Intraoral desmoplastic fibroma: a manifestation of tuberous sclerosis.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign but locally aggressive tumor usually recognized as an intraosseous counterpart of soft tissue fibromatosis in both gnathic and extra-gnathic sites. The most common site is mandible followed by pelvis and long bones. Maxilla has been reported to be involved very rarely. Desmoplastic fibroma is recently being considered to be one of the oral manifestations of tuberous sclerosis rather than a coincidental finding. We report an unusual case of a girl with a previous diagnosis of tuberosclerosis who presented at 8 years with an oral lesion diagnosed as desmopla

Ossifying fibroma: a rare cause of orbital inflammation.

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and radiologic features of 4 cases of ossifying fibroma affecting the orbit and to review the literature on orbital involvement by the tumor. METHODS: Small case series. RESULTS: Four patients (3 children and 1 adult) with ossifying fibromas invading the orbit were examined. Two of the 3 children were examined for ossifying fibromas on the orbital roof. One had the psammomatoid form of the disease and the other the trabecular variant. Despite striking differences in the histologic pattern and in the radiologic appearance of the lesions, both children display

Subperiosteal chondromyxoid fibroma: a report of two cases.

Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare cartilage tumor that represents less than 1% of all bone tumors. When in a long bone, it is usually an intramedullary lesion that is eccentrically located in the metaphyseal region. Chondromyxoid fibroma may also have unusual presentations. These include intracortical lesions and subperiosteal lesions. There have been 14 reported cases of intracortical chondromyxoid fibroma, but there have been only four reports of subperiosteal lesions. A subperiosteal location, therefore, is extremely rare for a chondromyxoid fibroma. We present two new cases of subperiosteal

Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma: a report of three cases.

Three cases of calcifying aponeurotic fibroma in an 8-year-old boy, a 43-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man are presented. The lesions involved the substance of the palmaris longus tendon, the lateral aspect of the foot at the base of the fifth metatarsal and the fifth digit of the foot, respectively. The clinical and radiologic findings, including ultrasound and computed tomography, are described. Histologic features included chondroid tissue and calcification within areas of proliferative plump fibroblasts in the younger patient, while in the two adults the lesions were more sharply define

Oncogenic osteomalacia associated with soft tissue chondromyxoid fibroma.

Oncogenic osteomalacia is a rarely described clinical entity characterized by hypophosphatemia, phosphaturia, and a low concentration of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3). It is most often associated with benign mesenchymal tumor and can be cured with surgical removal of the tumor. In this paper, we present a case of oncogenic osteomalacia caused by chondromyxoid fibroma in the soft tissue of the sole of the foot in a 56-year-old woman.

Cortical benign fibromatous tumor (fibroma) of the kidney.

OBJECTIVE: Ischemia (I) causes lack of oxygen delivery to the tissues, leading to hypoxia and cellular damage. Reperfusion (R) is the re-blooded of the tissue; however, it may cause more tissue damage than ischemia alone in some cases. During IR, number of free radicals and metabolic by-products increases. To prevent this, cellular antioxidant system is activated but it may not be enough to restore the cellular activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential protective effect of Ellagic Acid on damage caused by hepatic IR in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty rats were div

Juvenile active ossifying fibroma. Report of four cases.

Juvenile active ossifying fibroma is a rare lesion seldom seen by neurosurgeons. It originates in the paranasal sinuses during childhood, grows slowly, and encroaches on adjacent orbital and cranial compartments. In the past 3 years, four patients with this lesion were seen (three men and one woman; mean age 28 years). The clinical presentations were different with each patient: sinusitis, meningitis, periorbital pain, and a unique case of a juvenile active ossifying fibroma presenting with high-grade internal carotid artery stenosis and ischemic symptoms. Three patients were treated by transf

Ameloblastic fibroma: a follow-up of six cases.

Six cases of ameloblastic fibroma of the jaw are reported, and the radiographic and histologic features and clinical symptoms are described. A conservative surgical approach, including enucleation and mechanical curettage of the surrounding bone, appeared to be successful for these patients.

[Nasopharyngeal fibroma. Our own experience with 12 cases].

Our study is devoted to 12 cases of NPF collated in the ENT department of the Ibn Sina University Hospital in Rabat from 1983 to 1990. All our patients were male, aged from 11 to 24, with late consultation for nasal obstruction and recurring epistaxis. The diagnosis suspected clinically was confirmed by angiography and a CT scan. Surgery of the tumour was the only therapy employed for all our patients. Surgery was preceded by embolization in 5 cases, which considerably reduced per-operative bleeding.

