NMR spectroscopy and chemical studies of an arabinan-rich system from the endosperm of the seed of Gleditsia triacanthos.

Exhaustive extraction of the endosperm from the seed of Gleditsia triacanthos using water at room temperature and 50 degrees C left a residue, which was further extracted at 95 degrees C. Precipitation of this extract with 2-propanol yielded major amounts of galactomannan components, while the supernatant was mainly composed of arabinose-rich constituents. Two fractions were obtained by anion-exchange chromatography. The fraction that eluted with water is an arabinan with (1-->5) alpha-L linkages and branching mainly on C-2, accompanied with equal amounts of a low-galactose galactomannan oligo

Differential effects of cooking in open cups and in sealed cellophane bags on the residual cyanide content of moi-moi, a processed legume product.

Bean pastes from the black eyed bean (Vigna unguiculata), pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) and Ife brown (V. unguiculata) were processed into a popular West African snack moi-moi, cooked in open aluminium cups and in sealed, thin, transparent cellophane bags. The residual total, free and bound cyanide levels of moi-moi from both processes were determined using a combination of enzymatic and colorimetric procedures. Results showed that in all cases, cooking of moi-moi in open aluminium cups caused retention of significantly higher (P<0.05) residual free cyanide than cooking in sealed cellophane bags.

Microbial ecological mechanism of Blumea balsamifera residue promoting fermentation quality and improving feed value of Pennisetum silage.

BACKGROUND: Pennisetum is the most widely used forage in tropical regions around the world but its silage preservation is often challenged by high temperature, humidity, and the proliferation of undesirable bacteria. Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC., a native medicinal plant and industrial crop, produces residues with notable antibacterial and antioxidant properties, suggesting potential as a silage additive. However, its effects and underlying mechanisms on silage fermentation and feeding value are unclear. RESULTS: In this study, we evaluated the impact of B. balsamifera residue on the fermentat

Fermentation of legumes as a strategy to enhance nutritional and sensory properties and modulate gut microbiome and human health.

Legumes represent a valuable and vegetable source of proteins and fiber with a very low environmental footprint production, therefore, both dietary guidelines and international agencies suggest increasing their production and consumption. Despite their favorable nutritional composition, they also naturally contain antinutritional factors such as phytic acid, that limit the absorption of micronutrients. This, coupled with the lower bioavailability of proteins as compared with meat, diminishes the biological and economic value of legumes. However, recent studies have shed a light on the power of

Innovative Emerging Technologies for Pulse Flour Functionalization: A Comparison With Conventional Thermal and Biological Techniques.

Pulse flours, such as those from peas, beans, and chickpeas, are highly valued for their nutritional density, making them essential for meeting the rising global demand for plant-based and gluten-free foods. Despite these nutritional advantages, industrial use is limited by specific sensorial, nutritional, and technological constraints. Overcoming these challenges requires targeted functionalization strategies designed to impart improved and predictable techno-functional properties. This review describes the characteristics of pulse flours and assesses both conventional (thermal, biological, a

Bean protein-based micro and nano-delivery systems for food bioactives: enhancing stability, absorption, and food matrix compatibility.

Many health-beneficial bioactive compounds exhibit poor solubility, chemical instability, and limited bioavailability within food matrices. Encapsulation protects bioactive compounds from environmental conditions and facilitates their controlled release and absorption in the human body. Bean proteins have recently gained attention as sustainable carrier materials for the delivery of bioactive compounds through micro- and nanoencapsulation methods. Their amphiphilic structure and ability to form films, gels, and emulsions make them a promising alternative to animal- and soy-based proteins. This

The haunting of the Soul's hill: uncoupled responses of plant functional traits and soil microbes to serpentine soils lead to Bonsai effect in the Neotropics.

We investigated the plant-soil linkages of Copaifera langsdorffii Desf., a widely distributed species in the Neotropics, and how the serpentine syndrome leads to dwarfism by comparing soil microbes, soil properties and tree functional traits in serpentine and non-serpentine soils. For this study, we evaluated the presence of heavy metals in the soils and how they affect plant functional traits; differences in the C:N ratio between serpentine and non-serpentine sites as well as soil microbiome by using phospholipid fatty acid technique approach to assess microbial functional groups. We further

Pharmacological effects of D-Pinitol - A comprehensive review.

In recent years, the application of phytochemicals to prevent or treat diseases has received greater attention. These phytochemicals have little or no toxicity against healthy tissues and are thus considered as ideal compounds. An impressive number of modern drugs are obtained from natural sources based on their traditional value. D-Pinitol is a natural compound that is derived from soy and soy products. It is a potentially active molecule that belongs to the class of inositols. D-pinitol has been pharmacologically evaluated for its potent antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ca

Specialized Metabolites from the Allelopathic Plant Retama raetam as Potential Biopesticides.

To cope with the rising food demand, modern agriculture practices are based on the indiscriminate use of agrochemicals. Although this strategy leads to a temporary solution, it also severely damages the environment, representing a risk to human health. A sustainable alternative to agrochemicals is the use of plant metabolites and plant-based pesticides, known to have minimal environmental impact compared to synthetic pesticides. Retama raetam is a shrub growing in Algeria's desert areas, where it is commonly used in traditional medicine because of its antiseptic and antipyretic properties. Fur

Organosulfide profile and hydrogen sulfide-releasing capacity of stinky bean (Parkia speciosa) oil: Effects of pH and extraction methods.

Stinky beans (Parkia speciosa) were hydrodistilled and solvent-extracted and the oil obtained was analyzed by GC-MS/FID. Nine cyclic and one acyclic organosulfides were identified comprising 36% of total volatiles. Solvent extracts contained significantly (p < 0.05) higher total organosulfides (680 ppm) as compared to distilled oil (444 ppm). The concentrations of organosulfides are highly dependent on the pH values of the matrix, with control sample (pH 5.40) giving the highest total organosulfides (424 ppm) followed by that of pH 7.0 (234 ppm), pH 9.0 (195 ppm), and pH 3.0 (152 ppm). The H2S

Chemical defense balanced by sequestration and de novo biosynthesis in a lepidopteran specialist.

The evolution of sequestration (uptake and accumulation) relative to de novo biosynthesis of chemical defense compounds is poorly understood, as is the interplay between these two strategies. The Burnet moth Zygaena filipendulae (Lepidoptera) and its food-plant Lotus corniculatus (Fabaceae) poses an exemplary case study of these questions, as Z. filipendulae belongs to the only insect family known to both de novo biosynthesize and sequester the same defense compounds directly from its food-plant. Z. filipendulae and L. corniculatus both contain the two cyanogenic glucosides linamarin and lotau…

Effect of a non-forage fiber of red bean hulls on ruminal mat characteristics, chewing activity and milk production in dairy cows.

The evaluation of red bean hulls (RBH) as a non-forage fiber source on ruminal mat formation, chewing activity and milk production was determined using two experiments. In experiment 1, four non-lactating, rumen-cannulated Holstein cows were offered a control diet of 60.1% forage, and an RBH diet of 51.6% forage and 9.4% RBH. Although the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake was higher with the RBH diet than the control diet, the physically effective NDF (peNDF) intake was lower. The rumination period tended to be longer with the RBH diet than with the control diet and the ruminal mat was form
