BACKGROUND: Research on the gut microbiota has emerged as a new direction for understanding pathophysiologic changes in diseases associated with aging, such as sarcopenia. Several studies have shown that there are differences in the gut microbiota between individuals with sarcopenia and without sarcopenia. However, these differences are not consistent across regions and ethnic groups, and additional research is needed.
METHODS: In this study, we collected fresh fecal samples from 31 Uyghur individuals with sarcopenia and 31 healthy controls. We used 16S rRNA sequencing to obtain fecal base se

Riemerella anatipestifer is an infectious pathogen that mainly affects waterfowl such as ducks and geese. Recently, it is becoming increasingly prevalent in chicken flocks in China. In this study, we isolated 12 strains of R. anatipestifer from chickens with clinical signs in Beijing and Fujian Provinces, China. Serotyping indicated five strains from Fujian Province belonged to serotype 1, two strains from Beijing belonged to serotype 10, and five strains from Fujian Province were not assigned to serotypes 1-13. All the 12 strains exhibited high rates of resistance to amikacin, gentamicin, kan

Flavobacterium columnare, which causes columnaris disease, is responsible for significant mortality in grass carp. Vaccination is a safe and effective measure to combat this disease, and this study aimed to investigate the immune protective effects of different treatments using an inactivated F. columnare vaccine. The vaccine was prepared by inactivating the bacteria with 0.05% formaldehyde at 4°C for 24 hours. The experiments involving grass carp were divided into two parts. In Experiment 1, the immune effects of two isolates, JX-01 (genomovar I) and MU-04 (genomovar II), were compared, along

The success and sustainability of Chilean aquaculture largely depends on the control of endemic and emerging pathogens, including several species of the genus Tenacibaculum. Tenacibaculum dicentrarchi and "Tenacibaculum finnmarkense" have been detected and confirmed in Chilean Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). However, no outbreaks of tenacibaculosis in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) or coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) have been reported, either in Chile or globally. The aims of this study were to determine whether the mortalities recorded for rainbow trout and coho salmon from five marine

3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) is found in cruciferous vegetables and is used to treat various inflammatory diseases because of its potential anti-inflammatory effects. To investigate effects of DIM in Riemerella anatipestifer-infected ducks which induce upregulation of inflammatory cytokines, ducks were treated orally with DIM at dose of 200 mg/kg/day and infected the following day with R. anatipestifer. Infected and DIM-treated ducks exhibited 14% increased survival rate and significantly decreased bacterial burden compared to infected untreated ducks. Next, the effect on the expression level o

The life cycle of Flavobacterium psychrophilum (Fp), the causative agent of bacterial coldwater disease (BCWD) and rainbow trout fry syndrome (RTFS), appears to involve interactions with spleen and head kidney macrophages. To develop an in vitro model for studying this, F. psychrophilum was incubated with a rainbow trout splenic monocyte/macrophage-like cell line (RTS11) and fundamental macrophage functions evaluated. The animal cell basal medium, L15, supplemented with bovine serum (FBS) supports RTS11 maintenance, and surprisingly, L15 with 2% FBS (L15/FBS) also supported F. psychrophilum gr

The aim of this study was to characterise bacteria in the genus Bergeyella isolated from the nasal passages of healthy piglets. Nasal swabs from 3 to 4 week-old piglets from eight commercial domestic pig farms and one wild boar farm were cultured under aerobic conditions. Twenty-nine Bergeyella spp. isolates were identified by partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing and 11 genotypes were discriminated by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR. Bergeyella zoohelcum and Bergeyella porcorum were identified within the 11 genotypes. Bergeyella spp. isolates exhibited resistance to seru

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica, formerly Chryseobacterium meningosepticum usually causes neonatal meningitis and is a rare cause of nosocomial meningitis in adults. E. meningoseptica is resistant to most antibiotics, and the use of inactive drugs as empirical therapy may contribute to poor outcome in many patients. Vancomycin, alone or in combination with rifampicin, has been successful in the treatment of meningitis in infants1. We present a case of E. meningoseptica meningitis in an adult who was treated initially with intravenous vancomycin and oral rifampicin, but did not respond to the tr

Microbial symbioses drive the evolutionary and functional diversification of eukaryotic clades, from single-celled protists to large invertebrates. However, our knowledge of host-associated assemblages (the "holobiont") is limited in microscopic animal phyla with a body size <1mm, due to practical challenges such as low biomass and difficult taxonomy of host species. Marine nematodes represent an ideal case study for rapidly advancing our knowledge of bacterial-animal symbioses, representing a globally abundant invertebrate group with strong links to terrestrial and model organism species with

