Is Child Food Insecurity Underreported? Evidence From Daily, Monthly, and Nine-Month Measures.

OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study examines how consistently parents report their own and their children's food insecurity across daily, mont … all intervals may offer more accurate insights. Because these measures motivate and inform national food assistance policy, improving how we assess child food insecurity is critical. Future research with larger samples is needed to validate and extend these findings.

Parent and Child Reports of Food Insecurity and Mental Health: Divergent Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity-the inability to provide adequate food for at least one household member sometime during the year-is linked to n … ive effects of food insecurity on children in their household, particularly in households receiving food assistance, perhaps because of objectively greater need. Because food insecurity may have profound effects on child development, pediatricians should be aware of the mental health risks for children in food-insecure homes.

Cluster of two cases of botulism due to Clostridium baratii type F in France, November 2014.

The first two cases in France of botulism due to Clostridium baratii type F were identified in November 2014, in the same family. Both cases required prolonged respiratory assistance. One of the cases had extremely high toxin serum levels and remained paralysed for two weeks. Investigations strongly supported the hypothesis of a common exposure during a family meal with high level contamination of the source. However, all analyses of leftover food remained negative.

Dehisced clean wound: resuture it or Steri-strip it?

A cluster of three cases of food-borne botulism due to Clostridium baratii type F occurred in France in August 2015. All cases required respiratory assistance. Consumption of a Bolognese sauce at the same restaurant was the likely source of contamination. Clostridium baratii was isolated both from stool specimens from the three patients and ground meat used to prepare the sauce. This is the second episode reported in France caused by this rare pathogen.

SNAP Participation as a Moderator of Food and Nutrition Security and Combined Cardiometabolic Conditions: A Mixed Regression Approach.

Objectives: To examine the relationships between food security, nutrition security, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation, and cardiometabolic outcomes, including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or diabetes, among low-income U.S. individuals. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 486 participants (April-June 2021) assessed food and nutrition security and cardiometabolic outcomes. Mixed-effects logistic regression models adjusted for covariates and included a random effect for state of residence. Moderation analyses evaluated SNAP participation's impact. Results: Very low

Termination of SNAP Emergency Allotments increased food insufficiency among older adults.

OBJECTIVES: We examined how the nationwide termination of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Emergency Allotments (EA) affected food insufficiency among older adults aged 60 and older, a group with high rates of nutrition-sensitive disease conditions and low SNAP uptake. METHODS: Using Household Pulse Survey data on older adult households with incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty level, we applied a stacked difference-in-differences design to compare food insufficiency within three-month windows before and after EA termination. RESULTS: Food insufficiency rose by 1.

The heterogeneous effect of short-term transfers for improving ART adherence among HIV-infected Tanzanian adults.

A recently concluded randomized study in Tanzania found that short-term conditional cash and food transfers significantly improved HIV-infected patients’ possession of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and reduced patient loss to follow-up (LTFU) (McCoy, S. I., Njau, P. F., Fahey, C., Kapologwe, N., Kadiyala, S., Jewell, N. P., & Padian, N. S. (2017). Impacts of SNAP benefit increases on US child food insufficiency during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic reversed a decade of progress in reducing child food insufficiency in the United States. Congress implemented a universal 15% increase in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from January 2021 through September 2021 to address rising child food hardship. METHODS: We conducted a difference-in-differences analysis using US Census Bureau data to evaluate the impact of this temporary expansion on child food insufficiency. We compared 9776 SNAP participating households with 18 961 eligible non-participating households, examining changes before

A Deletion in the Canine POMC Gene Is Associated with Weight and Appetite in Obesity-Prone Labrador Retriever Dogs.

Sequencing of candidate genes for obesity in Labrador retriever dogs identified a 14 bp deletion in pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) with an allele frequency of 12%. The deletion disrupts the β-MSH and β-endorphin coding sequences and is associated with body weight (per allele effect of 0.33 SD), adiposity, and greater food motivation. Among other dog breeds, the deletion was only found in the closely related flat-coat retriever (FCR), where it is similarly associated with body weight and food motivation. The mutation is significantly more common in Labrador retrievers selected to become assistance

Can we negotiate dignity with a plate of food? The intersections of food, homelessness, and Dussel's philosophy.

This essay draws on a qualitative study that explored the understandings of employees responsible for planning, preparing, and distributing meals in three food assistance services in downtown São Paulo (Brazil) regarding food provision for people experiencing homelessness. In that study, 12 semi-structured interviews and materials from in-depth fieldwork conducted between December 2022 and December 2023 were analyzed using thematic content analysis. We revisited the previously identified themes through the lens of Enrique Dussel's Philosophy of Liberation, particularly the concepts of Totality…

Hungry for connection: associations between social isolation, mental health, and food insecurity in regional Australian adults.

Food insecurity is increasingly recognized as a public health issue with social and psychological dimensions. However, evidence on its association with mental health and social isolation in regional Australia remains limited. A cross-sectional online survey among adults (≥18 years) living in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions of Australia assessed food insecurity using the 18-item USDA Household Food Security Survey Module, categorized into 'food secure' (score = 0) or 'food insecure' (score = 1+).
