Petroleum exploration has continued to impact negatively the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Oil spills from petroleum exploration contaminate both the aquatic and non- aquatic environments and destroy the ecosystem which makes people in these regions to be prone to diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disease, infertility, and sterility and also poverty. Some oxidative stress markers of the liver and muscle of fish (Clarias gariepinus) from Apata, Araromi, and Mahin rivers (located in the Niger Delta region) were compared with those of fish samples from a clean f

Co-infections can affect the transmission of a pathogen within a population and the pathogen's virulence, ultimately affecting the disease's dynamics. In addition, co-infections can potentially affect the host's immunological responses, clinical outcomes, survival, and disease control efficacy. Co-infections significantly impact fish production and can change several fish diseases' progression and severity. However, the effect of co-infection has only recently garnered limited attention in aquatic animals such as fish, and there is currently a dearth of studies on this topic. This study, there…

Periodontal disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, is caused by the interaction between pathogenic bacteria and the host immune system. The ensuing oxidative stress and inflammatory cascade result in the destruction of gingival tissue, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. This article reviews the underlying mechanisms and host-bacteria interactions responsible for periodontal disease and evidence that nutritional supplementation with fish oil may provide a protective effect. Historical investigations of diet and disease have highlighted an inverse relationship between ingestion of

Progress in prevention of chromosome aberrations is due to utilization of molecular cytogenetic diagnostic methods. The purpose of this trend of clinical cytogenetics is development and utilization of new highly effective methods for analysis of chromosome aberrations. Molecular cytogenetic methods (fluorescent in situ hybridization-FISH) are used for pre- and postnatal identification of chromosome aberrations in mentally retarded children and congenital diseases. These studies are carried out after classical cytogenetic analysis, if it proves to be of no avail. FISH diagnosis pre- and postnat

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of DNA-DNA or DNA-RNA using post-mortem brain samples is one approach to study low-level chromosomal aneuploidy and selective expression of specific genes in the brain of patients with neuropsychiatric diseases. We have performed a pilot molecular-cytogenetic analysis of post-mortem brain of schizophrenic patients. Multicolor FISH on two post-mortem brain samples of normal individuals and six schizophrenic individuals (area 10 of cortex) was applied. A set of DNA probes for FISH included: (i) centromeric alphoid DNA probes for chromosomes 7, 8, 13 and

Accumulation of a toxic agent (2-4-fold maximum allowable concentrations) was found in the fish caught in the polluted area of the water storage basin of the Angara river. The authors quantified a risk for major pathological syndromes in individuals exposed to mercury on fish ingestion and assayed biosubstrates for the substance. The integral risk of major pathological syndromes in the potentially mercury loaded persons increased by 62.1% with age and only by 17.1% in the control group. In the risk pattern there were risks for neurological diseases, arterial hypertension, coronary heart diseas

Fish lice (Argulus spp; family Argulidae) are branchiuran crustaceans that parasitize both marine and freshwater fishes. Argulus spp can be a major threat to fish health, because heavy infestations can cause significant morbidity and mortality. In addition, fish lice are known to be the vehicle for other fish diseases. During rounds at our facility, Argulus japonicus was collected from the caudal and anal fins of 3 goldfish (Carassius auratus). These goldfish were asymptomatic, and no additional cases were noted after manual removal of the lice. As soon as any Argulus organisms are identified,…

Real-time screening of surface-associated health abnormalities in fish is crucial for controlling disease outbreaks in aquaculture and mitigating the economic losses caused by fish diseases. The active movement of fish schools and the generally fine-grained characteristics of fish body surface symptoms make it challenging for conventional methods to accurately monitor fish health without causing physical harm. In this paper, we propose RT-GalaDet, a real-time detection method for abnormal fish surface health features, based on an improved RT-DETR model. By incorporating a triple design of Stat…

Tebuconazole (TBZ) is a triazole fungicide broadly used to control fungal diseases in agricultural crops, fruit-bearing plants and forestry plantations. However, its increasing use and release into aquatic environments has raised concerns about its hazardous effects on the health of fish. Thus, the aim of the present study was to review the scientific literature on the ecotoxicological effects of TBZ and TBZ-based commercial formulations on fish. Historical review data (publication year and geographical distribution), TBZ type, experimental design, fish species, habitat, life stage, tissue/org

