute course and can present a grave state and therefore …

The pathological and immunohistochemical findings of avian encephalomyelitis (AE) were described in various tissues of naturally infected pigeons of a flock from a outbreak in Turkey. Clinically, paresis, paralysis, circling movement and torticollis of the head associated with nervous signs were marked symptoms among the diseased pigeons. At necropsy, small or large white-greyish foci were detected in the pancreas, and erosive-ulcerative foci along with petechial hemorrhages in ingluves. Histopathologically, lesions in central nervous system, particularly in the cerebellum molecular layer, con…

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis is considered a monophasic, inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system. A temporal relationship usually exists between the onset of neurologic symptoms and an infection or a vaccination. A viral exanthem facilitates the diagnosis. Some heterogeneity exists with regard to etiology and clinical course of this disease. Immunosuppression is considered the treatment of choice.

Two children with a recent history of viral illness developed visual loss secondary to optic neuritis. Clinical findings and neuroimaging were consistent with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). Markedly elevated opening pressures were noted on lumbar puncture. The patients demonstrated an initial favorable response to high-dose corticosteroid administration. Both had recurrence of symptoms after being tapered off oral corticosteroids. High-dose corticosteroids were reinstituted and a bilateral optic nerve sheath decompression was performed on one patient who developed profound visual…

Evolution of viruses in the eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) complex was studied by analyzing RNA sequences and oligonucleotide fingerprints from isolates representing the North and South American antigenic varieties. By using homologous sequences of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus as an outgroup, phylogenetic trees revealed three main EEE virus monophyletic groups. A North American variety group included all isolates from North America and the Caribbean. One South American variety group included isolates from the Amazon basin in Brazil and Peru, while the other included strain…

We report here for the first time the occurrence of apoptosis of cells in the spinal cord in experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), an autoimmune, T-cell-mediated demyelinating disease. Four different forms of EAE were studied in the Lewis rat: (i) acute EAE induced by inoculation with whole spinal cord and adjuvants; (ii) acute EAE induced by inoculation with myelin basic protein (MBP) and adjuvants; (iii) acute EAE induced by the passive transfer of MBP-sensitized spleen cells; (iv) chronic relapsing EAE induced by inoculation with whole spinal cord and adjuvants followed by treatmen…
