PURPOSE: To describe the demographics and clinical characteristics of work-related open-globe injuries (OGIs) at a level I trauma center over a 10-year period.
METHODS: Retrospective series.
RESULTS: A total of 183 eyes with work-related OGIs were identified. The majority of injuries occurred in men (96.7%). The anatomic site of the wound was zone 1 in 107 eyes (72.3%). The most common cause was nail gun use (47.0%). The types of OGI included 32 ruptures (17.5%), 112 penetrating injuries (61.2%), 38 intraocular foreign bodies (IOFB) (20.8%), and 1 mixed rupture/IOFB injury (0.5%). Presenting

PURPOSE: To evaluate the utility of ultrasound examination in detection of extraocular extension of uveal melanoma.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 170 enucleated eyes with ciliary body or/and choroidal melanoma and deep intrascleral tumor invasion with extrascleral extension.
RESULTS: The extrascleral extension was detectable before enucleation in 31 eyes (18.24%), and tumor sizes varied from 1.5 to 15 mm. Over the years 1977-1987 142 patients with malignant melanoma of the uvea were admitted to the Department of Ophthalmology, Teaching Hospital, Comenius University in Bratislava. Of the 119 patients treated by enucleation of the bulb 74.8% were alive after a mean follow up period of 5.9 years, whereas 25.2% of these patients died of consequences of metastases of the melanoma of the eye. In Norway, sightsaving therapy in retinoblastoma has only been given to least affected eyes in bilaterally affected children. PURPOSE: To demonstrate the ability of multiphoton microscopy to obtain full three-dimensional high-resolution images of the intact mouse eye anterior chamber without need for enucleation.
METHODS: A custom multiphoton microscope was constructed and optimized for deep tissue imaging. Simultaneous two-photon autofluorescence (2PAF) and second harmonic generation (SHG) imaging were performed. INTRODUCTION: Self-inflicted enucleation, also known as auto-enucleation (AE) or Oedipism, is an uncommon and severe form of ocular injury which presents as an ophthalmic and psychiatric emergency. Usually known to occur with untreated psychosis, this case is a rare report which demonstrates AE as a result of a subsequently diagnosed drug induced psychosis.
