Facial Motion Enhances Face Recognition and Guides Visual Attention in Typical Recognisers and Developmental Prosopagnosia.

Background: Facial motion has been shown to enhance face recognition in typical recognisers and increase attention to diagnostic internal facial features (eyes, nose and mouth), which may support improved recognition. The present study aimed to replicate these effects and assess whether they extend to individuals with developmental prosopagnosia (DP), who show impairments in face recognition and reduced attention to the internal features. Methods: Participants completed a famous face recognition task (Experiment 1) and an unfamiliar old/new recognition task (Experiment 2), with both static and

Testing the relationships between facial emotion recognition, levels of Autistic traits, and eye gaze patterns.

Individuals with high levels of Autistic traits often experience challenges in interpreting others' emotions, potentially stemming from atypical patterns of visual attention to facial cues. This study investigates whether levels of Autistic traits in a non-clinical sample are associated with overall emotion recognition accuracy, differential attention to facial areas of interest (eyes, mouth, and other regions), and emotion-specific recognition impairments. Eighty-one participants were presented with videos of actors displaying the six basic emotions (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness,

Facial emotion recognition in patients with depression compared to healthy controls when using human avatars.

The negative, mood-congruent cognitive bias described in depression, as well as excessive rumination, have been found to interfere with emotional processing. This study focuses on the assessment of facial recognition of emotions in patients with depression through a new set of dynamic virtual faces (DVFs). The sample consisted of 54 stable patients compared to 54 healthy controls. The experiment consisted in an emotion recognition task using non-immersive virtual reality (VR) with DVFs of six basic emotions and neutral expression. Patients with depression showed a worst performance in facial a…

IMoVR-Net: A robust interpretable network for multi-ocular lesion recognition from TAO facial images.

Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is an organ-specific autoimmune disease that seriously affects patient's life and health. However, the early diagnosis of TAO is highly dependent on the physician's subjective experience. Moreover, the currently proposed deep learning networks for eye diseases do not provide robust interpretability concerning feature learning paradigm, model structure, and the number of neurons. But the mentioned components are very important for model interpretability and are key factors that severely affect the transparency of the model. Therefore, a robust interpretab

Neural Correlates of Facial Emotion Recognition Impairment in Blepharospasm: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

Selective impairment in recognizing facial expressions of disgust was reported in patients with focal dystonia several years ago, but the basic neural mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Therefore, we investigated whether dysfunction of the brain network involved in disgust recognition processing was related to this selective impairment in blepharospasm. Facial emotion recognition evaluations and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were performed in 33 blepharospasm patients and 33 healthy controls (HCs). The disgust processing network was constructed, and modularity analyses

Early Posterior Negativity as Facial Emotion Recognition Index in Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Studies indicate that children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have deficits in social and emotional functions. It can be hypothesized that these children have some deficits in early stages of facial emotion discrimination. Based on this hypothesis, the present study investigated neural correlates of early visual processing during emotional face recognition in this group compared with typically developing children using the Event-Related Potentials (ERPs). METHODS: Nineteen boys between the ages of 7 and 11 years diagnosed with ADHD (Combined type) based on

Mechanisms of facial emotion recognition in autism spectrum disorders: Insights from eye tracking and electroencephalography.

While behavioural difficulties in facial emotion recognition (FER) have been observed in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), behavioural studies alone are not suited to elucidate the specific nature of FER challenges in ASD. Eye tracking (ET) and electroencephalography (EEG) provide insights in to the attentional and neurological correlates of performance, and may therefore provide insight in to the mechanisms underpinning FER in ASD. Given that these processes develop over the course of the developmental trajectory, there is a need to synthesise findings in regard to the developm

Joint recognition-expression impairment of facial emotions in Huntington's disease despite intact understanding of feelings.

Patients with Huntington's disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disorder that causes major motor impairments, also show cognitive and emotional deficits. While their deficit in recognising emotions has been explored in depth, little is known about their ability to express emotions and understand their feelings. If these faculties were impaired, patients might not only mis-read emotion expressions in others but their own emotions might be mis-interpreted by others as well, or thirdly, they might have difficulties understanding and describing their feelings. We compared the performance of recogniti

Impaired recognition of fear facial expressions in 5-HTTLPR S-polymorphism carriers following tryptophan depletion.

RATIONALE: Genotype at the 5' promoter region (5-HTTLPR) of the serotonin transporter has been implicated in moderating the effects of acute tryptophan depletion on neurocognitive functioning. Acute tryptophan depletion has been associated with the processing of fear-relevant cues, such as emotional expressions, but the effect of genotype at the 5-HTTLPR has not been assessed. OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the effects of acute tryptophan depletion on the recognition of standardized facial expressions of emotions in healthy volunteers classified as ll homozygotes or s carriers. Deficits in facial emotion recognition in temporal lobe epilepsy: Comprehensive understanding from cognitive neuroscience perspectives.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a key aspect of social cognition, crucial for social interactions. Recent studies have focused on deficits in FER among patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and the factors influencing these deficits. Research suggests that brain damage caused by epilepsy may lead to specific impairments in recognizing emotions, with lateralization of epilepsy and the emotional intensity of stimuli playing important roles. Additionally, interactions between emotion type, emotional intensity, and the age of onset of epilepsy may contribute to these recognition deficits.

Eye-gaze Strategies During Facial Emotion Recognition in Neurodegenerative Diseases and Links With Neuropsychiatric Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Facial emotion recognition (FER) is primarily and severely impaired in individuals with the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and is often mildy impaired in individuals with Alzheimer disease (AD) or Parkinson disease (PD). Such impairment is associated with inappropriate social behaviors. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether FER impairment is linked to the use of inappropriate eye-gaze strategies to decode facial emotions, leading to misinterpretation of others' intentions and then to behavioral disorders. METHOD: We assessed FER in 9 individuals with bvFTD, 23 wi

Facial emotion recognition and mood symptom course in young adults with childhood-onset bipolar disorder.

Facial emotion recognition deficits are common in bipolar disorder (BD) and associated with impairment. However, the relationship between facial emotion recognition and mood course is not well understood. This study examined facial emotion recognition and subsequent mood symptoms in young adults with childhood-onset BD versus typically developing controls (TDCs). The sample included 116 young adults (ages 18-30, 58% male, 78% White) with prospectively verified childhood-onset BD (n = 52) and TDCs (n = 64). At baseline, participants completed a facial emotion recognition task (Diagnostic Analys

Automated recognition of spontaneous facial expression in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: parsing response variability.

BACKGROUND: Reduction or differences in facial expression are a core diagnostic feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet evidence regarding the extent of this discrepancy is limited and inconsistent. Use of automated facial expression detection technology enables accurate and efficient tracking of facial expressions that has potential to identify individual response differences. METHODS: Children and adults with ASD (N = 124) and typically developing (TD, N = 41) were shown short clips of "funny videos." Using automated facial analysis software, we investigated differences between ASD a

Can childhood trauma influence facial emotion recognition independently from a diagnosis of severe mental disorder?

INTRODUCTION: Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a fundamental component in social interaction. We know that FER is disturbed in patients with severe mental disorder (SMD), as well as those with a history of childhood trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We intend to analyze the possible relationship between the existence of trauma in childhood irrespective of a SMD, measured by the CTQ scale and facial expression recognition, in a sample of three types of subjects (n=321): healthy controls (n=179), patients with BPD (n=69) and patients with a first psychotic episode (n=73). Likewise, clinical and
