Isolation, identification and genome analysis of an avian hepatitis E virus from white-feathered broilers in China.

Avian hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the major causative pathogen of the big liver and spleen disease, hepatitis-splenomegaly syndrome, and hepatic rupture hemorrhage syndrome. Until now, there are 6 different avian HEV genotypes that infect chickens have been reported worldwide. Epidemiologic investigations of the avian HEV demonstrated that avian HEV has been widely spread in China in recent years. In this study, an avian HEV named YT-aHEV was obtained from white-feathered broilers using LMH cells by virus isolation assay in Shandong province, China. The complete genome consists of 6656-nt exclu

Effects of different claw-shortening devices on claw condition, fear, stress, and feather coverage of layer breeders.

Natural mating colony cage systems for parent-stock layer breeders have been widely adopted by many commercial farms in China. However, the environment is still relatively barren, so enrichment devices such as claw abrasives can be provided. Hens living in wire cages lack the opportunity to abrade their claws, resulting in uncontrolled claw growth. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of claw abrasive devices (CADs). Three different CADs were investigated: abrasive strips (T1), metal plates with holes (T2) and rubber mats with grooves (T3); cages without CADs acted as con

Chewing lice (Insecta, Phthiraptera) and feather mites (Acari, Astigmata) associated with birds of the Cerrado in Central Brazil.

The association of chewing lice and feather mites with wild birds of riparian forest was investigated in the Cerrado biome, Tocantins State, Brazil. The birds were captured with mist nets between July 2008 and March 2009. Ectoparasites were collected by the dust-ruffling technique. Infestation rates were determined by the sampling prevalence, abundance, and mean intensity of ectoparasites. A total of 1,479 chewing lice were collected that were distributed in 3 families and 18 genera, of which 15 taxa were identified to the species level. Sixteen genera of feather mites were found, and 10 speci

Methionine and cystine requirements of slow- and fast-feathering male broilers from zero to three weeks of age.

Two experiments were conducted with fast- (Ross x 3F8) and slow- (Ross x 308) feathering broiler males from 0 to 3 wk of age to determine Met and Cys requirements. A corn-soybean meal basal diet was formulated to be deficient in Met and Cys but was adequate in all other nutrients (22.0% CP; 3,050 kcal ME/kg). In experiment 1, diets contained 0.50% dietary Cys with 0.35, 0.40, 0.45, and 0.50% total Met. Feed conversion (FC) of slow- and fast-feathering males improved in a similar manner to 0.50% Met (linear, P < 0.05). Nitrogen retention measured from 20 to 21 d of age optimized at 0.46% Met (q

Profiles of pulp infiltrating lymphocytes at various times throughout feather regeneration in Smyth line chickens with vitiligo.

Smyth line (SL) chickens develop a spontaneous, autoimmune, posthatch loss of pigment cells (vitiligo) in regenerating feather tissue. Smyth line vitiligo (SLV) is associated with lymphocyte infiltrations prior to and throughout the development of the disorder. It was the purpose of this study to determine the type, relative amounts, and proportions of pulp-infiltrating lymphocytes at various times throughout the growth of regenerating feathers. Feathers were plucked from 8-week-old chickens with and without SLV. Feather pulp cell suspensions were prepared when the regenerating feathers were 2…

Safety and immunogenicity of a novel psittacine beak and feather disease vaccine and optimisation of a thermostable spray-dried formulation.

Beak and feather disease virus (Circovirus parrot) associated Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) continues to pose a threat to wild and captive parrot populations globally, particularly in Australia where it has been listed as a Key Threatening Process to endangered psittacine bird species. A practical and safe vaccine delivery system for immunologically naïve nestling and fledgling birds is crucial for early seroconversion, to provide a fighting chance against high environmental load of wild type infections. Current experimental vaccines rely on recombinant capsid proteins delivered v

Soft Pillows, Hard Consequences: A Case Report Unveiling a Down Feather Neck Granuloma in a Pediatric Patient.

Down pillows, fitted with soft feathers, are commonly used among parents for their children due to their comfort, breathability, and warmth. In this case report, we present a 17-month-old boy who presented with a chief complaint of fever and progressive left neck swelling warranting a surgical excision after a failed course of antibiotic therapy. Histopathologic examination of the lesion demonstrated down feathers with associated granuloma with foreign-body type giant cell reaction, attributed to the use of the down pillow.

Assigning harvested waterfowl to geographic origin using feather δ2H isoscapes: What is the best analytical approach?

Establishing links between breeding, stopover, and wintering sites for migratory species is important for their effective conservation and management. Isotopic assignment methods used to create these connections rely on the use of predictable, established relationships between the isotopic composition of environmental hydrogen and that of the non-exchangeable hydrogen in animal tissues, often in the form of a calibration equation relating feather (δ2Hf) values derived from known-origin individuals and amount-weighted long-term precipitation (δ2Hp) data. The efficacy of assigning waterfowl to m

Effects of lutein on jejunal mucosal barrier function and inflammatory responses in lipopolysaccharide-challenged yellow-feather broilers.

Broilers are frequently exposed to various immunological stresses, which lead to intestinal damage, weakened immunity, and even growth retardation. Lutein, as a kind of carotenoid, possesses antioxidant and immunomodulatory functions. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of lutein on jejunal mucosal barrier function and inflammatory responses of yellow-feather broilers challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). A total of two hundred eight-eight 1-day-old yellow-feather broilers were randomly allocated to 3 groups with 8 replicate cages containing 12 birds each. Birds

Feather pulp: a novel substrate useful for proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy metabolomics and biomarker discovery.

Noninvasive biomarkers of stress that are predictive of poultry health are needed. Feather pulp is highly vascularized and represents a potential source of biomarkers that has not been extensively explored. We investigated the feasibility and use of feather pulp for novel biomarker discovery using 1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR)-based metabolomics. To this end, high quality NMR metabolomic spectra were obtained from chicken feather pulp extracted using either ultrafiltration (UF) or Bligh-Dyer methanol-chloroform (BD) methods. In total, 121 and 160 metabolites were identified
