Hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. C677T mutation at the MTHFR gene and deficiencies of folic acid and vitamin B-12 may account for elevation of total homocysteine (tHcy). Ninety Brazilian Parkatêjê Indians (90.0% of the population without admixture, aged > or = 20 years) were studied. Hyperhomocysteinemia was observed in 26.7% of the Indians. No case of vitamin B-12 deficiency was detected. Folic acid deficiency was found in 43.3% of the subjects. Rates of mutated allele 677T and TT genotype were 40.7% and 14.0%, respectively. Prevalence of hypertension, dyslipi…

BACKGROUND: Preconception iron and folic acid supplementation (IFAS) is a key intervention to prevent neural tube defects (NTDs) and maternal and child iron deficiency anaemia (IDA). Despite its potential benefits, many healthcare systems rarely provide preconception IFAS to women who plan to become pregnant and mothers with a history of spontaneous abortion who declined contraceptive use. The aim of this study was to explore stakeholder perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for implementing preconception IFAS for these high-risk groups in the Ethiopian healthcare system, a country

BACKGROUND: Antenatal multiple micronutrient (MM) supplementation improves birth outcomes relative to iron-folic acid (IFA) in developing countries, but limited data exist on its impact on pregnancy micronutrient status.
OBJECTIVE: We assessed the efficacy of a daily MM (15 nutrients) compared with IFA supplement, each providing approximately 1 RDA of nutrients and given beginning at pregnancy ascertainment, on late pregnancy micronutrient status of women in rural Bangladesh. Secondarily, we explored other contributors to pregnancy micronutrient status.
METHODS: Within a double-masked trial

PURPOSE: The rate of neural tube defects (NTDs) in Europe has remained similar since the 1990s despite folic acid supplement recommendations (400 µg/day) for women of childbearing age. Mandatory folic acid fortification of staple foods has proved effective for reducing the prevalence of NTDs in over 80 countries. This study estimated the impact of addition of folic acid to bread or flour in the Republic of Ireland on reducing the risk of occurrence of NTD-affected pregnancies and the possible risk of masking (undiagnosed) vitamin B12 deficiency in older adults.
METHODS: Analyses were based on

BACKGROUND: Adding Drakshavaleha to iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation could lead to a significant increase in hemoglobin (Hb) levels compared to IFA alone due to its bioavailability-enhancing property. This paper presents a protocol for the randomized controlled trial (RCT) assessing the efficacy and safety of integrating Drakshavaleha with IFA supplementation in improving hemoglobin levels among women aged 18-49 years with mild to moderate iron-deficiency anaemia.
METHODS: This parallel-group, open-label, community-based randomized controlled trial will include women aged 18 to 49 years

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anaemia is the most prevalent dietary deficiency anaemia, affecting 30% of the global population. According to WHO (2019), anaemia affects 500 million women (15-49 years) globally. In India, 57.2% of women in this age group are anaemic despite the "Anaemia Mukt Bharat Programme". The main challenge with standard iron and folic acid therapy is poor compliance due to forgetfulness and gastrointestinal side effects, necessitating alternative treatments like Siddha medicines with better efficacy and tolerability.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective is to compare the effic

Folic acid, a water soluble B vitamin, plays an important role in cellular metabolic activities, such as functioning as a cofactor in one-carbon metabolism for DNA and RNA synthesis as well as nucleotide and amino acid biosynthesis in the body. A lack of dietary folic acid can lead to folic acid deficiency and result in several health problems, including macrocytic anemia, elevated plasma homocysteine, cardiovascular disease, birth defects, carcinogenesis, muscle weakness, and walking difficulty. However, the effect of folic acid deficiency on skeletal muscle development and its molecular mech…

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to evaluate the utility of serum folic acid testing in children and adolescents in a developed country without mandatory folic acid food fortification and to identify patients at risk for folic acid deficiency. In this cross-sectional study, records from primary care and hospitals were reviewed for patients aged 0-18 years who underwent serum folic acid testing. Data were retrieved from the Leumit-Health-Services database over a ten-year period (January 2008 to December 2018). Clinical and laboratory data were compared between patients with folic acid deficiency to…

