Modeling infodemics on a global scale: A 30 countries study using epidemiological and social listening data.

Infodemics represent a significant threat to public health, arising from complex interactions between online and offline phenomena. The continuous feedback loops between digital information ecosystems and real-world contingencies make infodemics particularly challenging to define operationally, measure, and eventually model in quantitative terms. This study aims to evaluate the effect of various epidemic-related variables on the dynamics of the COVID-19 infodemic, using a regression modeling framework applied to data from 30 countries across diverse income groups. We use World Health Organizat

An Immuno-Epidemiological Model of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in the African Buffalo Population with Carrier Transmission.

In this paper, we present a novel immuno-epidemiological model, linking host-pathogen interactions at within-host and population scales for foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) in its natural host, African buffalo. Endemic persistence of FMD in buffalo populations is facilitated by chronic infections in carrier hosts: Upon exposure to the virus, buffalo become acutely infected, followed by either viral clearance and recovery with immunity, or persistent infection for several months. In our model, we divide the infectious population based upon these two stages, acute and carrier infection, so th

The effect of tranexamic acid during childbirth on maternal mortality: an epidemiological modelling and cost-effectiveness study.

BACKGROUND: Tranexamic acid reduces life-threatening bleeding after childbirth. We aimed to identify the settings where tranexamic acid cost-effectively reduces maternal deaths from bleeding. METHODS: We used WHO mortality data and effect estimates from our individual patient data meta-analysis to develop an epidemiological and cost-effectiveness model to calculate the absolute benefit (postpartum haemorrhage deaths averted) and potential harm (deaths from inadvertent intrathecal tranexamic acid injection) in each country, if all women received 1 g intravenous tranexamic acid when giving birt

Osteomyelitis related lameness across animal species: pathophysiology, etiology, epidemiology and experimental model approaches.

Osteomyelitis is an inflammatory disorder resulting from the invasion of opportunistic pathogens into bones and bone marrows, causing necrosis and affecting multiple animal groups. It represents one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal diseases, imposing substantial economic losses and raising significant animal welfare concerns across livestock and poultry industries. The pathophysiology of osteomyelitis is characterized by mechanisms of disease development, clinical age, the specific anatomic site in the bone, and structural differences between adults and juveniles. The inability of animals

Understanding the direct and indirect impacts of disease response phenotypes on chicken coccidiosis epidemiology: A modelling approach.

Coccidiosis, a widespread disease in poultry caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria, leads to significant economic losses. The increasing resistance of Eimeria species to anti-parasitics, combined with the high cost of vaccines, underscores the need for alternative intervention strategies against coccidiosis. This article explores the relative impact of several traits on the health of the group, accounting for the population dynamics of the infection. We focus on five traits that can potentially be influenced by genetic selection, treatment, vaccination or nutrition: (1) susceptibi

Significance of the ARIMA epidemiological modeling to predict the rate of HIV and AIDS in the Kumba Health District of Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: AIDS is a severe medical condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that primarily attacks the immune system, specifically CD4+ T lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell crucial for immune response), monocyte macrophages, and dendritic cells. This disease has significant health and socio-economic implications and is one of the primary causes of illness and death globally (UNAIDS, 2022). It presents significant challenges for public health and population well-being, both in developed and developing countries. By conducting a time series analysis, this research seeks

Multiscale geographically weighted modeling of tuberculosis incidence in China: integrating geographic perspectives into epidemiological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health problem, and the pathogenesis of TB is determined by multiple variables. The complicated relationship between geographic determinants and incidence rates is poorly understood, and multicollinearity and spatial heterogeneity were not considered when exploring this relationship. METHODS: In this study, the factors influencing the incidence of TB in China were investigated, considering spatial heterogeneity, to develop a multidimensional TB indicator system that incorporates geographic factors. A comprehensive linear-nonlinear two-stage feat

Health workforce needs in Malawi: analysis of the Thanzi La Onse integrated epidemiological model of care.

BACKGROUND: To make the best use of health resources, it is crucial to understand the healthcare needs of a population-including how needs will evolve and respond to changing epidemiological context and patient behaviour-and how this compares to the capabilities to deliver healthcare with the existing workforce. Existing approaches to planning either rely on using observed healthcare demand from a fixed historical period or using models to estimate healthcare needs within a narrow domain (e.g., a specific disease area or health programme). A new data-grounded modelling method is proposed by wh

The epidemiologic and economic impact of varicella and herpes zoster vaccination in South Korea: A mathematical modelling study.

BACKGROUND: In South Korea, the National Immunization Program has included one-dose varicella vaccination for 1-year-olds since 2005. This study examines the potential impact of introducing a two-dose varicella vaccination for children, along with zoster vaccination for adults, using either the zoster vaccine live (ZVL) or recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV). METHODS: The investigation considered four strategies in a base case scenario. The first involved introducing zoster vaccination for 60-year-olds, with a 60 % coverage. The second strategy combined zoster vaccination with a second-dose vari

Will More of the Same Achieve Malaria Elimination? Results from an Integrated Macroeconomic Epidemiological Demographic Model.

Historic levels of funding have reduced the global burden of malaria in recent years. Questions remain, however, as to whether scaling up interventions, in parallel with economic growth, has made malaria elimination more likely today than previously. The consequences of "trying but failing" to eliminate malaria are also uncertain. Reduced malaria exposure decreases the acquisition of semi-immunity during childhood, a necessary phase of the immunological transition that occurs on the pathway to malaria elimination. During this transitional period, the risk of malaria resurgence increases as pro

Ventricular Arrhythmias in First Acute Myocardial Infarction: Epidemiology, Mechanisms, and Interventions in Large Animal Models.

Ventricular arrhythmia and subsequent sudden cardiac death (SCD) due to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the most frequent causes of death in humans. Lethal ventricular arrhythmias like ventricular fibrillation (VF) prior to hospitalization have been reported to occur in more than 10% of all AMI cases and survival in these patients is poor. Identification of risk factors and mechanisms for VF following AMI as well as implementing new risk stratification models and therapeutic approaches is therefore an important step to reduce mortality in people with high cardiovascular risk. Sample size calculation for estimating key epidemiological parameters using serological data and mathematical modelling.

BACKGROUND: Our work was motivated by the need to, given serum availability and/or financial resources, decide on which samples to test in a serum bank for different pathogens. Simulation-based sample size calculations were performed to determine the age-based sampling structures and optimal allocation of a given number of samples for testing across various age groups best suited to estimate key epidemiological parameters (e.g., seroprevalence or force of infection) with acceptable precision levels in a cross-sectional seroprevalence survey. METHODS: Statistical and mathematical models and th
