The role of food security in increasing adolescent girls' agency towards sexual risk taking: qualitative findings from an income generating agricultural intervention in southwestern Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is an important underlying driver of HIV risk and vulnerability among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. In this region, adolescents account for 80% of all new HIV infections. The primary purpose of this analysis is to understand perceived mechanisms for how a multisectoral agricultural intervention influenced sexual risk taking among HIV-affected adolescents in southwestern Kenya. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured, individual interviews with 34 adolescent-caregiver dyads who were participants in Adolescent Shamba Maisha (NCT03741634), a sub-study of adolescent

[Evaluation of public policies to promote food security and the fight against hunger, 1995-2002. 3--the Brazilian National Program to Control Vitamin A Deficiency].

Vitamin A supplements have been distributed during National Immunization Days since 1983, and Brazil has been a pioneer in this kind of strategy. The current study evaluated the National Program from 1995 to 2002, from a structure-process-results perspective. The methodology involved document research, interviews with health services managers, and a case study in 44 municipalities in Bahia State, resulting in 1,344 household interviews. In relation to structure, from 1998 on the program operated without a normative instrument due to the extinction of the National Institute of Nutrition. Improv

A geospatial hybrid platform to support public policy-making and monitoring for community-based food management and security in the context of global climate change: A study protocol.

In Latin America, Food and Nutritional Insecurity (FNI) is a challenge, particularly in households that receive social assistance programs, where food scarcity affects up to 50% of these households. Environmental degradation and climate change are significant contributors to FNI, underscoring the importance of ongoing monitoring. In this paper, we present the roadmap for a higher-impact project to support Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) policymaking in Latin America. The ultimate goal is to improve FNS in communities affected by climate change through the development of an interactive platfo

Supporting healthy weight in times of crisis: results of a one-year community health worker-led intervention among food (in)secure low-income Latinas.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a major health crisis, one that left the US healthcare system overburdened and with persisting health disparities between certain groups. A group that was and remains disproportionately affected is low-income Latino women (Latinas), especially those with food insecurity. Community health worker (CHW)-led interventions have been successful at improving the results of interventions among disadvantaged populations but their efficacy during times of crisis is not clear. Our purpose was to assess the one-year effects of an intervention for low-income ov

[Moving towards healthy and sustainable eating in educational establishments: Royal Decree 315/2025, of 15 April, establishing rules for the development of Law 17/2011, of 5 July, on food security and nutrition].

Childhood obesity is a persistent Public Health problem in Spain, with high prevalence rates and marked socioeconomic inequalities. The school environment is a strategic space for encouraging healthy and sustainable eating habits and promoting equity. Royal Decree 315/2025 is examined as an instrument for promoting this change. The standard was developed through a participatory and regulated process, including intensive interministerial coordination. It was based on key references, such as the 2010 Consensus Document and Program 16 of the PNCOCA. Different impacts were evaluated to ensure cons

Evidence that rodent control strategies ought to be improved to enhance food security and reduce the risk of rodent-borne illnesses within subsistence farming villages in the plague-endemic West Nile region, Uganda.

Rodents pose serious threats to human health and economics, particularly in developing countries where the animals play a dual role as pests: they are reservoirs of human pathogens, and they inflict damage levels to stored products sufficient to cause food shortages. To assess the magnitude of the damage caused by rodents to crops, their level of contact with humans, and to better understand current food storage and rodent control practices, we conducted a survey of 37 households from 17 subsistence farming villages within the West Nile region of Uganda. Our survey revealed that rodents cause

Decoupling food insecurity from shocks: A global analysis of food system resilience.

Food systems worldwide are increasingly exposed to climate extremes, conflicts, pandemics, and economic shocks, raising concerns about their capacity to safeguard food security and nutrition. Although resilience is now central in global policy debates, empirical evidence on what enables national food systems to withstand shocks remains limited. Here, we analyze a unique multi-country dataset integrating measures of shock severity, governance, economic conditions, social capitals, and food-system characteristics. Using a causal resilience-as-capacity framework and a series of hybrid econometric…

When Access Is Not Enough: The Role of Utilization Barriers in Nutrition Security and Cardiometabolic Risk.

Background: Food and nutrition security are key social determinants of cardiometabolic health. While food security reflects access to sufficient food, nutrition security incorporates the quality, consistency, and usability of food that supports long-term health. However, few studies have examined how household-level barriers to food utilization shape these relationships. Objective: This study assessed whether tangible (e.g., equipment, storage) and intangible (e.g., time, knowledge) food utilization barriers modify the associations between food and nutrition security and cardiometabolic outcom…

Association of Food Insecurity with Reduced History of U.S. Cancer Screening Rates.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) influence cancer prevention and outcomes. Among SDOH, economic stability-including food insecurity, income, employment, and housing stability-has a major impact on health. However, data linking food security status with cancer screening completion remain limited. We examined whether lower food security status was associated with lower completion of colorectal, breast, cervical, and prostate cancer screening. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the 2018-2023 National Health Interview Survey. Analyses were limited to cancer-specific…

Food insecurity, social isolation, and intrinsic capacity: An age-stratified analysis of US adults.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association between household food security and social isolation among US adults and differences by age. To evaluate their joint impact on health, we examined whether both experiences are independently associated with less healthy functioning across intrinsic capacity (IC) domains, and whether social isolation modifies the food security-IC relationships. METHODS: Data were from 14,570 non-institutionalized adults ≥20 years from the 2007 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Food security was measured using the US Household Food Security…
