Endocrine Mucin Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma Treated With Mohs Micrographic Surgery: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine Mucin Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a low-grade, cutaneous adnexal neoplasm. It is believed to have a potential for local recurrence as well as distant metastases in rare cases. OBJECTIVE: This study's purpose is to compare recurrence rates and outcomes between EMPSGC undergoing Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) and traditional surgical excision. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature was performed using the following keywords: "Endocrine Mucin Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma" and/or "EMPSGC" and/or "Mohs Micrographic Surgery" and/or "MMS" and/or

Environmentally relevant dose of the endocrine disruptor tributyltin disturbs redox balance in female thyroid gland.

Tributyltin (TBT) is an endocrine disruptor used as a biocide in nautical paints. Even though many TBT effects in marine species are known, data in mammals are scarce, especially regarding the thyroid gland. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of a subchronic exposure to TBT on thyroid oxidative stress of female Wistar rats. Rats received vehicle (control group), 200 or 1000 ng TBT/kg body weight/day for 40 days. After euthanasia, one part of the thyroids were collected in order to assess iodide uptake; activity and/or mRNA expression of thyroperoxidase (TPO) and dual oxidases (DUOX

Simultaneous presentation of orbital mantle cell lymphoma and endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma.

Mantle cell lymphoma is a rare malignancy to present in the orbit, comprising only 1-5% adnexal lymphomas. Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is an equally uncommon adnexal tumor of sweat gland origin that may present on the eyelid. Herein we present a case of a 77-year old man with no previous cancer history who presented with painless progressive left globe proptosis and an enlarging left upper lid margin lesion, ultimately determined upon biopsy to be simultaneous orbital mantle cell lymphoma with systemic involvement and isolated eyelid EMPSGC. The pathogenesis, clini

Endocrine Mucin-Producing Sweat Gland Carcinoma: Two New Eyelid Cases and Review of the Literature.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare low-grade sweat gland carcinoma. It is clinically often mistaken for basal cell carcinoma and presents a low rate of local recurrence. In this article, we present 2 new cases of EMPSGC arising in a similar location (left lower eyelid) and review the literature on this topic. One patient is a 72-year-old male with complete excision and no evidence of recurrence after 17 months of surveillance. The second patient is a 77-year-old female with incomplete initial excision and local recurrence after 38 months. p63 immunostain was neg

Multicentric endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma and mucinous carcinoma of the skin: A case report.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare low-grade sweat gland carcinoma. EMPSGC is thought to be a precursor to mucinous carcinoma of the skin (MCS). Since the first description of EMPSGC in 1997, only a few cases have been reported, and its etiology and mechanisms remain unknown. In this report, we describe a 71-year-old Japanese woman with two isolated EMPSGC and one MCS lesion on her face. She was simultaneously diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. She had a history of uterine cancer of unknown histopathological diagnosis 24 years previously. Th

Sporadic multiple parathyroid gland disease--a consensus report of the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons (ESES).

BACKGROUND: Sporadic multiglandular disease (MGD) has been reported in literature in 8-33 % of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). This paper aimed to review controversies in the pathogenesis and management of sporadic MGD. METHODS: A literature search and review was made to evaluate the level of evidence concerning diagnosis and management of sporadic MGD according to criteria proposed by Sackett, with recommendation grading by Heinrich et al. and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. Results were discussed at the 6th Workshop of the

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma occurring on extra-facial site: a case report.

Cutaneous endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a very rare low-grade malignant neoplasm analogous to the mammary solid-papillary carcinoma. It frequently expresses neuroendocrine markers and may show mucinous differentiation. Although the nodules are circumscribed, myoepithelial cells cannot be showed in most cases and about half of the cases are associated with invasive mucinous carcinoma. Hence, it has been suggested to be invasive and the precursor lesion of some primary cutaneous mucinous carcinomas. After being recognized as a distinct entity, all cases reported to

Preliminary evaluation of endocrine cells in the rat respiratory tract after thyroid and parathyroid gland removal.

