BACKGROUND: We present the surgical methods and results of operations in cases with advanced carcinoma of the eyelids over a 5-year period.
METHODS: The study included 71 patients with advanced mono- and multifocal carcinoma (n=76) of the eyelids, selected from 324 consecutive cases with tumors of the eyelids. Various reconstruction techniques were performed after frozen section control.

We investigated the efficacy of an eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) in reducing the pain of a botulinum toxin injection into eyelids. 17 patients with facial dyskinesia (9 blepharospasm and 8 hemifacial spasm) who had been treated regularly with botulinum toxin injections received EMLA cream and placebo. The pain was assessed by the ophthalmologist and the patient. We describe a patient who had bilateral, yellow papules of the upper eyelids. This proved to be the clinical manifestation of an atypical lymphoid hyperplasia of the orbits. We describe this clinical presentation as a new sign of this condition. This finding serves to broaden the differential diagnosis of yellow papules on the eyelids. A 17-year-old woman with a left congenital ptosis and an alternating esotropia is presented. During horizontal gaze to the right and left, the eyelid of the abducting eye elevated and the eyelid of the adducting eye lowered. There were no synkinetic eyelid movements with contraction of the pterygoid, sternocleidomastoid, or facial muscles. Synkinetic eyelid movements due to aberrant regeneration were unlikely due to absence of previous third nerve palsy. A supranuclear innervational abnormality is proposed to explain the clinical findings.

Thelazia skrjabini and T gulosa were found in the eyes of 237 of 566 bovine heads (41.9 per cent) examined in a Surrey abattoir during 1976. The prevalence of infection increased during late June, July and August, when a new generation of worms emerged in eyes.
