Infantile esotropia with cross-fixation, inability to abduct, and underlying horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis.

Children affected by infantile esotropia can cross-fixate to see object to the contralateral side with the adducted eye; when doing so they need not abduct the eye ipsilateral to the object and thus can appear to have abduction defects. Less commonly, an esotropic child is truly unable to abduct and cross-fixates to allow side gaze. We report the case of a 10-month-old girl with cross-fixation and inability to abduct who was genetically proven to have horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis (recessive ROBO3 mutations). Clinical assessment of her elder brother, previously diagnosed wit

Looking inside and beyond eye fixations in reading.

Co-registration of neural and behavioral measures is key in developing a holistic understanding of reading. However, researchers must study not only neural effects inside fixations, early enough to initiate saccade decisions, but also later effects that are linguistically driven. Furthermore, researchers must not only use co-registration to allow for naturalistic reading but also to look beyond individual fixations to examine the coupling between temporally extended neural language processing and saccade decisions. Such an approach has revealed that saccade decisions are triggered at an interm

Calibration-Free Mobile Eye-Tracking Using Corneal Imaging.

In this paper, we present and evaluate a calibration-free mobile eye-traking system. The system's mobile device consists of three cameras: an IR eye camera, an RGB eye camera, and a front-scene RGB camera. The three cameras build a reliable corneal imaging system that is used to estimate the user's point of gaze continuously and reliably. The system auto-calibrates the device unobtrusively. Since the user is not required to follow any special instructions to calibrate the system, they can simply put on the eye tracker and start moving around using it. Deep learning algorithms together with 3D

Who says you are so sick? An investigation on individual susceptibility to cybersickness triggers using EEG, EGG and ECG.

In this research paper, we conducted a study to investigate the connection between three objective measures: Electrocardio-gram(EGG), Electrogastrogram (EGG), and Electroencephalogram (EEG), and individuals' susceptibility to cybersickness. Our primary objective was to identify which of these factors plays a central role in causing discomfort when experiencing rotations along three different axes: Roll, Pitch, and Yaw. This study involved 35 participants who were tasked with destroying asteroids using their eye gaze while undergoing passive rotations in four separate sessions. The results, whe

Integration of landmark and saccade target signals in macaque frontal cortex visual responses.

Visual landmarks influence spatial cognition and behavior, but their influence on visual codes for action is poorly understood. Here, we test landmark influence on the visual response to saccade targets recorded from 312 frontal and 256 supplementary eye field neurons in rhesus macaques. Visual response fields are characterized by recording neural responses to various target-landmark combinations, and then we test against several candidate spatial models. Overall, frontal/supplementary eye fields response fields preferentially code either saccade targets (40%/40%) or landmarks (30%/4.5%) in ga

Variations in Eye-Gaze Behaviors Evident When Five Adults With Aphasia-Based Alexia Read Multisentence Passages.

PURPOSE: The problems that people with aphasia encounter when reading passages are poorly understood. This study's purpose was in-depth examination of eye-gaze behaviors exhibited by five people with aphasia-based alexia. METHOD: Five adults with aphasia-based alexia and five neurotypical adults (NAs) read paragraphs while having their eye movements recorded. Acquired data included descriptive characterization of overall eye-gaze behaviors and determination of the (a) percent of fixated words, (b) average fixation duration, (c) average initial and total summed fixation durations of processing

Why the parent's gaze is so powerful in organizing the infant's gaze: The relationship between parental referential cues and infant object looking.

Parental scaffolding such as looking at and showing objects has long been considered to be helpful for early attention and language development. However, relatively little is known about how parental social multimodal cues work alone or together in guiding an infant's attention toward the referent items. The present study aims to document the dynamics of social referential input during an interactive play session and specify the different types of social cues in directing infant attention. Forty-three parent-infant dyads (infants aged from 5.0 to 18.0 months) in the U.S. completed a short play

Eye Gaze and Perceptual Adaptation to Audiovisual Degraded Speech.

