Disease-dependent mechanisms of albuminuria.

Body temperature drops dramatically during hibernation, but the heart retains the ability to contract and is resistant to induction of arrhythmia. Although adaptive changes in the heart prior to hibernation may be involved in the cold-resistant property, it remains unclear whether these changes are sufficient for maintaining cardiac pulsatility under an extreme hypothermic condition. We forcibly induced hypothermia in Syrian hamsters by pentobarbital anesthesia combined with cooling of the animals. This allows reproduction of a hypothermic condition in the absence of possible hibernation-speci

Synergistic effects of daytime, nighttime, and compound extreme temperature events and ambient air pollution on cardiovascular mortality.

Extreme temperature events (ETEs) and air pollution are established cardiovascular mortality risks, yet their synergistic effects under diurnal-specific joint exposure remain understudied. We aimed to examine whether joint exposure to diurnal-specific ETEs and air pollution exert a synergistic effect on cardiovascular mortality. This time-stratified case-crossover study included 148,081 cardiovascular deaths in Bozhou, China, from 2013 to 2023. Daytime, nighttime, and compound heatwave and cold spell exposures were assigned based on residential addresses. Air pollutant concentrations (PM2.5, P

Climate network reveals cross-seasonal teleconnections between heatwaves and cold waves.

Climate change is reshaping the global pattern of extremes, driving more frequent heatwaves, synchronous events, and compound hazards. This complexity renders the analysis and prediction of extreme events-such as heatwaves and cold waves-no longer confined to regional or weather-scale processes, as their interactions may trigger cascading and multiscale impacts. Using a complex network framework applied to global reanalysis data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (1981-2020), we identify robust cross-seasonal teleconnections

Cold haemagglutinin disease misdiagnosed as hand-arm vibration syndrome.

A patient with a diagnosis of hand-arm vibration syndrome was referred for a second opinion. He worked as a multi-skilled operative in the housing department of a local authority, a job not normally associated with high levels of exposure to hand-transmitted vibration ( > 2.5 m/s(2) A(8)). He described blanching of his fingers and a blue discolouration of his extremities in cold weather. On examination, his fingertips, toes and pinnae were acrocyanotic, the fingers were patchily pale and sensation was subjectively impaired in all of the digits. Investigations revealed a haemolytic anaemia and

Dry gangrene of the extremities in calves associated with Salmonella dublin infection; a possible immune-mediated reaction.

Dry gangrene of the extremities in calves is a circulatory error that may occur after infection with Salmonella dublin. This report describes an examination of three affected, 12 in-contact and five control calves, a main objective being to investigate the possible role of cold agglutination in pathogenesis. The lesions included dry gangrene of the hind legs, ears and tail. A cold agglutination test gave positive results in all animals examined except the controls. The three affected calves had high titres of S. dublin antibodies, as also did four of the in-contact animals. The results suggest

Effects of cromolyn sodium on the response to respiratory heat loss in normal subjects.

To investigate whether premedication with cromolyn sodium blunts the bronchoconstrictor response that occurs in normal subjects after extreme degrees of airway cooling, we had 9 adult male inhale either cromolyn or placebo on separate days, in a random, double-blind fashion, before challenges with cold air. The latter consisted of eucapnic hyperventilation to levels in excess of 85% of the indirect maximal breathing capacity while the subjects breathed air at -13 degrees C. Partial and maximal expiratory flow-volume curves were measured before and after medication and after hyperventilation. N

Stay Away From the Cold: An Unusual Case of Cold Agglutinin Disease Presenting as Recurrent Transient Ischemic Attacks.

Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a rare autoimmune hemolytic anemia caused by cold-reactive IgM antibodies leading to complement-mediated hemolysis. While CAD-associated venous thromboembolism is recognized, its role in arterial thromboembolic events, particularly ischemic stroke, is poorly defined. We report an 84-year-old woman who developed acute onset upper left extremity weakness following exposure to sub-zero temperatures. She had a history of similar transient episodes during cold seasons and recurrent anemia. Physical examination revealed decreased muscle strength in the upper left ext

Improving thermal shock resistance of segmented thermoelectric devices via metal foam integration.

Thermal shock failure restricts the long-term reliable operation of high-performance segmented thermoelectric devices in extreme environments such as space exploration. Taking the skutterudite-Bi2Te3 segmented thermoelectric leg as an example, here we show that thermal shock failure originates from thermal stress concentration caused by the thermal expansion mismatch between the solder and thermoelectric materials. To address this, we design a Ni foam composite solder layer, the network of which constrains the solder matrix, reducing its effective thermal expansion, while absorbing strain ener

Deep-sea megafauna co-opts microbial energy metabolism genes to withstand ultra-long starvation.

