An epidemic of 44 cases of milker's nodules was recorded in the Tampere Central Hospital catchment area in Finland during the autumn of 1974. Exanthema or erythema multiforme-like secondary eruptions were seen in 10 cases. One female patient is reported in detail because of the simultaneous occurrence of erythema nodosum and erythema multiforme. The virological diagnosis was confirmed by electron microscopy.

A 9-year-old girl presented with multiple, ring-shaped, erythematous, nonscaly plaques on the trunk, face and arms, most surrounding preexisting melanocytic nevi. She had experienced recurring episodes of herpes simplex labialis over several years (average 4/year), the last occurring 10 days prior.

Skin lesions of erythema multiforme show time-dependent changes from early papular erythema to the late target lesion which consists of a peripheral elevated erythematous area and a central depressed area.
