Tumour characteristics and survival in familial breast cancer prospectively diagnosed by annual mammography.

Women from breast cancer families without a demonstrable BRCA1/2 mutation were subjected to annual mammography from age 30 years onwards. One-hundred and ninety-eight patients were diagnosed prospectively with invasive breast cancer and followed for a total of 1513 years. Overall 10-year survival was 88 %. Together with our previous report that women in such kindreds had about twice the population risk of breast cancer, the combined conclusion was that the overall chances of developing breast cancer causing death within 10 years before 50 years of age was 1 % or less when subjected to annual m

Evaluation of endoscopic characteristics of upper gastrointestinal polyps in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis.

BACKGROUND: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a disease inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. Most FAP patients develop upper gastrointestinal polyps; especially those in the antrum and duodenum are usually neoplastic. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of gastroduodenal polyps in Iranian FAP patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 28 patients affected by FAP underwent front-view and side-view endoscopy. Papillary biopsies were performed in all patients. Location of polyps, their number and size, pathology study, patient general information (gender, age, family history

Anxious and non-anxious forms of major depression: familial, personality and symptom characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Earlier clinical studies have suggested consistent differences between anxious and non-anxious depression. The aim of this study was to compare parental pathology, personality and symptom characteristics in three groups of probands from the general population: depression with and without generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and with other anxiety disorders. Because patients without GAD may have experienced anxious symptoms for up to 5 months, we also considered GAD with a duration of only 1 month to produce a group of depressions largely unaffected by anxiety. METHOD: Depressive and

Clinical characteristics of familial versus sporadic alcoholism in a sample of male and female patients.

Presence of a family history of alcoholism may predict clinical characteristics in affected subjects, such as an earlier age at onset. More frequent and severe social maladjustment and somatic complications are also regularly cited for familial alcoholism, although subject to many other confusing factors. We analysed the clinical specificities of 79 alcohol-dependent inpatients according to the absence versus presence of family history of alcoholism. Patients were evaluated for lifetime psychiatric morbidity with the Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies (DIGS), for somatic complications wi

Clinical, laboratory and molecular characteristics of children with Familial Mediterranean Fever-associated vasculitis.

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by recurrent self-limited attacks of fever accompanied by peritonitis, pleuritis and arthritis. Approximately 5% of individuals with FMF have been reported to have Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) and about 1% have polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). Protracted febrile myalgia is another vasculitis-associated clinical entity among patients with FMF. Recently, the gene responsible for FMF, MEFV, has been cloned and four missense mutations (M680I, M694V, V726A and M694I) have been described. In this report, we present clini

The influence of sociodemographic characteristics on familial alcohol problems: data from a community sample.

The moderating influence of race (black versus white), age, sex, and socioeconomic status on the relationship between alcohol abuse/dependence in offspring and a family history of alcoholism/problem drinking was investigated in a representative general population sample (N = 1659). Significant family history by race by age and family history by race by sex interactions were observed when predicting lifetime risk of alcohol abuse/dependence in offspring. Socioeconomic status did not moderate the effect of familial alcoholism/problem drinking on offspring alcohol abuse/dependence. Relative odds

Analysis of 138 consecutive ovarian cancer patients: incidence and characteristics of familial cases.

Eight families with two or more first-degree relatives affected with ovarian carcinoma were identified among a series of 138 consecutive ovarian cancer patients. History of breast cancer was reported in six of the eight families. Five of 19 patients with familial cancer developed ovarian cancer as a second primary tumor following breast carcinoma, whereas only 6/130 sporadic cases had a previous history of breast cancer. No significant difference was detected in clinical and pathological features between sporadic and familial cases. However, in three high-risk families ovarian cancer tended to

Characteristics of 86 families and 142 children diagnosed with Pediatric Condition Falsification in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to analyse cases of Pediatric Condition Falsification reported to the Child Abuse Counseling and Reporting Center (CACRC) to gain more insight into possible trends or common factors that could result in an earlier diagnosis of Pediatric Condition Falsification (PCF) and identify which information is lacking. This study is the first to use the data of PCF cases reported to the CACRC in the Netherlands. METHODS: All CACRC-files with suspected and confirmed PCF were collected over a five-year period, from January 2008 to December 2013, two of 26 CACRCs did no

Clinical Characteristics and Mutation Spectrum of Neurofibromatosis Type 1 in 27 Turkish Families.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurocutaneous disorder that results in a predisposition to the growth of multiple tumors in the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, and the skin. The clinical manifestations of neurofibromatosis are associated with loss of neurofibromin expression which causes the upregulation of the RAS pathway. Although neurofibromatosis type 1 can be diagnosed based on the National Institutes of Health criteria, sometimes the diagnosis is difficult, in cases where the characteristic features do not develop. Moreover, other RAS-related disor

The BRCA1 exon 13 duplication: clinical characteristics of 22 families in Northern Sweden.

The clinical management of BRCA1/2 mutation carriers requires accurate cancer risk estimates. Cancer risks vary according to type and location of the mutation and since there is limited information about mutation-specific cancer risks, genotype-phenotype correlation studies are needed. This is a report of 22 families with the same mutation, BRCA1 duplication exon 13, a mutation that is found world-wide, with the objective to describe the cancer history found in these families. We studied 69 confirmed carriers, 53 women and 16 men, and additionally 29 women who were clinically expected carriers

Clinical, Anthropometric and Biochemical Characteristics of Patients with or without Genetically Confirmed Familial Hypercholesterolemia.

BACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common autosomal dominant disorder, characterized by a high level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and a high risk of premature cardiovascular disease. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical and anthropometric characteristics of patients with the familiar hypercholesterolemia (FH) phenotype, with or without genetic confirmation of FH. METHODS: Forty-five patients with LDL-C > 190 mg/dl were genotyped for six FH-related genes: LDLR, APOB, PCSK9, LDLRAP1, LIPA and APOE. Patients who tested positive for any of these mutations were consi

Difference in Aneurysm Characteristics between Patients with Familial and Sporadic Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Haemorrhage.

OBJECT: Patients with familial intracranial aneurysms (IA) have a higher risk of rupture than patients with sporadic IA. We compared geometric and morphological risk factors for aneurysmal rupture between patients with familial and sporadic aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) to analyse if these risk factors contribute to the increased rupture rate of familial IA. METHODS: Geometric and morphological aneurysm characteristics were studied on CT-angiography in a prospectively collected series of patients with familial and sporadic aSAH, admitted between September 2006 and September 2009,

[Dementia in families with a Turkish migration background. Organization and characteristics of domestic care arrangements].

BACKROUND: Until recently public health and health services research has not been concerned with people suffering from dementia with a Turkish migration background as a priority. There is little evidence about the situation of this population; however, it is known that these individuals almost always live with their families and are cared for by their families generally without seeking professional support. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the organization and characteristics of home-based care arrangements for people suffering from dementia with a Turkish migration background fr