Aquaculture plays a vital role in meeting the global demand for high-quality protein. However, the fish industry is challenged by infectious diseases, including gill conditions such as epitheliocystis. Epitheliocystis is characterized by cyst-like epithelial lesions, which occur in the gills of fish, and is associated with intracellular bacteria including Chlamydia-related bacteria. Although epitheliocystis was initially regarded as of low significance, attention is increasing due to its impact on commercially important fish species in intense farming conditions. This review evaluates the role

In recent decades, worldwide fish consumption has increased notably worldwide. Despite the health benefits of fish consumption, it also can suppose a risk because of fishborne diseases, including parasitic infections. Global changes are leading to the emergence of parasites in new locations and to the appearance of new sources of transmission. That is the case of the zoonotic protozoa Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Toxoplasma gondii; all of them reach aquatic environments and have been found in shellfish. Similarly, these protozoa can be present in other aquatic animals, such as

Neovascular retinal degenerative diseases are the leading causes of blindness in developed countries. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy is commonly used to treat these diseases currently. However, recent reports indicate that long term suppression of VEGF in the eye is associated with chorioretinal atrophy. Therefore, a physiological amount of VEGF is required for retinal homeostasis. Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is a transcriptional factor upstream of VEGF. We previously reported that HIF regulated pathological angiogenesis in the retina of murine models of oxygen-induc

Elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) are charismatic cartilaginous fish, popular in public aquaria. Almost 200 shark and ray species are listed as threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), demonstrating the importance of captive breeding and research programmes. Limited studies investigate diseases of elasmobranchs in captive and free-living environments, and among available literature neoplasia is rarely reported, with even fewer cases of lymphoid neoplasia documented. This article outlines the first reports of lymphoid neoplasia in three elasmobranch species in whic

Anisakiasis, a human infection of Anisakis L3 larvae, is one of the common foodborne parasitic diseases in Korea. Studies on the identification of anisakid larvae have been performed in the country, but most of them have been focused on morphological identification of the larvae. In this study, we analyzed the molecular characteristics of 174 Anisakis type I larvae collected from 10 species of fish caught in 3 different sea areas in Korea. PCR-RFLP and sequence analyses of rDNA ITS and mtDNA cox1 revealed that the larvae showed interesting distribution patterns depending on fish species and ge

Microplastics (MPs) pollution is a hot issue of global concern. Polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) age quickly in the marine environment and break down into smaller particles because of their relatively low temperature resistance, poor ultraviolet resistance, and poor antioxidant capacity, making them one of the major pollutants in the ocean. We assessed whether long-term exposure to micron-sized PP-MPs influences fish susceptibility to viral diseases. We found that exposure to PP-MPs (1-6 μm and 10-30 μm) at concentrations of 500 and 5000 μg/L resulted in uptake into spleen and kidney tissu

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease. Reactive oxygen species have been considered as aggravating factors for autoimmune diseases. Fatty acids had been linked in reduction of various diseases by augment of their antioxidant potential and antiinflammatory mechanisms. The aim of this study was to assess the oxidative status in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who used concentrated fish oil only or concentrated fish oil in combination with evening primrose oil in a period of 3 months. Subjects were divided into three groups. The group I consists of patients who had been taking

Bacteria from the Chlamydiales order have been long known, especially as pathogenic bacteria to humans and many animal species, principally including birds and mammals. But for slightly over 20 years, they have been identified in the aquatic environment as endosymbionts of amoebas and sea worms. For several years, they have also been recorded as a cause of diseases among fish, causing respiratory system infections in the form of epitheliocystis of the gill. At present, 11 chlamydia-like organisms pathogenic to fish have been described, including nine new ones, classified into six families, fou

Lancefield group C Streptococcus dysgalactiae (GCSD) is known as a causative agent of bovine mastitis and cardiopulmonary diseases in humans. Recently, GCSD has been isolated from diseased fish in Japan. Almost all culture supernatants and sodium dodecyl sulfate extracts obtained from GCSD isolated from farmed fish possessed serum opacity activity. Serum opacity factor (SOF) is a bifunctional cell-associated protein that causes serum opacification. In this study, a gene coding SOF, which was named sof-FD, was identified from GCSD isolated from fish. The amino acid sequence of sof-FD showed 40.

The contamination of fish with methylmercury (MeHg) could hamper the health promoting properties of fish. Currently, there is strong evidence about the health benefits of seafood consumption. When consumed by the mother before and during pregnancy it improves neurodevelopment of infants and toddlers. Thereafter it reduces the risk of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases. The benefits of fish are mainly due to its content of omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Other constituents, such as high biological value
