Is a smartphone application as accurate as a traditional goniometer for assessing finger joint angles in Dupuytren's disease?

OBJECTIVES: Smartphone applications are available using the smartphone accelerometer to measure angles. This study compared finger joint angle measurements using a traditional goniometer (TG) versus a smartphone application (SPA) in a group of patients with Dupuytren's disease, to determine if they were equally accurate. This was a clinical measurement case series. A group of patients with Dupuytren's disease were invited to participate. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Apple iPhone 7 "Measure" application was used. Participants were asked to place their hand as flat as possible on the table in a cl…

Reliability of the Pediatric Specific Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Scoring Systems for the Elbow, Wrist, and Finger Joints.

OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) is increasingly being used in the evaluation of pediatric musculoskeletal diseases. In order to provide objective assessments of arthritis, reliable MSUS scoring systems are needed. Recently, joint-specific scoring systems for arthritis of the pediatric elbow, wrist, and finger joints were proposed by the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) MSUS workgroup. This study aimed to assess the reliability of these scoring systems when used by sonographers with different levels of expertise. METHODS: Members of the CARRA MSUS wor…

The Lateral Approach in the Surgical Treatment of a Complex Dorsal Metacarpophalangeal Joint Dislocation of the Index Finger.

Complex dorsal metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint dislocations as a result of hyperextension injuries are uncommon in the pediatric population and irreducible to closed maneuvers. Treatment of these complex lesions is invariably surgical, and dorsal or volar approaches are traditionally used. The authors describe a case of a 16-year-old male who suffered a fall onto his outstretched right hand in a soccer game. The patient presented to the ER with pain and deformity of the index finger MCP joint. Radiographs confirmed a complex MCP dislocation with a small osteochondral fragment. A lateral surgic

A biomechanical study of the effects of simulated ulnar deviation on silicone finger joint implant failure.

UNLABELLED: Silicone finger arthroplasties are used widely, especially for metacarpophalangeal joint replacement in patients with inflammatory arthritis. Implant failure is well recognized. The rates of failure in vivo differ substantially from experience in vivo. One cause of failure is felt to be post-operative ulnar deviation. The aim of our study was to test the effect of ulnar deviation testing on silicone finger implants. We tested 12 implants in three groups of four implants. The implants were submerged in a bath of Ringer's solution at 370 °C throughout the experiment and tested in a r

Low level laser therapy (lllt) for chronic joint pain of the elbow, wrist and fingers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In previous studies, we successfully applied Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in patients with non-specific chronic pain of the shoulder joint and lower back. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of LLLT for chronic joint pain of the elbow, wrist, and fingers. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Nine male and 15 female patients with chronic joint pain of the elbow, wrist, or fingers, who were treated at the rehabilitation outpatient clinic at our hospital from April, 2007 to March, 2009 were enrolled in the study. We used a 1000 mW semiconductor laser device.

Structural and inflammatory sonographic findings in erosive and non-erosive osteoarthritis of the interphalangeal finger joints.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives were: (1) to determine if ultrasound (US) can detect more erosions in erosive osteoarthritis (EOA) of the interphalangeal (IP) joints than conventional radiography (CR); and (2) to explore the frequency of structural and inflammatory findings in EOA and non-EOA. METHODS: Structural changes and the anatomical phase were scored on CR in IP joints of 31 patients with EOA and 7 patients with non-EOA. Structural and inflammatory changes were scored by US. The frequency of sonographic findings was compared between the anatomical phases and between EOA and non-EOA by genera

Indian salutation test in acute dorsal carpometacarpal joint dislocation of the ulnar four fingers.

Complete dislocation of the ulnar 4 carpometacarpal joints of the hand (excluding the thumb) is an uncommon injury. Anatomic reduction of the carpometacarpal joint (CMCJ) is essential to maintain function of the hand, and this can often be accomplished by prompt closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner-wire fixation. The diagnosis is sometimes delayed or missed in the emergency department (ED), and a true lateral radiograph is mandatory in suspected cases. We present a case of dorsal unilateral dislocation of the ulnar 4 CMCJs without associated fracture. The injury was difficult to diagnos

MR imaging of the metacarpophalangeal joints of the fingers: part II. Detection of simulated injuries in cadavers.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and MR arthrography in the diagnosis of the most common traumatic metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint injuries, which were created surgically in cadavers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Injuries to various MCP joint structures were surgically created randomly in 28 fingers of seven human cadaveric hands. Injuries to the main collateral ligaments (CLs) (n = 12), accessory CL (n = 15), sagittal band (n = 14), transverse fibers of the extensor hood (n = 5), first annular pulley (n = 16), deep transverse metacarpal ligament (DTML)

[Correction of malalignment of the ring finger after Kirschner wire infection of the phalangeal-interphalangeal joint].

After a tractus-intermedius rupture of the extensor aponeurosis of the ring finger, a Kirschner wire infection developed following an initially uncomplicated course after surgical care and PIP-joint transfixation. In spite of adequate therapy, destruction of the PIP-joint subsequently developed with an ulnar dislocation of the distal ring finger. With an unicondylar corrective osteotomy it was possible to achieve a normal position and an improvement in mobility.

[Traumatic luxation of the extensor apparatus of the dorsum of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the little finger. Six cases].

Dislocation of the extensor tendon over the MP joint as a result of trauma is a rare and unrecognized injury as our six patients were only operated subsequently. The diagnosis is simple: flexion is possible, while extension is not. The patient is able to hold the extension despie resistance if the dislocation is reduced by artificial extension. X-rays eliminate any possible fracture. Six cases have revealed two different assumptions: either the two tendons (extensor digitorum communis and extensor digiti quinti proprius) are simultaneously dislocated together on the ulnar side, or they are dis

Dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joints of the long fingers. Anatomo-clinical study and therapeutic results.

The authors report an anatomo-clinic study on dislocations of the PIP joint in order to point out the lesions and the adequate treatment. This study is composed of two parts: first an anatomoclinical study of 29 dislocations all of which were operated on principle after a clinical and radiographic examination. The second part is a complementary anatomical study of 20 cadaveric joints based on an analysis of the different stabilizing structures of the joint. The study showed that, in order to get a dislocation of the PIP joint, it is necessary that two stabilizing formations be damaged. There i

Simultaneous Volar Dislocation of Distal Interphalangeal Joint and Volar Fracture-Subluxation of Proximal Interphalangeal Joint of Little Finger: A New Mechanism of Injury.

Simultaneous volar dislocation of distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint and volar fracture-subluxation of proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint of the same finger has not been reported yet. A 19-year-old man was referred due to pain on the deformed left little finger after a ball injury. Radiographs showed volar dislocation of the DIP joint and dorsal lip fracture of the middle phalanx with volar subluxation of PIP joint of the little finger. This case was unique in terms of the mechanism of injury which was hyperflexion type in two adjacent joints of the same finger. The patient was treated by cl
