Ultra-Processed Foods and Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Narrative Review of Epidemiology, Mechanisms, and Dietary Implications.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs), industrial formulations rich in refined substrates and additives, have been increasingly examined as plausible contributors to gut dysbiosis and mucosal inflammation relevant to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This narrative review synthesizes epidemiological, mechanistic, and interventional evidence on UPF intake and IBD based on a structured literature search from 2010 to 2025. Large-scale prospective cohorts consistently associate higher UPF intake with increased risk of Crohn's disease (CD), whereas findings for ulcerative colitis (UC) remain weaker or incon

Ultra-Processed Food and Chronic Kidney Disease Risk: A Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis, and Recommendations.

Background: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are formulations of ingredients that are mostly of exclusive industrial use and may contain additives like artificial colors, flavors, or stabilizers. The sale and consumption of these foods have been increasing despite their associations with increased risk for several non-communicable diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). Compared to less processed and perishable foods, UPFs have longer shelf stability, are widely accessible, and are convenient. They also tend to be more affordable and lower in nutritional quality. The aim of this systemat

Neural correlates of appetite in adolescents.

Appetitive characteristics are associated with child adiposity, but their biological underpinnings are unclear. We sought to investigate the neural correlates of psychometric and behavioral measures of appetitive characteristics in youth. Adolescents (14-18y; 39F, 37M) varying in familial obesity risk and body weight (20% with overweight, 24% with obesity) viewed pictures of high energy-density (ED) foods, low-ED foods and non-foods during fMRI scanning on two separate days. On one day participants consumed a 474 ml preload of water (0 kcal, fasted) and on another (counter-balanced) 474 ml mil

On the bioavailability of 2-chloro-2'-deoxyadenosine (CdA). The influence of food and omeprazole.

The pharmacokinetics of oral CdA (0.24 mg/kg) was studied in 4 patients (1 with hairy cell leukaemia and 3 with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia) to determine any effect of food and fasting with and without omeprazole. Food intake did not significantly influence the bioavailability of CdA (42% after food intake vs 46% while fasting) but it did reduce the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) by 40%; 83 compared to 116 nM while fasting. The time to reach maximum concentration (tmax) was delayed about 0.8 h after food intake. Pretreatment with omeprazole did not significantly influence the bio

Exercise, fasting, and mimetics: toward beneficial combinations?

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are associated disorders that involve a multiplicity of tissues. Both fasting and physical exercise are known to counteract dyslipidemia/hyperglycemia. Skeletal muscle plays a key role in the control of blood glucose levels, and the metabolic changes and related signaling pathways in skeletal muscle induced by fasting overlap with those induced by exercise. The reduction of fat disposal has been shown to extend to the liver and to white and brown adipose tissue and to involve an increase in their metabolic activities. In recent years signal transduction pathways rel

Consumption of Foods With Higher Energy Intake Rates is Associated With Greater Energy Intake, Adiposity, and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Adults.

BACKGROUND: Both high energy density and fast eating rates contribute to excess energy intakes. The energy intake rate (EIR; kcal/min) combines both the energy density (kcal/g) and eating rate (g/min) of a food to quantify the typical rate at which calories of different foods are ingested. OBJECTIVES: We describe the EIRs of diets in a multi-ethnic Asian population, and examine relationships between the consumption of high-EIR foods and total energy intake, body composition, and cardio-metabolic risk factors. METHODS: Diet and lifestyle data from the Singapore Multi-Ethnic Cohort 2 (n = 7011

Do hunger and exposure to food affect scores on a measure of hedonic hunger? An experimental study.

Research suggests that visceral bodily states, such as hunger, can affect participants' responses on self-report measures of eating behavior. The present study evaluated the influence of hunger and exposure to palatable food on self-reported hedonic appetite, measured using the Power of Food Scale (PFS). A secondary aim was to evaluate the effects of these manipulations on self-reported external eating and disinhibition. Participants (N=67) ate a standardized meal followed by a 4-h fast. Participants were randomized to one of four groups (Fasted/Food Absence, Fasted/Food Exposure, Fed/Food Abs

Impact of takeaway packaging and storage conditions on microbial safety and cereulide production in grilled pork.

