An Epidemiological Analysis of Summer Influenza Epidemics in Okinawa.

Objective This study evaluates the difference between winter influenza and summer influenza in Okinawa. Methods From January 2007 to June 20 … netic diversity of influenza A. Additionally, influenza B viruses play a significant role in summer epidemics, almost every year. To further understand influenza epidemics during the summer in Okinawa, we evaluated the full genome sequences of some representative human influenza A and influenza B viruses isolated in Okinawa. Phylogenetic data analysis also …

Modernising epidemic science: enabling patient-centred research during epidemics.

BACKGROUND: Emerging and epidemic infectious disease outbreaks are a significant public health problem and global health security threat. As an outbreak begins, epidemiological investigations and traditional public health responses are generally mounted very quickly. However, patient-centred research is usually not prioritised when planning and enacting the response. Instead, the clinical research response occurs subsequent to and separate from the public health response, and is inadequate for evidence-based decision-making at the bedside or in the offices of public health policymakers. Understanding the origin of seasonal epidemics of mycoplasmal conjunctivitis.

1. Many host-pathogen systems show regular seasonal oscillations. 2. Seasonal variation in mycoplasmal conjunctivitis prevalence in house finches is an example of such oscillations. 3. An annual pulse of Mycoplasma gallisepticum-naïve juveniles increasing the number of susceptibles, seasonal changes in flocking behaviour increasing transmission rate and a gradual loss of resistance to reinfection with time are sufficient to model the observed seasonal variation in disease prevalence. Nevertheless, experiments are needed to test the underlying mechanisms. 4. We carried out an 18-month experimen

Reflections on crisis burials related to past plague epidemics.

Drawing its etymology from the Latin pestis (curse), plague, over the centuries, has been more dreaded by humankind than any other epidemic. The Apocalypse had recognized plague as the archetypal divine curse, 'the power to kill over a fourth of the earth'. Plague is thus a particular topic of study, insofar that it is one of the rare epidemics that has had recurrent major consequences on demography and human societies. Its highly transmissible nature, the brutality of its action, its high pathogenicity, marked by strong lethality and great swiftness, and the complete absence of treatment opti…

[Cholera epidemics on Reunion Island during the 19th century].

The first cholera outbreak on Bourbon Island (now Reunion Island) was recorded in January 1820. The disease was imported from Mauritius Island aboard the steamer Pivert. The epidemic began on Mauritius in November 1819 after the English frigate, La Topaze, called from Calcutta, India. Dr. François Vinson demonstrated the transmissibility of cholera during this epidemic. Drastic sanitary measures spared Reunion from the two epidemics on Mauritius Island, in 1854 and 1856. The second outbreak of cholera on Reunion Island was recorded on March 6, 1859. The disease was introduced from East Africa …

The role of immunity and seasonality in cholera epidemics.

This paper presents a mathematical model for cholera epidemics which comprises seasonality, loss of host immunity, and control mechanisms acting to reduce cholera transmission. A collection of data related to cholera disease allows us to show that outbreaks in endemic areas are subject to a resonant behavior, since the intrinsic oscillation period of the disease (∼1 year) is synchronized with the annual contact rate variation. Moreover, we argue that the short period of the host immunity may be associated to secondary peaks of incidence observed in some regions (a bimodal pattern). Finally, we…

[Epidemics of gastroenteritis caused by norovirus in Parisian children].

During the months of October and November 2006-2008, norovirus was detected in the stools of 14 children hospitalized with acute diarrhea (no sapovirus). Nine of these noroviruses belonged to a unique GGII4 strain, which produced severe clinical symptoms, present only in 2007 and 2008 and absent in 2006. This strain, identified in Europe mainly in the elderly, seems to be on the rise in children in the Paris area over the past few years.

Type 2 diabetes is a major public health concern with high morbidity, mortality, and health-care costs. Recent reports have indicated that t … ining the link between OSA and alterations in glucose metabolism. The interactions among the rising epidemics of obesity, OSA, and type 2 diabetes are likely to be complex and involve multiple pathways. A better understanding of the relationship between OSA and type 2 diabetes may have important public health implications.