The bacterial communities associated with microalgae are vital for the growth and health of the host, and engineering algal microbiomes can enhance the fitness of the algae. Characterization of these microbiomes mostly relies on sequencing of DNA, which can be extracted with an array of protocols that potentially impact DNA quantity and quality and thus potentially affect subsequent analyses of microbiome composition. Here, we extracted DNA from Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis suecica, and Conticribra weissflogii microbiomes using four different protocols. DNA yield and quality was greatly imp

Two Gram-negative, aerobic, motile and rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated D34-3ᵀ and BC02-3-A7ᵀ, were isolated from deep-sea sediments of the eastern Pacific Ocean. Both strains were able to grow in the presence of 1.0-10.0% (wt/v) NaCl, at pH 6-9 and at 10-37 °C. The 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons confirmed that these two isolates belonged to the genus Christiangramia of the family Flavobacteriaceae, exhibiting the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of D34-3ᵀ to Christiangramia sediminicola SM2212T (98.8%) and BC02-3-A7ᵀ to Christiangramia oceanisediminis GC03-9ᵀ (97.2%), res

A new member of the family Flavobacteriaceae (termed Hal144T) was isolated from the marine breadcrumb sponge Halichondria panicea. Sponge material was collected in 2018 at Schilksee which is located in the Kiel Fjord (Baltic Sea, Germany). Phylogenetic analysis of the full-length Hal144T 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed similarities from 94.3 to 96.6% to the nearest type strains of the genus Maribacter. The phylogenetic tree of the 16S rRNA gene sequences depicted a cluster of strain Hal144T with its closest relatives Maribacter aestuarii GY20T (96.6%) and Maribacter thermophilus HT7-2T (96.3%)

In marine ecosystems, most invertebrates possess diverse microbiomes on their external surfaces, such as those found in the pedal mucus of grazing gastropods and chitons that aids displacement on different surfaces. The microbes are then transported around and placed in contact with free-living microbial communities of micro and other macro-organisms, potentially exchanging species and homogenizing microbial composition and structure among grazer hosts. Here, we characterize the microbiota of the pedal mucus of five distantly related mollusk grazers, quantify differences in microbial community

Riemerella anatipestifer (R. anatipestifer), a pathogenic bacterium, causes systemic infection in poultry. Although antibiotics can alleviate R. anatipestifer infection, their irrational use has worsened antibiotic resistance, rendering existing drugs less effective against the growing number of multidrug-resistant strains. Treatment with compound Chinese herbal medicines (CCHMs), which show the ability to eliminate pathogens and reduce inflammation in the body, offers a promising alternative for the treatment of bacterial infections. Herein, we characterized a multidrug-resistant R. anatipest

The Chilean salmon farming industry faces major challenges from bacterial diseases, notably tenacibaculosis, which is primarily caused by Tenacibaculum maritimum and T. dicentrarchi. However, T. finnmarkense was recently identified as an emerging pathogen. This bacterium was previously described only in Norway, where two genomovars (finnmarkense and ulcerans) were reported. The present study focuses on the phenotypic and genetic characterisation of isolates recovered from salmonids in Chile to elucidate intraspecific diversity, identify the dominant genomovar, and evaluate pathogenic potential

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global health threat. This phenomenon involves the diffusion of bacteria and genes among humans, animals and the environment. In particular, the presence of third generation cephalosporin (3GC)-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in natural environments is of high concern as they are classified as critical-priority pathogens of public health importance. In this work we studied the relation among plastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems, the spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria and diffusion of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Caged plastic fra

Tenacibaculum maritimum is a major etiological agent of tenacibaculosis in marine fish and represents an increasing concern for Chilean salmon aquaculture; however, updated information on the phenotypic and molecular diversity of circulating isolates is limited. This study characterized 40 isolates recovered from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and red cusk eel (Genypterus chilensis) obtained from outbreaks between 2020 and 2024. Isolates were analyzed using biochemical and phenotypic assays, multiplex PCR targeting the O-antigen gene cluster (O-AGC), REP-PC

Riemerella anatipestifer is a pathogenic bacterium that causes duck serositis and meningitis, leading to significant harm to the duck industry. To escape from the host immune system, the meningitis-causing bacteria must survive and multiply in the bloodstream, relying on specific virulence factors such as capsules. Therefore, it is essential to study the genes involved in capsule biosynthesis in R. anatipestifer. In this study, we successfully constructed gene deletion mutants Δ3820 and Δ3830, targeting the GE296_RS03820 and GE296_RS03830 genes, respectively, using the RA-LZ01 strain as the pa