Purpose Visual cues from a speaker's face may benefit perceptual adaptation to degraded speech, but current evidence is limited. We aimed to replicate results from previous studies to establish the extent to which visual speech cues can lead to greater adaptation over time, extending existing results to a real-time adaptation paradigm (i.e., without a separate training period). A second aim was to investigate whether eye gaze patterns toward the speaker's mouth were related to better perception, hypothesizing that listeners who looked more at the speaker's mouth would show greater adaptation.

The extrafoveal preview paradigm as a measure of predictive, active sampling in visual perception.

A key feature of visual processing in humans is the use of saccadic eye movements to look around the environment. Saccades are typically used to bring relevant information, which is glimpsed with extrafoveal vision, into the high-resolution fovea for further processing. With the exception of some unusual circumstances, such as the first fixation when walking into a room, our saccades are mainly guided based on this extrafoveal preview. In contrast, the majority of experimental studies in vision science have investigated "passive" behavioral and neural responses to suddenly appearing and often

Fixation stability as a biomarker for differentiating mild traumatic brain injury from age matched controls in pediatrics.

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an increasingly significant health concern worldwide, compounded by the difficultly in detection and diagnosis. Fortunately, a growing body of research has identified oculomotor behavior, specifically fixations, saccades and smooth pursuit eye movements as a promising endophenotype for neurotrauma. To date, limited research exists using fixation stability in a comparative study to indicate the presence of a mild TBI (mTBI), especially in the pediatric population. METHODS: The present study examined data from 91 individuals clinically diagnosed with

New objects can capture attention without a unique luminance transient.

Recent evidence has suggested that new objects capture attention solely because they are typically accompanied by a unique luminance transient. In the present study, we presented a stationary pattern mask after an array of placeholders but before a subsequent search display. This allowed all of the search elements to be presented simultaneously, thereby eliminating the unique luminance transient associated with the appearance of any new objects. Under these circumstances, new objects still captured attention. In another experiment, we jiggled the mask. This caused new objects to lose their adv

The effect of poor fixation on computer-assisted topographic corneal analysis. Pseudokeratoconus.

INTRODUCTION: The effect of changing the alignment of the corneal surface in relation to the plane of the videokeratoscope mires in computer-assisted topographic corneal analysis was evaluated. METHODS: The corneas of five subjects were analyzed with the visual axis at 0 degrees, 2.5 degrees, 5 degrees, and 10 degrees below the central axis of the videokeratoscope. The relative steepness of the inferior and superior cornea was compared using inferior-superior (I-S) values at each deviation from the central axis. A similar analysis was performed on three aspheric test surfaces with different c

Oculogyric crisis after metoclopramide therapy.

Oculogyric crisis developed in a 21-year-old girl after 5 oral doses of 10 mg of metoclopramide. The symptoms were relieved by i.v. administration of diphenhydramine hydrochloride. Although ocular side effects of metoclopramide are rare, it can induce an alarming oculogyric crisis in some sensitive subjects. The mechanism of oculogyric crises is unclear but the characteristics of the condition and some known causes are discussed. Advice is given on optometric management.

[Ocular Hypotension: How the Retina Surgeon Sees the Causes and Therapeutic Options].

Ocular hypotension is a result of a lack of production or a loss of intraocular fluid. Intraocular inflammation, drugs, or proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) with overgrowth of the ciliary body can result in reduced secretion of intraocular fluid. Loss of intraocular fluid can result from external loss, such as in fistulating surgery or trauma, or internally, e.g. from cyclodialysis clefts or retinal detachment. In this review, we discuss the causal therapy of ocular hypotension: fixation of the ciliary body, removal of ciliary body membranes, surgery for PVR, choice of tamponade, possibili

Towards safer non-volatile tissue fixatives: Evaluation of choline-based ionic liquids for fixing ocular tissues.

Volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) are routinely used for processing biological tissue samples in clinical laboratories. Recognizing their serious health and environmental impacts, a few non-volatile green solvents (choline based ionic liquids, ILs) were evaluated as tissue fixatives here. Microscopic evaluation of histo-morphology, fixation and staining quality, and macromolecular integrity (DNA and proteins) were assessed in human eye tissues (sclera, choroid, retinal layers and retinal pigmented epithelium, eyelid and orbit) after IL-fixation. Formalin-fixed tissues were used as standard ref