The complete thyroid and parathyroid gland removal leads to the abrupt reduction of calcitonin, which can be a factor stimulating growth and intensified activity of APUD system cells in the respiratory tract. Thus, neuroendocrine cells in the lungs and trachea in rats after thyroid and parathyroid removal were evaluated. Paraffin specimens of the examined organs were stained with H+E and impregnated with silver. Calcitonin, synaptophysin, somatostatin, and neuronal-specific enolase were detected immunohistochemically by the use of rabbit specific antibodies. Antibodies used in the study immuno

Pineal gland of a nocturnal bird, Indian spotted owlet, Athene brama: morphological and endocrine observations.

It has been reported that owls (Strigiformes) do not have a pineal gland. However, our light microscopy study revealed an intermediate form of tubulofollicular and solid-type large pineal gland in a tropical owlet, Athene brama. The epithelial cells forming follicles (6-8) in the distal region and the solid cluster of parenchymal cells of different diameters in the proximal region anteriorly tapered with a long cylindrical stalk and continued into commissural organs and choroid plexus. The intrapineal localization of perivascular nerve fibers and blood vessels clearly explained the sympathetic

Morphological lesions of the pancreatic ducts. Significance of pyloric gland metaplasia in carcinogenesis of exocrine and endocrine pancreas.

Morphological lesions of the pancreatic ducts were studied in 113 control autopsy cases, and 84 cases of primary pancreatic carcinoma. The lesions were classified into pyloric gland metaplasia, focal pseudo-proliferation, goblet cell metaplasia, squamous metaplasia, and atypical proliferation. Diabetes mellitus or glycosuria, alcohol intake, and smoking do not seem to have any close associations with these lesions or pancreatic carcinoma. Pyloric-gland and squamous metaplasias were found at nearly comparable incidences both in control and carcinoma cases, but marked atypical proliferations, wh

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 or 4: detection of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands with 18F-fluorocholine PET/CT. Illustrative cases and pitfalls.

18F-fluorocholine (FCH) PET/CT is now well established to detect the hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands (HFPTG) in a case of sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT), but only limited evidence is available about the utility of FCH PET/CT to detect the HFPTG in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type 1 or 4. The pHPT in this context frequently consists in a multiglandular disease with small hyperplastic glands rather than adenomas, which is challenging for imaging modalities. The data of patients with MEN1 or MEN4 after parathyroidectomy referred to FCH PET/CT for presurgical

Endocrine effect of ghrelin on histological, hormonal and morphometric parameters of the pituitary gland and the possibility of its clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Ghrelin, a brain-intestinal hormone, is a growth hormone (GH) secretagogue. Because it regulates appetite and is secreted most prominently before meals, it is often described as a "hunger hormone". It consists of 28 amino acids. Given the connection between nutritional status and energy metabolism, it suggests that disorders in these areas can lead to anorexia, especially during aging. This review article aims to demonstrate ghrelin's influence on the histological, hormonal, and stereological characteristics of pituitary cells, as well as its potential clinical applications. METHO

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of eyelid as a presenting feature of breast carcinoma in a male patient.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare indolent tumor with predilection for periocular skin of elderly women. Although recurrences may occur, metastases are uncommon with EMPSGC. We present a case of EMPSGC of the eyelid as a presenting feature of invasive carcinoma of the breast in a male patient. A 71-year-old male presented with a right eyelid mass from the past 6 months. A wide excision biopsy with intraoperative frozen section margin control and reconstruction was done. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were suggestive of EMPSGC. On systemic examina

Pesticide chlorpyrifos acts as an endocrine disruptor in adult rats causing changes in mammary gland and hormonal balance.

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are compounds that interfere with hormone regulation and influence mammary carcinogenesis. We have previously demonstrated that the pesticide chlorpyrifos (CPF) acts as an ED in vitro, since it induces human breast cancer cells proliferation through estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) pathway. In this work, we studied the effects of CPF at environmental doses (0.01 and 1mg/kg/day) on mammary gland, steroid hormone receptors expression and serum steroid hormone levels. It was carried out using female Sprague-Dawley 40-days-old rats exposed to the pesticide during 100 days.
