Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are a significant constraint to pasture-based sheep production worldwide. Anthelmintic resistance (AR) has been reported in most sheep-raising areas in the world, yet little is known about the AR status in Canada. This study was conducted to determine the frequency of AR in GIN in sheep flocks in Ontario, Canada. Forty-seven sheep flocks were enrolled in the study, and their level of parasitism was monitored monthly throughout a grazing season by analyzing owner-acquired fecal samples from 15 grazing lambs per flock. When the mean GIN fecal egg count (FEC) reac

Resistance to fenbendazole, ivermectin, and moxidectin was explored by a fecal egg count reduction test in four meat sheep flocks in southwestern France where anthelmintic resistance was suspected. The FECR test results of the present study confirmed the presence of benzimidazole resistance in three out of the four farms and the presence of ivermectin resistance in one flock. In addition, a suspicion of moxidectin resistance was shown in this latter farm. Both conventional morphological and molecular identifications were performed on larval cultures before and after the treatment in the studie

Porcine cysticercosis, an infection caused by Taenia solium metacestodes, is continuously being reported in low-income countries of Latin America, Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. The disease was declared eradicable by the International Task Force for Diseases Eradication (ITFDE) in 1993, and it is listed among the 17 WHO Neglected Tropical Diseases and Neglected Zoonoses that are potentially eradicable. In view of that, WHO has proposed a step-wise approach to its elimination, including chemotherapy of infected pigs. Different drugs have been tested on porcine cysticercosis with varying efficaci

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) represent a recurring challenge for beef cattle production, because infections are predominantly subclinical and current diagnostic tools have limited ability to detect affected animals before significant losses to the production chain occur. With the advent of new technologies, it has become possible to obtain a wide range of information from animal serum. Through metabolomics, it is possible to expand knowledge of the host-parasite relationship, identify biomarkers with diagnostic potential, and prospect new molecules that may aid in treatment. Thus, the pre

This paper reviews the immunomodulatory effects (immunosuppression or immunoactivation) of various anthelmintics including levamisole, fenvalerate, dieldrin, carbofuran, aminocarb, thiabendazole, fenbendazole, oxfendazole and ivermectin. The induced modulation of immune function may occur via direct and/or indirect mechanisms. The immunomodulatory effects of these anti-parasitics have been studied in a variety of bacterial (e.g. brucellosis, salmonellosis, paratuberculosis, mastitis), viral (e.g. infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, Herpes, foot and mouth disease), parasitic (e.g. onchocerciasis

Between September 1982 and January 1984, verminous colitis was diagnosed post mortem in eight red-footed tortoises (Geochelone carbonaria) and three leopard tortoises (Geochelone pardalis) from the reptile collection of the National Zoological Park. This represented 69% of 16 tortoise necropsy accessions for that period. Etiology was determined to be a viviparous pinworm-like nematode of the genus Proatractis (Family Atractidae). Clinical signs were either nonspecific, consisting of anorexia, lethargy, and depression, or were absent. Limited trials with piperazine citrate and fenbendazole appe

A fifteen-month-old Pembroke Welsh corgi with respiratory distress, exercise intolerance, and moderate regenerative anemia was referred to The Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Small Animal Hospital.Hematology revealed moderate regenerative anemia without evidence of hemolysis. Thoracic radiographs showed a generalized mixed interstitial to alveolar lung pattern and enlarged pulmonary arteries. Changes suggestive of moderate pulmonary hypertension were noted on echocardiography. Baermann fecal diagnostic flotation identified large numbers of Angiostrongylus vasorum larvae, and the AngioDe

Mebendazole (MBZ) residues in animal-derived foods pose significant public health risks, necessitating robust monitoring tools. In this study, a high-specificity nanobody (Nb) against MBZ was isolated from an alpaca-derived phage display library. The selected Nb exhibited superior thermal stability, retaining over 90% of its binding activity even after 40 min of incubation, and maintaining more than 60% activity after 90 min, whereas conventional rabbit IgG and chicken IgY against MBZ lost all activity under identical conditions. A competitive ELISA developed using this Nb achieved an IC50 of