Maxillofacial Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma: A Rare Case Report.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma is a relatively rare lesion affecting the jaws, especially the anterior mandible. The most common clinical presentation is swelling. Diagnosis based on clinical observation only is challenging. Radiological images and histological findings can be misleading due to similitudes with other osteo-fibrous lesions. We report a rare case of a 22-year-old female patient who presented with a painless mass in the upper right maxillary region that has been developing for 10 years. On examination, this tumor was bulky, ulcerated, disfiguring, hard to the touch, and occupying the

Juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma of the inferior turbinate.

Nasal obstruction is a commonly reported issue in the Otorhinolaryngology Outpatient Department. In this case, an early adolescent boy with a long-standing problem of right-sided nasal obstruction since childhood sought consultation. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy revealed a deviation of the nasal septum to the left, coupled with right inferior turbinate hypertrophy, all overlying healthy mucosa. A CT scan of the nose and paranasal sinuses further identified a bony hyperdense lesion with ground glass attenuation, confined to the right inferior turbinate. Subsequent biopsy confirmed juvenile trabec

Maxillary Cystic Ameloblastic Fibroma in a Dalmatian Mix.

A 6-month-old intact male Dalmatian mix puppy was presented for the evaluation of left maxillary swelling due to a suspected cyst and an unerupted left maxillary canine tooth. Removal of the unerupted left maxillary canine tooth (204) and enucleation of the cyst was performed, followed by histological analysis, which identified the maxillary swelling to be a cystic ameloblastic fibroma. Ameloblastic fibromas are rare in companion animals, and to the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first cystic variant reported in dogs. The clinical, radiographic, cone beam computed tomography, and

Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma - A rare case report.

Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma (PCOF) is a relatively rare tumor classified between fibro-osseous lesions. PCOF is an osteogenic neoplasm that ordinarily presents as an epulis-like growth with uncertain pathogenesis. It predominantly affects young adults, with peak prevalence between the first and second decades of life. We present here the case report of a 15-year-old girl, which was previously surgically excised twice and had recurred both the times. The disease duration was 2 years and a follow-up of 1-year was done. Clinical, radiographic, and histological characteristics are discuss

Juvenile Psammomatoid Ossifying Fibroma: Findings on Bone Scan.

Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma is a rare bone-forming tumor seen in craniofacial bones, which affects mainly young patients. We report scintigraphic and SPECT/CT findings of 2 patients diagnosed with this disease. One patient presented with suspicion of fibrous dysplasia and the other with suspected malignancy in the setting of a rapidly growing mass. Both cases highlight the importance of recognizing this type of tumor in young patients with abnormal uptake in paranasal bones and sinuses within the range of potential differential diagnoses including sarcomas, fibrous dysplasia, and o

Fibroma of tendon sheath located within Kager's triangle.

The formation of a fibroma of the tendon sheath, a rare, slow-growing, benign tumor, usually occurs in the upper extremities of young adult males. We present an extremely rare case of a fibroma of the tendon sheath arising adjacent to the Achilles tendon within Kager's triangle in a 41-year-old female. The patient presented with progressive pain localized to the posterior aspect of the left ankle. Complete excision and histopathologic analysis of the fibroma were performed. The patient experienced an uneventful recovery after the intervention and had no evidence of recurrence after 3 months of

Pediatric giant cell fibroma: an unusual case report.

Giant cell fibroma (GCF) is a lesion of oral mucosa which is commonly found on gingiva. The prevalence of GCF is high in Caucasians in the first three decades. It represents 2% to 5% of all fibrous lesions. This report describes a case of GCF on the tongue in a 12 year old Dravidian child. The cause of the lesion could not be determined. Excisional biopsy was performed to establish definitive diagnosis. Microscopically, numerous stellate shaped multi-nucleated giant cells and dense bundles of collagen fibres with a whorled pattern were observed. These collagen fibres were positive for Massons

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma: A case report and review.

Odontogenic tumors mainly occur as intraosseous growths but sometimes may present in a peripheral location on the gingiva where they are referred to as peripheral odontogenic tumors (POTs) which are a rare entity, the most common of them being the peripheral odontogenic fibroma that is an otherwise uncommon, slowly growing, benign odontogenic neoplasm of the periodontal soft tissues. In fact, peripheral odontogenic fibroma is the only POT that is more frequent than its central counterpart. Although considered to be with a potential to recur after excision, the actual recurrence rate is not kno
