Inadequate oral feeding as a barrier to discharge in moderately preterm infants.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives describe the frequency that inadequate oral feeding (IOF) is the reason why moderately preterm (MPT) infants remain hospitalized and its association with neonatal morbidities. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study using the NICHD Neonatal Research Network MPT Registry. Multivariable logistic regression was used to describe associations between IOF and continued hospitalization at 36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA). RESULT: A total of 6017 MPT infants from 18 centers were included. Three-thousand three-seventy-six (56%) remained hospitalized at 36 weeks PMA, of whom 1262 (3

Comparison of two tools to assess dyad feeding interaction in infants with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the Mother-Infant/Toddler Feeding Scale (MITFS) and the Nursing Child Assessment Feeding Scale … es of a feeding interaction, and a way for nurses who regularly feed infants to self-evaluate their feeding methods. This may minimize less than optimal interactions and allow for optimal support for infants during feedings by mothers and nurses.

Management factors resulting in a severe reduction in feed intake-induced spiking mortality syndrome in young broiler chicks.

This study aimed to induce spiking mortality syndrome (SMS) in 10-day-old broiler chicks by changing feed particle size (crumble feed to pellet feed) and/or feed source location (from a small feeder at the pen's center to a large feeder at the front of the pen), followed by full day feed deprivation of all broiler chicks on day 11. In total, 396-day-old male Ross 308 broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 4 treatments (Con: without change in feed particle size and feed source location; Par: changing crumble feed to pellet feed on day 10; Loc: changing feed source location on day 10; LocPar:

Lying behaviour and IgG-levels of newborn calves after feeding colostrum via tube and nipple bottle feeding.

Oesophageal tube feeding colostrum is used to ensure sufficient colostrum intake in newborn calves but the impact of tube feeding on animal behaviour is unclear. Therefore the objective of this study was to compare lying behaviour of tube-fed or bottle-fed dairy calves. Calves (n = 37) in 3 groups were offered 3·5 l colostrum 2 h after birth. Calves of the bottle group were fed with a nipple bottle. Calves of the placebo tubing group were tubed for 4 min but no colostrum was given and they were then fed with a nipple bottle. Calves of the tubing group received 3·5 l colostrum via tube feeding.

Effect of frequency of feed delivery on the behavior and productivity of lactating dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feed delivery frequency on the behavioral patterns and productivity of lactating dairy cows. Twelve freestall-housed, lactating Holstein dairy cows, including 6 primiparous (PP) and 6 multiparous (MP), milked 3 ×/d (at 1400, 2200, and 0600 h), were exposed to each of 3 treatments (over 21-d periods) in a replicated Latin square design. Treatments included feed delivery frequency of (1) 1 ×/d (at 1400 h), (2) 2 ×/d (at 1400 and 2200 h), and (3) 3 ×/d (at 1400, 2200, and 0600 h). Milk production as well as feeding, lying, and rumination

Feeding and hydration issues for older adults with dementia.

All cultures dictate the need to feed the hungry and create rituals for almost every life passage around the consumption of food and beverage. Yet, in old age and among those who cannot advocate for themselves, mealtime is medicalized and demoted to an insignificant event without dignity or regard for individualized needs. Attention must be paid to not only what people eat, but how they eat, and how they are supported in that process. Kayser-Jones summarized the extensive findings of several ethnographic studies in nursing homes by noting the multi-factorial issues involved in delivering excel

Postpartum Mothers' Experiences With Newborn Weight Checks in the Home.

Few researchers have examined the perspectives of breastfeeding mothers about using a pediatric scale in the home to monitor infant weight. A cross sectional design was used to measure helpfulness, impact on newborn feeding, and confidence among mothers who used a digital scale to monitor newborn weight. Women (N = 69) who had given birth in a community hospital in the Northeast region of the United States used a pediatric scale in the home daily for 2 weeks after birth. An online survey determined helpfulness of the scale, if use of the scale impacted feedings, and confidence in breastfeeding

Examining Milk-Thickening Practices for Infants With Cleft Palate: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: A common intervention to address aspiration and reflux in infants is thickening milk. However, thickening milk may further complicate feeding management for infants with cleft palate using adaptive feeding methods. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify and describe the types of milk thickener used for infants with cleft palate (with or without cleft lip) and the feeding modalities through which thickened milk is administered. METHOD: A comprehensive scoping review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for…

Effects of hatching system on the welfare of broiler chickens in early and later life.

Broiler chicks usually hatch in the hatchery without access to feed and water until placement at the farm. This can affect their health and welfare negatively. Therefore, alternative strategies have been developed, for instance providing chicks with early nutrition in the hatchery or hatching eggs directly on-farm. However, information on the physical and mental welfare of chicks hatched in these systems compared to conventionally hatched chicks is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of alternative hatching systems on the welfare of broiler chickens in early and later

From birth till palatoplasty: Prosthetic procedural limitations and safeguarding infants with palatal cleft.

The most imminent issue to be addressed in a child born with cleft lip and/or palate is restoration of normal feeding. Early surgical treatment for cleft repair is crucial but may need to be postponed until certain age and weight gain is attained in an infant. When other feeding interventions fail in these children, prosthetic obturation of the defect with feeding instructions in the interim period is indicated to ward off the prevailing concerns. However, the entire prosthetic management presents a significant challenge with respect to the child's age, scope of iatrogenic injury to the delica

Review: Quantifying animal feeding behaviour with a focus on pigs.

The study of animal feeding behaviour is of interest to understand feeding, to investigate the effect of treatments and conditions or to predict illness. This paper reviews the different steps to undertake when studying animal feeding behaviour, with illustrations for group-housed pigs. First, one must be aware of the mechanisms that control feeding and the various influences that can change feeding behaviour. Satiety is shown to largely influence free feeding (ad libitum and without an operant condition) in animals, but 'free' feeding seems a very fragile process, given the many factors that

A Retrospective Study Identifying Breast Milk Feeding Disparities in Infants with Cleft Palate.

BACKGROUND: Breast milk represents the optimal substrate for all infants, including those with a cleft palate for whom growth may be compromised. OBJECTIVES: Frequency of breast milk feeding at the breast and per feeder (bottle, cup, enteral tube) in infants with cleft palate was determined and compared with rates reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A secondary aim was to review growth status of the infants. DESIGN: This study represents a 5-year retrospective review using the electronic medical record. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Patients were ≤12 months old at the ti

[Not only bottles. Glass baby's bottles in between the second half of XIXth century and the first decades of the XXth].

Mother's milk is the best food for the baby. The need to use foods other than mother's milk has always represented a challenging problem to be solved. The author warns that the high mortality during the first year of life during the early years of the XXth century (20%) peaked at an amazing 80% in children artificially fed at orphanages. In the considered years, the usage of baby's bottle spread among babies that could not be fed by mothers or wet-nurses. The idea of rubber teat 1845 and of automatic devices for the production of glass bottle - 1903 - contributed to the diffusion of the baby's
