Circadian patterns of flight activity in mosquitoes can influence pathogen transmission by regulating dispersal potential of vectors and contact rates between vectors and reservoir and/or dead-end hosts. We investigated circadian activity patterns of Culex erraticus (Dyar and Knab) at a wetland field site in central Alabama, by aspirating resting adults and questing females in the morning and evening hours, respectively. Mosquitoes were aspirated at regular time intervals to determine the time of day during which peak resting site-seeking and host-seeking activities occurred. Day-to-day variat

Carrion-frequenting blow-flies (Chrysomyia albiceps and C. marginalis) were allowed 4 days of feeding on 32P-orthophosphate-labelled blood or an impala carcass (Aepyceros melampus) in the northern Kruger National Park, South Africa. The dispersal and density of fly faecal and discard droplets were then established using a Geiger-Counter, indicating that most droplets occurred between a height of 1 and 3 m on nearby leaves and twigs. This coincides with the preferred feeding height of kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros). During a previous anthrax epizootic kudu comprised 73.15% of a total medium to

Spontaneous flight activity of Dirofilaria immitis-infected Aedes trivittatus was evaluated by using an acoustic activity system. The activity of mosquitoes infected with low numbers of filarial larvae (1-4) was similar to that of uninfected mosquitoes. However, mosquitoes infected with more than 4 larvae became more active than uninfected mosquitoes 8 days after infection. Peak flight activity (circadian) occurred at the same time in both infected and uninfected mosquitoes, but infected mosquitoes were much more active during normal periods of quiescence. Flight activity of mosquitoes infecte

We combined biochemical measurements with novel techniques for image analysis in the rat femur to characterize the location and nature of the defect in mineralization known to occur in growing animals after spaceflight. Concentrations of mineral and osteocalcin were low in the distal half of the diaphysis and concentrations of collagen were low with evidence of increased synthesis in the proximal half of the diaphysis of the flight bones. X-ray microtomography provided semiquantitative data in computer-generated sections of whole wet bone that indicated a longitudinal gradient of decreasing mi

The wing structure, kinematics, and aerodynamics of miniature insects differ drastically from those of medium- and large-sized species. However, the structural and functional features of their wing musculature that contribute to these differences remain largely unknown. We analyze flight muscle function in two species of microinsects from different orders. Both employ indirect muscles to power flight, but the ratio of sizes between the two main muscle groups differs fundamentally, and M. viggianii is characterized by a unique hypertrophy of the dorsal longitudinal muscles. In both, aerodynamic

The carpus (wrist) of birds has a complex evolutionary history, long known to involve carpal reduction and recently shown to include topological replacement of one carpal (the ulnare) by another (the pisiform)1. The pisiform plays a crucial role in stabilization of the distal wingtip during flight2, and facilitates kinematic integration that 'automates' wing motion3. The apparent absence of a pisiform in all but the earliest theropod dinosaurs led to the proposal that it was lost early in theropod evolution and regained only in birds as a key step in the origin of flight1. Here, we describe th

In recent years, the micro air vehicle (MAV) oscillations caused by thrust imbalances have received more attention. This paper proposes a dual-wing thrust balance model (DTBM) that can solve the above problem by iterating the modified rotation angle formula. The core control parameter of the DTBM model is the au angle, which refers to the angle between the wing surface and the stroke plane at the mid-stroke position during the upstroke. For each degree change in the au angle, the range of variation in the dimensionless average thrust coefficient is between 0.0225-0.0268. A thrust coefficient o

Insects have developed diverse flight actuation mechanisms, including synchronous and asynchronous musculature. Indirect actuation, used by insects with both synchronous and asynchronous musculature, transforms thorax exoskeletal deformation into wing rotation. Though thorax deformation is often attributed exclusively to muscle tension, the inertial and aerodynamic forces generated by the flapping wings may also contribute. In this study, a tethered flight experiment was used to simultaneously measure thorax deformation and the inertial/aerodynamic forces acting on the thorax generated by the

Indirect actuation of the wings via thoracic deformation is a unique mechanism widely observed in flying insect species. The physical properties of the thorax have been intensively studied in terms of their ability to efficiently generate wingbeats. The basic mechanism of indirect wing actuation is generally explained as a lever model on a cross-sectional plane, where the dorsoventral movement of the mesonotum (dorsal exoskeleton of the mesothorax) generated by contractions of indirect muscles actuates the wing. However, the model considers the mesonotum as an ideal flat plane, whereas the mes

