Epidemiology, risk factors, and prevention of animal bites injuries in Slovakia: an 18-year epidemiological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Animal bite injuries, predominantly from dogs, rank among the top 15 causes of nonfatal injuries globally. Since 2006, negligible number of cases of rabies were declared in Slovakia, lacks comprehensive national data on bite demographics and outcomes. METHODS: This Epidemiological study analysed 14,978 patient records (2006-2023) obtained from Slovak public health databases. Statistical analyses, including chi-square tests and linear regression, were used to evaluate trends in bite incidence, vaccination coverage, and associated risk factors. RESULTS: Between 2006 and 2023, 14,97

Epidemiology of Peripheral Artery Disease, Risk Factors, and Trends.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects more than 230 million people worldwide, with a disproportionate burden in low- and middle-income countries. PAD is more common in the elderly population; prevalence increases significantly from about 10% in individuals aged 55 to 59 years to 60% among people aged ≥ 85 years. Racial and ethnic disparities are evident in PAD, as Black individuals have nearly double the prevalence of PAD compared with non-Hispanic White individuals. Chronic limb-threatening ischemia, the most advanced clinical manifestation of PAD that affects approximately 1.3% of adults a

Anal Dysplasia: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Progression to Malignancy.

This review aims to address the framework for classification of anal dysplasia, immunogenic and behavioral risk factors for development of disease, the progression to anal cancer, and key intervention points to guide contemporary practice. Although anal cancer is rare, its rising incidence and disproportionate impact on racial minorities, immunocompromised individuals, and older adults require attention to combat high disease burden within these communities. Concentrated efforts with targeted resource allocation are required to address this rising disease incidence, following new screening gui

Lung cancer in young individuals; risk factors and epidemiology.

Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, with an estimated 2.5 million new patients and 1.8 million deaths in 2022. While lung cancer predominantly affects older individuals, there is growing concern about the impact of lung cancer on younger generations, specifically adolescents and young adults (AYA) patients aged 15-39 years. Lung cancer in young individuals has several unique characteristics, such as sex preference, histological subtype, and frequency of somatic mutations in EGFR, ALK, and ROS1. In this article, we describe the risk factors for young patients

Asthma: epidemiology, risk factors, and opportunities for prevention and treatment.

Asthma is characterised by variable airflow obstruction and is associated with symptoms of cough, wheeze, and dyspnoea, and with airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness. There are approximately 300 million people with asthma worldwide. Despite a current plateau, the burden of this disease is likely to increase due to population growth, urbanisation, and ageing. Disease onset is associated with low birthweight, preterm birth, viral infections, in-utero passive smoke exposure, urbanisation, and occupational exposures. Obesity is associated with increased incidence and severity of asthma, whe

Epidemiology of Leishmaniasis: Risk factors for its pathology and infection.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. About 20 species of Leishmania are pathogenic to humans, with the specific infecting species playing a crucial role in determining clinical outcomes. There are three main forms of disease: cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. In addition to the infecting species, it has recently been suggested that parasite strains and genetic factors affect disease manifestation and response to treatment. This suggests that infecting parasites are a crucial risk factor for the pathology of leis

Epidemiology and Risk Factors for Development of Sporadic Vestibular Schwannoma.

Vestibular schwannomas (VSs) are benign, slow-growing tumors of the eighth cranial nerve. Sporadic unilateral VSs constitute approximately 95% of all newly diagnosed tumors. There is little known about risk factors for developing sporadic unilateral VS. Potential risk factors that have been reported are familial or genetic risk, noise exposure, cell phone use, and ionizing radiation, whereas protective factors may include smoking and aspirin use. More research is needed to elucidate the risk factors for development of these rare tumors.

Suicide in Northern Ireland: epidemiology, risk factors, and prevention.

