BACKGROUND: Fibrin glue is an absorbable blood-derived product, a biological tissue adhesive which imitates the final stages of the coagulation cascade, it produces a firm clot, forming a seal along the whole length of the wound, the resultant fibrin clot degrades physiologically into granulation tissue 2 weeks after the application. Biological glue has been used extensively in many forms of surgical procedures. Its use in eye surgery has grown lately as we have evidence that showed it was effective in securing conjunctival grafts in pterygium surgery, in securing wounds after glaucoma surgery

The development of bioadhesives is an important, yet challenging task as seemingly mutually exclusive properties need to be combined in one material, that is, strong adhesion, water resistance, and high biocompatibility. Here, a biocompatible and biodegradable protein-based bioadhesive patch (PBP) with high adhesion strength and low immunogenic response is reported. PBP exists as a strong adhesion for biological surfaces, which is higher than some conventional bioadhesives (i.e., polyethylene glycol and fibrin). Robust adhesion and strength are realized through the removal of interfacial water

The healing process of osteochondral fracture was studied experimentally and clinically, using fibrin adhesive system (FAS) containing highly concentrated and freeze-dried fibrinogen, thrombin and factor XIII. Osteochondral fractures were made in the femoral condyle of the rabbit. Most of the adhered fibrin was gradually absorbed at the fracture site and at the same time was replaced with granulation tissue containing abundant capillaries, fibroblasts and osteoblasts, by the 10th day. Complete fracture healing was achieved histologically in one month. Fifteen cases of intraarticular osteochond

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal adhesions are fibrous bands of tissue connecting normally separated organs and frequently involve the fat-laden greater omentum. Remodelling of fibrin-rich exudate under reduced fibrinolytic conditions is thought to initiate adhesion formation following surgery. It is unclear whether adhesions that involve the omentum develop in a similar manner. To improve understanding of omental adhesion formation, adipose tissue distribution, cell proliferation and procollagen type I gene expression were investigated in a murine surgical model and in established omental adhesions fro

Alendronate (ALN) is a bisphosphonate drug that is widely used for the treatment of osteoporosis. Furthermore, local delivery of ALN has the potential to improve the bone regeneration. This study was designed to investigate an ALN-containing fibrin (fibrin/ALN) gel and evaluate the effect of this gel on both in vitro cellular behavior using human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and in vivo bone regenerative capacity. Fibrin hydrogels were fabricated using various ALN concentrations (10-7-10-4 M) with fibrin glue and the morphology, mechanical properties, and ALN release kinetics were characteri

Fibrin glue (FG) is an effective hemostatic agent applied topically to the spleen. In this study, FG was found to be an effective hemostatic agent when applied topically in standardized wounds of the canine liver, spleen, and pancreas. It was markedly more effective, however, when injected intraparenchymally. In a case of severe blunt trauma in a patient with acute alcoholic hepatitis, intraparenchymal FG was lifesaving. Fibrin glue is a useful adjunct in the management of trauma to all the abdominal solid viscera. Intraparenchymal injection is the preferred mode of FG application.

Meniscus repair is often limited by poor intrinsic healing, an adverse oxidative-inflammatory microenvironment, and insufficient mechanical continuity across the tear interface. Here, we engineered a solvent-free injectable polyurethane adhesive (PUA) loaded with connective tissue growth factor (PUA@CTGF) for meniscus tear repair that combines rapid wet interfacial stabilization, compliant defect filling, and prolonged CTGF release. The adhesive showed rapid in situ curing, high apparent initial wet lap-shear strength, and stable short-cycle compressive behavior in a 100-cycle loading-unloadin

Various studies have focused on the application of fibrin sealants (FS) in thyroid surgery. Utilizing a meta-analysis, this systematic review analyzed the findings of recent randomized controlled trials on the safety and efficacy of FS in patients who underwent thyroidectomy. The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and Medline databases were searched for relevant studies, without any language restrictions. Seven randomized controlled trials were included in the originally identified 69 studies. Overall, 652 patients received FS during thyroid surgery; their outcomes were compared

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pancreatic fistula is one of the most frequent and potentially life-threatening complications following pancreatic resections. Fibrin sealants are introduced to reduce postoperative pancreatic fistula by some surgeons. However, the use of fibrin sealants during pancreatic surgery is controversial. This is an update of a Cochrane Review last published in 2016.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the safety, effectiveness, and potential adverse effects of fibrin sealants for the prevention of postoperative pancreatic fistula following pancreatic surgery.

AIM: Leptomeningeal adhesions and fibrosis in the spinal peridural space are the most common causes of post-laminectomy syndrome. Fibrin sealant agents and membrane barriers are commonly used for hemostasis and sealing purposes in spinal surgery. Peridural fibrosis may be a risk of the usage of these topical agents. In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of Cova ™, Tisseel® and Adcon ® Gel on the development of spinal peridural fibrosis in the experimental rat model.

A 48-year-old male patient was operated for pterygium. During surgery, the autograft surface was lost because of sponge contact. Presumed epithelial face of the autograft subsequently was attached to the bare sclera with fibrin glue. It was observed that the center of the autograft was freely movable with sponge. This finding showed the inverse implantation of the autograft. Because the glue does not stick to intact corneal or conjunctival epithelium, free movement of the center of the autograft shows that the graft is inversely implanted.

Small bowel obstruction is a complication of laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) frequently caused by adhesions and internal hernia. In addition, anastomotic leak that complicates LRYGB surgery contributes to the mortality of this procedure. Fibrin glue is commonly used intraoperatively for prevention of anastomotic leak and to secure hemostasis. We describe 2 cases of morbidly obese women who underwent LRYGB surgery for weight loss and developed early postoperative small bowel obstruction related to the use of the "EVICEL" fibrin sealant. Of note is that both patients required surgi

PURPOSE: We assessed whether fibrin sealant promotes early catheter removal after pendulous urethral reconstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1997 and 2003, 43 men with complex stricture disease underwent pendulous urethral reconstruction by a single surgeon (AFM). In 18 consecutive cases with a mean stricture length of 7.24 cm from 2000 to 2003 fibrin sealant was applied over a ventral onlay anastomosis performed with running 5-zero polydiaxanone suture. Results were compared with those in 25 men who underwent the procedure without fibrin sealant from 1997 to 2000, who served as a cont

The authors have tried to evaluate the value of fibrin adhesive in 85 cases of urogenital surgery in children. The local hemostatic effect seems to be very useful in urethroplasty for hypospadias. Its application in vesical, ureteral or urethral sutures probably prevents fistulas.
