The hypothetically negative influence of food on the clinical activity of seropositive rheumatoid arthritis was studied using two types of artificial elementary food. One diet was allergen free, the other allergen restricted, containing only lactoproteins and yellow dyes. Ninety four patients entered the study, which lasted 12 weeks. During the second four week period they were randomly assigned to one of the two artificial foods. Comparison between baseline and subsequent periods showed only subjective improvements. Fresh yogurt has been proposed as a milk substitute for lactase-deficient patients. We investigated the possibility that a dried, low-fat milk fermented by yogurt microorganisms would be effective. We examined serum-free carnitine (SFC) concentrations and serum acylcarnitine (SAC)/SFC ratios in 40 severely handicapped patients, aged 2 to 36 years, and 69 age-matched control subjects. SFC levels in the patients treated with valproic acid (VPA) and/or receiving carnitine-deficient elemental diets (ED) were significantly lower, and their SAC/SFC ratios were significantly higher than in the other patients or in control subjects. A controlled trial of fortification of crystalline monosodium glutamate (MSG) with 810 micrograms RE vitamin A/g was undertaken in an area of endemic vitamin A deficiency in Indonesia. Powdered MSG was used to mask the yellow color of the vitamin A. Eight different sources of low-iodine diet (LID) were tested in mice over 14 years. The available iodine in each diet was measured by isotopic equilibration. Six horses with dysphagia (attributable to botulism, glossitis, or guttural pouch mycosis) were given a commercially available liquid diet as the sole source of nutrition. Seven horses with hypophagia caused by severe bacterial pleuropneumonia or peritonitis were given the liquid diet to supplement food consumed voluntarily. Coffee is one of the first liquids given to infants in Guatemala. To evaluate whether this practice has an adverse effect on iron status, 160 children 12-24 mo of age who had received coffee for > or = 2 mo and had at least one indicator of iron deficiency were stratified by initial hemoglobin concentration (anemic, or nonanemic, ie, hemoglobin > or = 105 g/L) and randomly assigned to a control (continuation of coffee; coffee) or intervention (provided with a substitute consisting of sugar and coloring; substitute) group for 5 mo.
