Valgus slipped capital femoral epiphysis: a systematic review.

Valgus slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a rare entity which leads to a proximolateral displacement of the hip epiphysis. The literature on valgus SCFE consists of case reports or case series. Since no evidence synthesis has been conducted, a systematic review on all published cases of valgus SCFE was conducted. The search strategy located 27 studies comprising 74 subjects with 96 hips. Demographic results were as follows: female/male ratio was of 1.65, and the mean age at presentation was 13.0 ± 2.54 years. Bilateral cases were recorded in 31.1%. Hip pain was the most frequent sympt

Modified Oxford Bone Scores Are Reduced in Patients With Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis Compared With Healthy Controls.

BACKGROUND: The etiology and pathogenesis of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) are attributable to abnormalities of the proximal femoral epiphysis. This study aimed to examine if there is a difference in the bone age of patients diagnosed with SCFE compared with patients without hip pathology. METHODS: We identified a consecutive series of patients treated for SCFE between December 2012 and December 2019 from a departmental database. Retrospective chart review was performed to collect demographic information and patient medical history. We then obtained a control group of statistically

Controversies in the Management of Unstable Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) involves anterior-superior displacement of the proximal metaphysis relative to the epiphysis of the proximal femur. It is the most common hip disorder affecting the pediatric population. SCFE has a higher incidence in adolescent males in addition to racial and regional predilections. Despite being described over 500 years ago, there remains controversy surrounding the topic. This article examines current concepts in SCFE, with a spotlight on treatment. An evidence-based discussion of treatment controversies regarding reduction method, fixation construct

Evidence based treatment for unstable slipped upper femoral epiphysis: Systematic review and exploratory patient level analysis.

The management of slipped upper femoral epiphysis is controversial and evolving as insight into the condition develops. Loder introduced the concept of slip stability and demonstrated a strong association between poor outcome and instability. Almost half of patients with unstable slip developed femoral head osteonecrosis. This has been influential in surgeons' choice of treatments. Some surgeons have adopted a minimal intervention approach such as pinning in situ or gentle reduction and pinning whereas others advocated an urgent open reduction and stabilisation of slip using various surgical t

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis and hypothyroidism in a young adult: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis is the most common hip disorder affecting the adolescent population, usually individuals between 8 and 15 years old. However, there are few case reports of older patients in the literature to date. It is believed that the etiology is multifactorial and may include obesity, trauma and, less frequently, endocrine pathologies comprising hypothyroidism, hypogonadism and panhypopituitarism. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 28-year-old Latino woman diagnosed with hypothyroidism secondary to arachnoidocele associated with skeletal immaturity

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

Although slipped capital femoral epiphysis is the most common disorder of the hip in adolescents, the diagnosis is often delayed. The subsequent development of degenerative joint disease is related to the severity of the slip, which in turn is usually related to the duration of the symptoms. This article summarizes the aetiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation and treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

Problems and complications of slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

In summary, epiphysiodesis, by either "pinning" or "pegging," seems to be necessary to further prevent displacement of the SCFE. To minimize complications, aggressive closed reduction, open reduction, pin penetration, and unnecessary drill holes should be avoided. Avascular necrosis and chondrolysis, the most frequent and devastating complications, appear to be related to the severity of the slip and the type of treatment.

Displaced epiphyseal plate of the terminal phalanx in a child.

A case of mallet finger in a child is described. The epiphysis of the terminal phalanx was displaced dorsally with the extensor tendon attached to it, and was first diagnosed two weeks after injury. The treatment was by open reduction. Radiograph three years later showed that a satisfactory position of the epiphysis and normal growth of the terminal phalanx had occurred.

Origin of Cam Morphology in Femoroacetabular Impingement.

Cam morphology of the proximal femur is an abnormal contour of the femoral head-neck junction present in approximately 15% to 25% of the asymptomatic population, predominantly in males. Alpha angle and femoral head-neck offset ratio are 2 objective measurement tools that define cam morphology. Both primary (idiopathic) and secondary cam deformity develops through distinct mechanisms. The cause of primary (idiopathic) cam morphology remains incompletely understood. Mounting evidence suggests that idiopathic cam morphology develops during adolescence through alterations in the capital femoral ep