Psychological trauma and its treatment in the polio epidemics.

In this paper, I explore the kinds of psychological trauma experienced by polio patients in the mid-twentieth century in the United States. I argue that the trauma was the result of the experience of sudden paralysis, the conditions under which patients were treated, and the expectations for rehabilitation derived from the psychosocial context of the period. Psychiatric and psychological counseling in hospitals was only beginning to be offered in this period, and most polio patients received little or no counseling or assistance in dealing with their psychological problems. Contemporary psycho

New and re-emerging infectious diseases: epidemics in waiting.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: New and emerging diseases, combined with the rapid spread of pathogens resistant to antibiotics and of disease-carrying insects resistant to insecticides, are daunting challenges to human health. RECENT FINDINGS: The new diseases of recent months are West Nile virus conquering the American continent, the introduction of monkeypox in the USA, the emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome worldwide, and avian influenza which crossed the species barrier again to claim several victims. SUMMARY: Emerging infectious diseases are almost instantaneously a global concern b

Large epidemics of hemorrhagic fevers in Mexico 1545-1815.

In 1545, twenty-four years after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire, an epidemic of a malignant form of a hemorrhagic fever appeared i … still unknown. In this report we describe, and now that more information is available, analyze four epidemics that occurred in Mexico during the colonial period with a focus on the epidemic of 1576 which killed 45% of the entire population of Mexico. It is important to retrieve such diseases and the epidemics they caused from their purely historical context …

[Immigration and epidemics in the State of São Paulo].

The article discusses sanitation issues as aspects of the process of foreign immigration into São Paulo state during the first decade after the Proclamation of the Republic. The text also shows the relationships between this wave of immigration and the structuring of state sanitation services and the devising of the techno assistance model adodpted by these services as of the 1890's. At a time when yellow fever was the most common and lethal of the epidemics plaguing that state--killing mainly foreigners--one of the lodestars of public health actions was the defense of this inflow of immigrant…

Epidemics of Q fever in Poland in 1992-1994.

From 1992 till the end of 1994, three epidemics of Q fever among people have been recognised in Poland. In 1992 the outbreak of Q fever was detected at the farm near Jawor in Legnica district. Coxiella burnetii infection was recognized serologically in 25 persons (27 tested). Titres of serum antibodies ranged from 8 to 256. It has been found that cattle were the source of human infection. C. burnetii strain has been isolated from the bull semen. In the same year, Q fever was recognized among 18 workers of the tannery in Myślenice, in Kraków district. Antibodies to C. burnetii, in titres from 8…

[Familial epidemics of tick-borne encephalitis in central Povazie].

The authors describe two cases of tick-born encephalitis family epidemies in the natural focus of tick-born encephalitis (TbE) in the central part of Povazie in the district of Povazká Bystrica in the years 1989 and 1993. The infection took place due to consumption of raw goat milk. The best prevention against tick-born encephalitis is represented by vaccination. (Tab. 4, Ref. 6.)

Pattern of epidemics of donovanosis in the "nonendemic" region.

Of the 432 genital ulcer cases seen in 1985, 36 had donovanosis, thus forming an incidence of 8.33%. In contrast, 42 (6.38%) cases of donovanosis were diagnosed among a total of 658 cases of genital ulcers in 1983. The majority of patients in both epidemics were young unmarried men who contracted the disease through extramarital sexual intercourse. Perianal lesions were seen primarily in those who had a history of sodomy. The disease chiefly affected illiterate persons of low socioeconomic strata. The incubation period varied from 1 to 90 days. Twenty (62.50%) patients in the 1985 epidemic had…

[Epidemics of Staphylococcus aureus in a neonatal care unit].

The work describes an epidemic infection by Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus in a N.I.C.U. which took place during the first six months of 1986. Hospital systemic infection supported by M.R.S.A. are frequently noticed in N.I.C.U. This is related, on the one side with a selection of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains inside the hospital premises and, on the other side with increased survival of high infectious risk neonates who are subjected to invasive medical manoeuvres. The cases reported include 7 neonates (5 of which were preterms) who were affected by a severe sepsis. From an epidemiol