Sperm DNA injury is one of the common causes of male infertility. Folic acid deficiency would increase the methylation level of the important genes, including those involved in DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair pathway. In the early stages, we analysed the correlation between seminal plasma folic acid concentration and semen parameters in 157 infertility patients and 91 sperm donor volunteers, and found that there was a significant negative correlation between seminal folic acid concentration and sperm DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI; r = -0.495, p < 0.01). Then through reduced representation …

Folic acid deficiency is common worldwide and is linked to an imbalance in gut microbiota. However, based on model animals used to study the utilization of folic acid by gut microbes, there are challenges of reproducibility and individual differences. In this study, an in vitro fecal slurry culture model of folic acid deficiency was established to investigate the effects of supplementation with 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (MTHF) and non-reduced folic acid (FA) on the modulation of gut microbiota. 16S rRNA sequencing results revealed that both FA (29.7%) and MTHF (27.9%) supplementation significan…

Folic acid, referred to as vitamin B9, is a water-soluble substance, which participates in the synthesis of nucleic acids, amino acids, and proteins. Similarly to B12 and B6, vitamin B9 is involved in the metabolism of homocysteine, which is associated with the MTHFR gene. The human body is not able to synthesize folic acid; thus, it must be supplemented with diet. The most common consequence of folic acid deficiency is anemia; however, some studies have also demonstrated the correlation between low bone mineral density, hyperhomocysteinemia, and folic acid deficiency. Patients with inflammato…

Folic acid supplementation has drawn much attention in recent years for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline. In this review, the authors describe how current evidence does not support the use of folic acid supplements to protect against cognitive decline. Although a few studies suggest that folic acid supplementation may provide neuroprotection among persons who are folate deficient, there is also data to indicate that supplementation in persons without folate deficiency may pose a risk to neurological function. Vitamin B12 deficiency is common in old age and may not be

Folic acid deficiency with the picture of a megaloblastic bone marrow may develop in haemolytic anaemia, and, on the other hand, both vitamin B(12) and folic acid deficiency may produce signs of haemolysis. As the correct interpretation of a positive antiglobulin reaction associated with megaloblastic erythropoiesis is particularly important, the effect of deficiency of vitamin B(12) and folic acid on the results of the test was investigated in 32 patients with vitamin B(12) or folic acid deficiency and a positive antiglobulin reaction was obtained in ten. There was no correlation between the …

Folic acid deficiency is a critical public health concern that affects millions worldwide, particularly women of reproductive age, infants and others. The deficiency causes severe health consequences such as neural tube defects, homocysteine imbalance and megaloblastic anemia, often associated with cobalamin deficiency. Because of coffee's global popularity, it offers a promising platform for delivering folic acid. Adding folic acid to coffee could boost its nutritional value and provide synergistic health benefits, including helping to counteract coffee-related increases in homocysteine level…

In the UK vitamin B12 deficiency occurs in approximately 20% of adults aged >65 years. This incidence is significantly higher than that among the general population. The reported incidence invariably depends on the criteria of deficiency used, and in fact estimates rise to 24% and 46% among free-living and institutionalised elderly respectively when methylmalonic acid is used as a marker of vitamin B12 status. The incidence of, and the criteria for diagnosis of, deficiency have drawn much attention recently in the wake of the implementation of folic acid fortification of flour in the USA. This

The folic acid, riboflavin, and vitamin A status of 150 individuals in a hospital for mentally retarded persons was examined. Because many of the subjects were incontinent, it was necessary to use blood samples. Folic acid deficiency was determined from plasma levels and from examination of stained peripheral blood smears for megaloblastic changes in the leucocytes. Riboflavin deficiency was determined from estimation of erythrocyte glutathione reductase and vitamin A in plasma by a colorimetric method. Twenty percent of the subjects had evidence of folic acid deficiency, 17% had evidence of r…