AIMS: The role of the immune response to cyathostomin infections in horses remains unknown. Intestinal goblet cell hyperplasia has previously been noted as a component in cyathostomin infection; however, the function is unclear. The goal of this study was to evaluate the local and systemic gene expression to cyathostomin infections following larvicidal treatment and explore their relation to goblet cells.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty-six ponies with naturally acquired cyathostomin infections were randomly allocated into three groups: fenbendazole-treated (10 mg/kg PO 5 days), moxidectin-treate

We conducted a study in an endemic area of both Oesophagostomum bifurcum and Necator americanus in northern Ghana to examine the possibility of pigs acting as transport hosts for these two human helminth species, due to the commonly observed coprophagic habits of pigs. Under controlled conditions four parasite-free pigs consumed fresh faeces from people heavily infected with both helminths, and faeces were subsequently collected from the rectum of the pigs from 5 to 50 h post-feeding. Four to five per cent of the O. bifurcum and N. americanus eggs fed to the pigs were viable and retrieved as t

Differences in bioavailability of many drugs from their various dosage forms have been shown to be relatively common in human medicine. Although comparable bioavailability ('bioequivalence') is though to ensure comparable clinical effectiveness and safety ('therapeutic equivalence'), the relationship between bioinequivalence and therapeutic inequivalence is less clear. Thus the prevalence of clinically important differences in bioavailability is unknown. While similar concerns have arisen about drug products used in small animal practice, there have been few investigations and some earlier rep

To avoid disease outbreaks caused by gastro-intestinal nematodes different prophylactic measures are recommended. In this connection pasture hygienic achievements and anthelmintics are used. In practice it is often difficult to realize pasture hygienic steps as move the animals to parasite free areas and to avoid that they come back to the infected. In many cases the parasite control is limited to routine deworming. Our intention was to study if anthelmintic treatment without other measures had any effect on weight gain and number of eggs in faeces in calves naturally infected with Ostertagia

Giardia duodenalis is a facultative pathogenic intestinal parasite. Giardiosis in dogs and cats may appear with or without clinical signs. Typical signs include diarrhea with or without vomiting. The prevalence in young animals is high and may amount to up to 50%. There are 8 different genotypes (A - H), which are called assemblages. Assemblages C and D are most common in dogs and assemblage F most frequent in cats. However, animals may also be infected with the zoonotically effective assemblages A and B or exhibit mixed infections. The immunofluorescence test (IFA), the enzyme-linked immunoso

The BALB/C mouse infected with Brugia pahangi has been evaluated as a model for the selection of filaricidal compounds with activity against immature worms. Mice were infected by the intraperitoneal inoculation of 50 infective larvae and candidate compounds were administered by the intraperitoneal (i.p.), subcutaneous or oral route once daily from day 4 to day 8 post infection. Animals were examined on days 29 to 32 post infection. Variation in the larval recoveries from undrugged mice within and between experimental groups limited the value of drug assessments based upon percentage worm recov

Third-stage larvae of the major human and canine Ancylostoma hookworm species have the capacity to undergo developmental arrest in the somatic tissues of an infected host. Arrested larvae reactivate at opportune periods such as pregnancy, which results in the transmammary transmission of infection to the nursing neonates. Using murine paratenic hosts to focus specifically on tissue-arrested stages of Ancylostoma caninum, the present study found that neither recommended nor elevated doses of commonly used anthelmintics were effective in eliminating latent infections at the accepted standard of

This study compared results obtained with five different fecal egg count reduction (FECR) calculation methods for defining resistance to ivermectin, fenbendazole, and levamisole in gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep in a temperate continental climate: FECR1 and FECR2 used pre-and posttreatment fecal egg count (FEC) means from both treated and control animals, but FECR1 used arithmetic means, whereas FECR2 used geometric means; FECR3 used arithmetic means for pre- and posttreatment FECs from treated animals only; FECR4 was calculated using only arithmetic means for posttreatment FECs from trea
