OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the apoptosis of epididymal epithelium and the change of epididymal carnitine following testicular torsion/detorsion in rats.
METHODS: Twenty-four healthy adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: Group A (2-hr torsion), Group B (5-hr torsion) and a control group (0-hr torsion). BACKGROUND: A retrospective review was carried out to evaluate the clinical presentation of children with epididymal cysts (EC) and outcome of management at our institution.
METHODS: There were 49 patients with EC in this series. The diagnosis of EC was made by physical examination and confirmed by ultrasound (US).

A 30-year-old male, who underwent orchiopexy of left undescending testis in his childhood, presented with right hemiscrotal swelling without pain. Ultrasonography revealed a paratesticular tumor which showed enhancement on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Diffusion-weighted MRI showed decreased diffusion in the tumor, and malignant tumor could not be ruled out. High inguinal orchiectomy was carried out and pathological diagnosis was benign leiomyoma of the epididymis.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory disease that characteristically involves the lungs and lymph nodes. Involvement of the genitourinary system is rare. We report the case of a 39-year-old African American man who presented with an asymptomatic right-sided epididymal mass and underwent partial epididymectomy. Pathologic analysis revealed numerous noncaseating granulomas. Results from computed tomography imaging of the chest and lung biopsy were consistent with sarcoidosis.

A rare case of epididymal sarcoidosis is reported. A 52-year-old man was admitted with a painless mass in the left scrotum. An operation revealed that a 1-cm mass was located at the epididymal head and well demarcated from the testis and the surrounding tissue. Epididymectomy was performed. Histopathological diagnosis was noncaseating granulomas consistent with sarcoidosis. Systemic examination showed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy and bilateral peripheral anterior synechiae, but these lesions were diagnosed as inactive. Serum level of angiotensin-converting enzyme was normal.

It is accepted that a range of epididymal anomalies exists in boys with cryptorchidism, varying from ductal patency aberrations to abnormal attachments of the epididymis to the testes or even complete absence. A prospective study was carried out on the efficacy of sclerotherapy for the treatment of hydrocoeles and epididymal cysts. Thirty-six hydrocoeles and 13 epididymal cysts were treated and followed up for between 1 and 2 years. Thirty-four hydrocoeles were cured, 1 failed to respond to treatment and 1 recurred after treatment. All 13 epididymal cysts were cured.
