Accidental migration of a dental implant into the ethmoid sinus following a transalveolar sinus elevation procedure.

BACKGROUND: Migration of a dental implant into the paranasal sinuses may be the result of sinus membrane perforation, loss of osseointegration, and lack of initial stability. The majority of displaced implants migrate into the maxillary sinus, which may cause sinusitis. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to report an extremely rare ethmoid sinus migration of a dental implant after crestal approach in a resorbed posterior maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 60-year old Korean male with a noncontributory medical history was referred from a local clinic to remove the migrated dental implant in

The highest correlation was found in the anterior ethmoid bone area (r = 0.98), posterior ethmoid bone area (r = 0.53), maxillary sinus (r = 0.36) and sphenoid sinus (r = 0.35). There was only a low agreement in the case of frontal sinus and recessus frontalis. Possible factors such as time between CT and opera …

[Study of computed tomographic dacryocystography used in endoscopic intranasal dacryocystorhinostomy preoperatively].

OBJECTIVE: To study computed tomographic dacryocystography used in endoscopic intranasal dacryocystorhinostomy preoperatively. METHOD: Ten volunteers and twelve patients with dacryocystitis were undergone the coronary and axial computed tomographic dacryocystography. RESULT: According to the anatomic relationship between anterior ethmoid sinus and fossa of lacrimal sac, the cells of anterior ethmoid sinus were classified into three typies: the result was that type I accounted for 12 sides (27.3%), type II 18 sides (40.9%), type III 14 sides (31.8%) by analysing the data of axial dacryocystog

Modified approach for ethmoid and anterior skull base surgery.

The use of combined craniofacial resection is well established for tumors of the ethmoid bone and the anterior aspect of the base of the skull. Mobilization of the medial fronto-orbital ridge improves the transbasal approach and can be performed with a monobloc bone flap. We describe an en bloc bifrontal craniotomy including the supraorbital ridges and the nasal bones. This provides a wider angle of approach to the anterior aspect of the base of the skull than any other method and avoids retraction of the frontal lobes. This type of bone flap procedure can be performed after a wide periosteal …

Ossicula Bertini in human adults.

Remnants of ossicula Bertini in their embryological position, i.e., joined to the ethmoid, were found in three out of 20 adult individuals aged 17-23 years. The ossicles closed the inferior and/or a part of the anterior wall of the sphenoidal sinus, being joined to the wall of the sinus by sutures. The existence of these formations might be of importance in inflammation of the sphenoid sinus, or disease in or around the nasopharynx.

Blastomycosis of fronto-ethmoid complex.

Blastomycosis in children is relatively infrequent. Further, osteomyelitis of the frontal bone, which prior to the antibiotic era occurred more frequently and was mostly due to pyogenic cocci, is rare today. We described a case of frontal osteomyelitis in a child due to blastomycosis which occurred in the absence of frontal sinuses. To our knowledge this rare combination of factors has not previously been reported.

[Variability and age-related features of the anatomy of the midline structures of the anterior skull base].

The article presents the literature data on the structural variability and age-related features of the midline anatomical structures of the anterior skull base (frontal sinus, ethmoid bone, anterior parasellar region, and medial orbital wall). This is the area of surgical interests of neurosurgeons and rhinosurgeons. The study objective is to analyze the literature data on the individual variability and age-related anatomy of these structures. The work is illustrated with original images from the authors' personal archive. The individual anatomical features of eloquent structures in the surgic…

Bony tumour in an unusual location on the mandible.

Osteomas are benign osteogenic tumors that are seen in the facial bones, but uncommonly in the mandible. In the facial bones, both central and peripheral osteomas have been described. Peripheral osteomas have been described to occur in the frontal, ethmoid, and maxillary sinuses but are not common in jawbones. When in the mandible, they are usually found over the angle and inferior border of the mandible. We report on a solitary peripheral osteoma located unusually in the sigmoid notch of the left mandible causing facial asymmetry.

Ethmoid roof CSF-leak following frontal sinus balloon sinuplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Though clear indications for its clinical application are not established yet, balloon sinuplasty technology per se is considered safe and very few severe complications have been mentioned in literature as of today. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 36-year-old female patient who presented with right sided rhinorrhea from a CSF-leak in the ethmoidal roof after balloon sinuplasty, aimed at her right frontal sinus. Apparently, the surgeon was unaware of having penetrated the skull base through the lateral lamella of the cribriform plate intraoperatively. CSF rhinorrhea became e

[Orbital apex syndrome disclosing naso-oculo-cerebral zygomycosis].

In a 70-year-old male patient with untreated diabetes a febrile orbital apex syndrome of rapid onset revealed a rhino-orbito-cerebral zygomycosis. Biopsies of the ethmoidal mucosa showed numerous colonies of the Rhizopus genus. Despite medical treatment (amphotericin B) and surgery (ethmoidectomy), the patient died within one week. Rhino-cerebral zygomycosis is a rare disease which occurs in diabetic and immunocompromised patients.

Alternaria-Associated Fungus Ball of Orbit Nose and Paranasal Sinuses: Case Report of a Rare Clinical Entity.

Alternaria-associated fungus ball of maxillar, ethmoidal paranasal sinuses, nasal cavity and orbit with bone erosion is extremely rare. Till recently, only two cases of this infection in immune competitive patients have been reported. We are herein describing the case of immune-competent woman who suffered of nasal congestion for 10 years. Patient was treated for tumor-like lesion in right maxillar sinus, where propagation in right nose cavity, right ethmoidal cells and right orbita was present. The organism that was seen in surgical removal of fungal debris by histological study, in using myc

Ossifying fibroma of the head and neck: involvement of the temporal bone- and unusual and challenging site.

Ossifying fibroma of the head and neck is most commonly described in the mandible and maxilla. A few isolated reports in the literature exhibit the rare existence of this lesion in the nasal bones, orbit, ethmoid sinus, sphenoid sinus, occiput, and in only two well-documented cases, the temporal bone. We present the case of an extensive ossifying fibroma of the temporal bone that presented as a suspected case of hyperostosis of the external auditory canal and conductive hearing loss, without any cosmetic deformity. A review of the recent literature concerning the sites, radiologic presentation

A Stepwise Progression of Acute Bilateral Visual Loss Due to Onodi Cell Sinusitis.

Acute visual loss in an immunocompromised patient may be caused by acute invasive fungal sinusitis (AIFS), even if symptoms include only mild headache and computed tomography (CT) shows only mild sinusitis, especially of the Onodi cell. Herein, we report a case of a 71-year-old man with a medical history of dermatomyositis and type 2 diabetes mellitus who presented with a stepwise progression of acute bilateral visual loss, mild headache, and altered consciousness. Initially, as the plain cranial CT showed only mild fluid retention in the posterior ethmoid sinus without bone destruction, the s

[Secondary reconstruction of post-fracture deformities in the nasal-orbital ethmoid region].

OBJECTIVE: To study the surgical reconstruction of secondary fracture deformities of the nasal-orbital ethmoid area. METHODS: Typical bicoronal and subciliary incisions or the adjacent scar incision were employed to expose the fractured area. The flattened nasal bone was narrowed by curved osteotomy along the medial orbital rims and trimed with a bur. 2-3 pieces of cranial outer table were used to reconstruct the nasal framework, which were fixed to the frontal bone with mini-plates. After the medial orbital wall and orbital floor were exposed, the herniated orbital contents were released and