The deep-sea supergiant isopod is renowned for surviving over 5 years without food, which is a crucial adaptive trait for megafauna inhabiting extreme environments. Here, morphological, physiological, and genomic comparisons of deep-sea isopods reveal a dual adaptive strategy underlying this trait: a distended, food-retentive stomach that enables episodic hyperphagia and a markedly reduced basal metabolic rate (BMR). Notably, central to this adaptation is the ancient horizontal acquisition of the microbial energy metabolism-related gene ND1, which thereafter achieved significant dosage enhance

Decoding the cold: integrated secretome profiling reveals extracellular adaptation mechanisms in Glaciozyma antarctica.

Glaciozyma antarctica is an Antarctic psychrophilic yeast providing an excellent eukaryotic model for dissecting molecular mechanisms of cold adaptation. Yet, its extracellular protein repertoire, the interface between the cell and extreme surroundings, remains unexplored. Here, we present the first integrated bioinformatics-proteomics secretome map of G. antarctica, linking computational prediction with experimental validation under varying temperature stress, yielding 9 high-confidence experimentally supported secreted proteins. Three complementary pipelines (Phobius, SignalP/TMHMM, and WoLF

Application of the thermal death time model in predicting thermal damage accumulation in plants.

The thermal death time (TDT) model suggests that the duration for which an organism can tolerate thermal stress decreases exponentially as the intensity of the temperature becomes more extreme. This model has been used to predict damage accumulation in ectothermic animals and plants under fluctuating thermal conditions. However, the critical assumption of the TDT model, which is additive damage accumulation, remains unverified for plants. We assessed thermal damage in Thymus vulgaris under different heat and cold treatments, and used TDT models to predict time to thermal failure of PSII. Addit

Chronic myeloid leukaemia with extreme thrombocytosis.

We report two cases of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) with extreme thrombocytosis. The first patient was a 65-year-old man who presented with prolonged history of upper abdominal discomfort, anorexia and two episodes of recent gum bleeds without fever or other bleeding manifestations. He was a chronic smoker with no other comorbidities. Examination revealed moderate hepatosplenomegaly. On investigation, he was found to have extreme thrombocytosis (3,500,000/mm(3)) and leucocytosis with moderate anaemia. In view of the leucocytosis, he was investigated for CML and found to be positive for BCR-

Analysis of tourniquet pressure over military winter clothing and a short review of combat casualty care in cold weather warfare.

Cold weather warfare is of increasing importance. Haemorrhage is the most common preventable cause of death in military conflicts. We analysed the pressure of the Combat Application Tourniquet® Generation 7 (CAT), the SAM® Extremity Tourniquet (SAMXT) and the SOF® Tactical Tourniquet Wide Generation 4 (SOFTT) over different military cold weather clothing setups with a leg tourniquet trainer. We conducted a selective PubMed search and supplemented this with own experiences in cold weather medicine. The CAT and the SAMXT both reached the cut off value of 180mmHg in almost all applications. The S

Human vulnerability and variability in the cold: Establishing individual risks for cold weather injuries.

Human tolerance to cold environments is extremely limited and responses between individuals is highly variable. Such physiological and morphological predispositions place them at high risk of developing cold weather injuries [CWI; including hypothermia and/or non-freezing (NFCI) and freezing cold injuries (FCI)]. The present manuscript highlights current knowledge on the vulnerability and variability of human cold responses and associated risks of developing CWI. This review 1) defines and categorizes cold stress and CWI, 2) presents cold defense mechanisms including biological adaptations, ac

Effect of cold application and tizanidine on clonus: clinical and electrophysiological assessment.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Clonus is an involuntary rhythmic muscle contraction after sudden muscle stretch that occurs as a result of a lesion in the upper motor neurons. The real mechanism behind clonus remains obscure. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of central-acting tizanidine treatment and peripheral extremity cooling on clonus. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-eight patients with upper motor neuron involvement and sustained clonus. METHODS: The 38 patients were divided into 3 groups: cold group (n=19), tizanidine group (n=13), and patient control group (n=6). A separate gro

Efficacy of keishibukuryogan, a traditional Japanese herbal medicine, in treating cold sensation and numbness after stroke: clinical improvement and skin temperature normalization in 22 stroke patients.

Cold sensation and numbness have been reported as post-stroke sensory sequelae attributable to distal axonopathy, which is caused by chronic ischemia of diseased limbs resulting from dysfunction of vasomotor regulatory systems. Keishibukuryogan is a traditional herbal medicine used to treat symptoms of peripheral ischemia such as cold extremities. This study investigated clinical improvement and skin temperature in peripheral ischemia patients to determine the efficacy of keishibukuryogan in alleviating post-stroke cold sensation and numbness. Twenty-two stroke patients with cold sensation and

Cold urticaria and virus infections: a clinical and serological study in 39 patients.

Thirty-nine patients with cold urticaria seen over a 12-year-period were re-examined. All but 12 still had positive skin tests for cold and only five of these had shown a spontaneous cure. Fourteen patients were prone to collapse on cold exposure. The incidence of atopy in this group was comparable to that in control groups. Cold urticaria is an extremely chronic disease. The mean disease duration was 9.3 years. Serum antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus, measles virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), Chlamydia psittaci and Mycoplasma pneumoniae wer
