Outreach workers' experiences in a homeless outreach project: issues of boundaries, ethics and staff safety.

Mental health professionals and researchers have emphasized the importance of conducting outreach to locate homeless persons with mental illness, and of creatively engaging these persons into a therapeutic relationship. These outreach and engagement activities raise challenging issues in the areas of client-staff boundaries, professional ethics, and staff safety. While several issues in each of these three key areas have received attention in the growing literature on homelessness, certain issues within each area remain unexplored. The authors draw from the street experiences of outreach staff

Ethical considerations of phone-based interviews from three studies of COVID-19 impact in Bihar, India.

Phone-based interviews present a range of ethical challenges, including how to ensure informed consent and privacy and maintain confidentiality. Our paper presents conceptual and practical ethical considerations taken into account across three telephone studies on the impact of COVID-19 conducted following India's nationwide lockdown imposed in March 2020. Two studies captured COVID-19 response impact on primary-level Reproductive Maternal Neonatal and Child Health (RMNCH) services and on provider wellness, respectively. The third study focused on how the gendered experience of COVID-19 and th

Impact of fibrinogen-to-erythrocyte suspension ratio on mortality and functional outcomes in major perioperative bleeding (Approximate Dose-Equivalent of Fibrinogen-to-Erythrocyte Suspension (ADEFES) study): protocol for a prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Early and balanced replacement of blood products appears to be the key factor in improving outcomes of major bleeding patients including acute trauma, cardiac, obstetric and transplant surgery patients. Definitive clinical guidance regarding the optimal ratio of blood products, including those containing fibrinogen, is still lacking. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that increasing the fibrinogen content to erythrocyte suspension ratio improves the mortality and functional outcomes of patients undergoing surgeries with expected major bleeding. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The Approx

Climate seasonality and the health and well-being of older adults in rural Busia and Kilifi Counties, Kenya: SENIORS study - protocol for a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults are particularly vulnerable to climate-related stressors such as extreme heat, food and water insecurity and displacement, all of which can worsen existing health conditions. This is further compounded by age-related physiological changes, pre-existing health conditions and social factors like isolation and limited mobility. With a growing population of older adults in low-income and middle-income countries, their vulnerability to climate change becomes a critical global public health issue and yet is understudied and needs urgent and comprehensive action. This study

First-year physical function trajectories and adverse outcomes in incident peritoneal dialysis: a prospective cohort protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a key renal replacement therapy for end-stage kidney disease, yet early trajectories of physical function following PD initiation are heterogeneous and clinically consequential. The Peritoneal Dialysis-Physical Function (PD-PF) cohort study protocol aims to: (1) identify distinct 12‑month physical function trajectories after PD initiation; (2) develop prediction models using baseline and early follow-up data to classify patients into trajectory groups; and (3) examine associations of baseline physical function and trajectory membership with adverse cli

Ethical Orientation and Research Misconduct Among Business Researchers Under the Condition of Autonomy and Competition.

The topics of ethical conduct and governance in academic research in the business field have attracted scientific and public attention. The concern is that research misconduct in organizations such as business schools and universities might result in practitioners, policymakers, and researchers grounding their decisions on biased research results. This study addresses ethical research misconduct by investigating whether the ethical orientation of business researchers is related to the likelihood of research misconduct, such as selective reporting of research findings. We distinguish between de

Respiratory syncytial virus infection in COPD exacerbations: the RECODE study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often suffer episodes of exacerbation (ECOPD). Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an increasingly recognised cause of illness in adults. Yet the prevalence of RSV during ECOPD and its association with clinically relevant outcomes remain insufficiently defined. The RECODE study sought to determine the prevalence of RSV infection in patients with ECOPD and to assess the association between RSV and hospitalisation, length of stay, acute cardiovascular events and/or death. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Prospective, multicentre, ob

Ethical Uncertainties: Diverging and Emerging Regulations of Assisted Dying/Assisted Suicide and the Potential Role of Clinical Ethics.

Assisted Suicide (AS)/Assisted Dying (AD), where a physician prescribes lethal medication to a terminally ill patient who intends to take it to end his/her life, is a highly controversial matter. Sound knowledge about recent legal changes and related challenges should inform considerations for clinical ethics consultation, education, and policy making. This article describes a wide spectrum of current legal contexts for AS/AD in the United Kingdom, Italy, Austria, the United States (US), Switzerland, and Germany. This selection includes countries covering a wide range from the restrictive to t

Study protocol for a multicentre, prospective cohort study of the association of angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockers on outcomes of coronavirus infection.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 epidemic grows and there are clinical trials of antivirals. There is an opportunity to complement these trials with investigation of angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockers (ARBs) because an ARB (losartan) was effective in murine influenza pneumonia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Our innovative design includes: ARBs; alignment with the WHO Ordinal Scale (primary endpoint) to align with other COVID-19 trials; joint longitudinal analysis; and predictive biomarkers (angiotensins I, 1-7, II and ACE1 and ACE2). Our hypothesis is: ARBs decrease the need for hospitalisation, sever