Entomophthoralean mycoses are of general importance in the natural control of aphids, but mechanisms involved in their dissemination are poorly understood. Despite several possible means of fungal survival, the dispersal of the mycoses in aphids has never been related to the flight of their migratory alates that are able to locate suitable host plants. In this study, aphid-pathogenic fungi proved to be widely disseminated among various aphids by their alates through migratory flight based on the following findings. First, up to 36.6% of the 7139 migratory alates (including nine species of vege

The yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti forms aerial swarms that serve as mating aggregations [1]. Despite lacking the remarkable collective order of other animal ensembles, such as fish and birds [2], the kinematic properties of these swarms bear the hallmarks of local interaction and global cohesion [3,4]. However, the mechanisms responsible for collective behaviour in mosquitoes are not well understood. Mosquitoes use their antennae as hearing organs to locate and interact with one another via the frequencies of sounds generated by their beating wings [5]. Acoustic detection and recognition

Due to their complexity and diversity, animal venoms represent an extensive source of bioactive compounds such as peptides and proteins. Conventional approaches for their characterization often require large quantities of biological material. Current mass spectrometry (MS) techniques now give access to a wealth of information in a short working time frame with minute amounts of sample. Such MS approaches may now be used for the discovery of novel compounds, and once their structure has been determined they may be synthesized and tested for functional activity. Molecular mass fingerprints of ve

The role of the modulation of the pineal gland function in development of cancer is discussed in the review. An inhibition of the pineal function with pinealectomy or with the exposure to the constant light regimen stimulates mammary carcinogenesis, whereas the light deprivation inhibits the carcinogenesis. Epidemiological observations on increased risk of breast cancer in night shift workers, flight attendants, radio and telegraph operators and on decreased risk in blind women are in accordance with the results of experiments in rodents. Treatment with pineal indole hormone melatonin inhibits

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Chaihuang-Yishen formula (CHYS) is a Chinese herbal formula that has been shown clinically to effectively treat chronic kidney disease including diabetic nephropathy (DN), also known as diabetic kidney disease. Our previous animal studies showed that numerous intrarenal metabolites were associated with the development of DN. In the present work, an integrated metabolomic and lipidomic analysis was used to further examine whether CHYS could attenuate the development of DN by regulating the disordered metabolic pathways.
METHOD: Progressive diabetic kidney diseas

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged exposure to microgravity alters spinal biomechanics, increases disc herniation risk, and complicates perioperative care. With commercial and deep-space missions on the horizon, the need for in-orbit surgical capability has gained prominence as a safeguard for astronaut health.
METHODS: A narrative review of PubMed, EMBASE, and Google Scholar through November 2024 identified human, animal, and in vitro studies addressing spinal physiology, pathology, or surgical feasibility in actual or simulated microgravity. Studies unrelated to the spine or lacking English full text

Gravity, the force that structures the cosmos, also shapes human physiology. It influences skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological systems, sustaining balance, blood circulation, and functional capacity. Unlike other senses, the brain lacks a dedicated gravity-sensing region and instead relies on a distributed vestibular network, graviception, to interpret gravitational cues. On Earth, gravity-driven blood pooling in the legs triggers compensatory responses that preserve cerebral perfusion. In microgravity, these mechanisms are altered, leading to fluid shifts toward

During space flight, the immune system function of the body is disrupted due to continuous weightlessness, radiation and other factors, resulting in an increased incidence of infectious diseases in astronauts. However, the effect of space flight on the immune system at the molecular level is unknown. The aim of this study was to identify key genes and pathways of spatial environmental effects on the spleen and thymus using bioinformatics analysis of the GEO dataset. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the spleen and thymus of mice preflight and postflight were screened by comprehensive an

The carcinogenic risk from space radiation has always been a health risk issue of great concern during space exploration. In recent years, a large number of cellular and animal experiments have demonstrated that space radiation, composed of high-energy protons and heavy ions, has shown obvious carcinogenicity. However, different from radiation on Earth, space radiation has the characteristics of high energy and low dose rate. It is rich in high-atom-number and high-energy particles and, as it is combined with other space environmental factors such as microgravity and a weak magnetic field, the

BACKGROUND: Astronauts on exploration missions may be at risk for traumatic injury and medical conditions that lead to life threatening hemorrhage. Resuscitation protocols are limited by the austere conditions of spaceflight. Solutions may be found in low-resource terrestrial settings. The existing literature on alternative blood product administration and walking blood banks was evaluated for applicability to spaceflight.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A literature review was done using PubMed and Google Scholar. References were crosschecked for additional publications not identified using the in