Delivered ready-to-eat foods have grown increasingly popular in many countries worldwide. Takeaway meals are subjected to transport and storage under variable conditions. This study examined the influence of packaging type (open, semi-open and sealed) and storage conditions (6 °C, 20 °C and 30 °C for 30 min, 2 h and 24 h) on the microbiological safety and quality of grilled pork, with particular focus on cross-contamination from contaminated meat, packaging or side dishes. The total bacterial count of non-inoculated grilled pork continuously remained below the detection limit (0.7 log CFU/g),

Safety of Street-Vended Soy Wara in Nigeria.

Soy wara is a common ready-to-eat food whose production and sale are currently unregulated. Microbiological sampling indicated that 21% of the samples had standard plate counts exceeding 100,000 CFU/g, and 14% had Staphylococcus aureus counts higher than 100,000 CFU/g. The occurrence of S. aureus at these levels can result in food poisoning. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated in 14.4% of the samples, although the counts were generally low, typically <1,000 CFU/g. Although counts of L. monocytogenes were low, immunocompromised individuals and children may particularly be at risk of listeriosis

The consequences of ultra-processed foods on brain development during prenatal, adolescent and adult stages.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are highly refined formulations of non-nutritive compounds containing elevated amounts of sugar, fat, sodium, food additives, and dietary emulsifiers. Consumption of UPF is robustly linked to a range of non-communicable diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental disorders in adults. While substantial research highlights the negative health impacts of UPFs in adulthood, their effects on brain development during critical periods of biological vulnerability, pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence, remain underexplored. During pregn

[Racial inequality in the production of fresh vegetables and cut flowers in Argentina: an analysis in Greater La Plata].

This study aims to analyze the configuration of inequalities in one of Argentina's most significant production zones for fresh vegetables and cut flowers, located in Greater La Plata, Buenos Aires Province. This ongoing anthropological research, initiated in 2021, employs methods such as participant observation, interviews, food mapping, and digital ethnography. Among the main findings, we highlight that this production zone exhibits, in both its origins and daily operations, certain racist dynamics that are not solely generated by the host society toward migrants but are disseminated througho

Relationship between Ultra-Processed Food Consumption and Risk of Diabetes Mellitus: A Mini-Review.

Studying the factors that cause diabetes and conducting clinical trials has become a priority, particularly raising awareness of the dangers of the disease and how to overcome it. Diet habits are one of the most important risks that must be understood and carefully applied to reduce the risk of diabetes. Nowadays, consuming enough home-cooked food has become a challenge, particularly with modern life performance, pushing people to use processed foods. Ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption has grown dramatically over the last few decades worldwide. This growth is accompanied by the increasing

Mixed effects of moderate exercise and subsequent various food ingestion on breath acetone.

Acetone, which is exhaled with breath, is a by-product of lipolysis and could be used as a simple, useful indicator of lipolysis in the body because, unlike blood sampling, it can be measured non-invasively and repeatedly. Breath acetone concentration, however, is known to be affected by several factors such as exercise and food. We designed the experiments to evaluate the mixed effect on breath acetone of exercise and food ingestion in order to enhance the usefulness of breath acetone for monitoring fat loss. Seven healthy males performed moderate exercise for twice of 45 min with an interval

Genomic Epidemiology of Cronobacter spp. in Ready-to-Eat Boxed Meals: High Prevalence, Virulence, and Cefazolin Resistance in Nanning, China.

Cronobacter spp. cause severe neonatal meningitis and sepsis with a case-fatality rate exceeding 40%, yet ready-to-eat (RTE) boxed meals, an emerging transmission vehicle, remain unassessed for food protection. This study investigated the prevalence, genomic characteristics, and antimicrobial resistance of Cronobacter spp. in RTE boxed meals in Nanning, China. Among 117 samples, 14 (11.97%) were positive for Cronobacter, including Cronobacter sakazakii (n = 11), C. malonaticus (n = 2), and C. dublinensis (n = 1). Fourteen isolates representing eight serotypes were identified, including one O-a

Balancing the right to health and commercial speech: the approach of Argentina's Supreme Court.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) cause significant human and economic costs globally. Each year, 17 million people die from an NCD before age 70. The burden of NCDs is associated with socioenvironmental, cultural factors and social behavior, including modifiable risk factors like tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption. NCDs can be prevented if healthy environments are guaranteed by the promotion of effective public policies that control the behavior of the tobacco, food and alcohol industries. The regulation of marketing strategies of unhealthy products, and e