The rates of suicide and self-harm in Northern Ireland are high, and have increased from 143 registered suicides in 1996 to 313 in 2010 and 318 in 2015. This Review summarises the epidemiology of suicidal behaviour, as well as the evidence from a small number of studies that have identified risk factors associated with high suicide rates in Northern Ireland. These risk factors were mental illness, trauma, exposure to the conflict known as the Troubles, deprivation, relationship problems, employment difficulties, financial difficulties, being LGBT, childhood adversities, and alcohol or drug use

Field cancerization: Definition, epidemiology, risk factors, and outcomes.

Field cancerization was first described in 1953 when pathologic atypia was identified in clinically normal tissue surrounding oropharyngeal carcinomas. The discovery of mutated fields surrounding primary tumors raised the question of whether the development of subsequent tumors within the field represented recurrences or additional primary tumors. Since this initial study, field cancerization has been applied to numerous other epithelial tissues, including the skin. Cutaneous field cancerization occurs in areas exposed to chronic ultraviolet radiation, which leads to clonal proliferations of p

Effect of iatrogenic factors on periodontal health: An epidemiological study.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease. Among conglomerate etiological factors, overhanging interproximal restorations are viewed as contributing factors causing gingival inflammation due to their retentive capacity for bacterial plaque leading to periodontal destruction. Hence this study is intended to determine the prevalence of overhanging restorations and its effect on periodontal status of the teeth and to assess the iatrogenic effects of overhanging margins on periodontal health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 subjects of 15-65 years of age were recruited for thi

Albinism: epidemiology, genetics, cutaneous characterization, psychosocial factors.

Oculocutaneous albinism is an autosomal recessive disease caused by the complete absence or decrease of melanin biosynthesis in melanocytes. Due to the reduction or absence of melanin, albinos are highly susceptible to the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation and are at increased risk of actinic damage and skin cancer. In Brazil, as in other parts of the world, albinism remains a little known disorder, both in relation to epidemiological data and to phenotypic and genotypic variation. In several regions of the country, individuals with albinism have no access to resources or specialized me

Penile cancer epidemiology and risk factors: a contemporary review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Our objective is to present an overview of epidemiologic, clinical, and molecular risk factors with a focus on contemporary literature. RECENT FINDINGS: Penile cancer is a rare and aggressive neoplasm that accounts for less than 1% of male malignancies in the United States. Geographical disparities in incidence of disease are evident with high rates concentrated in the developing world (2.8-6.8 per 100 000) where neonatal circumcision is low and socioeconomic conditions predispose patients to multiple risk factors. Western countries have a significantly lower incidence and

Malignancy and rheumatoid arthritis: Epidemiology, risk factors and management.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory condition that can result in pain and functional disability. It is also associated with an increased occurrence of comorbidities, including an increased risk of certain cancers such as lung cancer and lymphoma. The aetiopathogenesis of this increased cancer risk is likely multifactorial and includes shared risk factors as well as chronic inflammation. There is also a concern that the treatment for RA itself may increase this risk further, particularly treatment with biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). This paper aims to

Update on the epidemiology, risk factors, and outcomes of systemic vasculitides.

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) and giant cell arteritis (GCA) are the most common primary systemic vasculitides of the adult population, while polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a clinical syndrome often associated with GCA. Incidence and prevalence rates of AAV have been increasing in the last decades, whereas those of GCA and PMR have remained stable. The mutual interplay between environmental and genetic risk factors leading to the development of these diseases has been further analyzed in the last years. The role of infectious agents has repeatedly been

Epidemiology, environmental risk factors and genetics of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a frequent neurodegenerative disease with a premotor phase that lasts several years. Risk factors that have been linked to PD are tobacco, caffeine, black tea, pesticides and calcium channel blockers. Some risk factors may be due to inverse causality (e.g. changes in personality during the premotor phase). The genetics of PD are complex with a contribution of Mendelian (e.g. SNCA, LRRK2, Parkin, Pink1,…) and non-Mendelian factors (e.g. single nucleotide polymorphisms). Glucocerebrosidase gene mutations (Gaucher disease) are currently the strongest genetic risk facto
