The neuropathic foot is a common complication of diabetes mellitus and is associated with development of chronic ulcers and Charcot joints. Treatment of these complications presents a complex management task. This report presents long-term follow-up data on 16 patients with neuropathic changes who were treated with a total contact, laminated, bivalved, rocker-bottom-soled ankle-foot orthosis (TCAFO). Of the 16 patients, 6 were treated for Charcot changes only, 10 were treated for ulcers, and 2 of the 10 had ulcers bilaterally. Eight of the 12 ulcers (67%) healed in an average of 10 months (ran…

Wearing high heels is thought to lead to various foot disorders and injuries such as metatarsal pain, Achilles tendon tension, plantar fasciitis and Haglund malformation. However, there is little available information explaining the specific mechanisms and reasons why wearing high heels causes foot deformity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the foot kinematics of high heel wearers and compare any differences with barefoot individuals using the Oxford Foot Model (OFM). Fifteen healthy women aged 20-25 years were measured while walking barefoot and when wearing high heels…

BACKGROUND: Foot deformities are common in cerebral palsy (CP) and are likely caused by a disturbed interplay of forces in the foot. Evaluation of foot joint moments would therefore be highly relevant. However, kinetic foot models have not previously been applied to children with CP.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the difference in multi-segment foot joint moments between children with CP with foot deformities and children with typically developing (TD) feet?
METHODS: Children with spastic paresis were retrospectively included and compared to TD children. All children underwent clinical gait ana…

BACKGROUND: The foot plays an important role in supporting the body when undertaking weight-bearing activities. Aging is associated with an increased prevalence of foot pain and a lowering of the arch of the foot, both of which may impair mobility.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of foot pain, foot posture and dynamic foot function with self-reported mobility limitations in community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS: Foot examinations were conducted on 1,860 members of the Framingham Study in 2002-2005. Foot posture was categorized as normal, planus or cavus using static pressure measur…

This study compared muscle strength and foot pressure among patients with metatarsalgia, patients with plantar fasciitis, and healthy controls. A total of 31 patients with foot pain (14 metatarsalgia and 17 plantar fasciitis) and 29 healthy controls participated in the study. The strengths of the plantar flexor and hip muscles were measured using isokinetic and handheld dynamometers, respectively. Foot pressure parameters, including the pressure-time integral (PTI) and foot arch index (AI), were assessed using pedobarography. Compared with the healthy control group, plantar flexor strength was…

BACKGROUND: Previous reliability studies on peak plantar pressure measurements in patients with previous diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) did not stratify their analyses according to whether the foot had a previous ulcer.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Does test-retest reliability of peak foot pressure measurements from the various foot regions differ between the ulcerated and non-ulcerated feet?
METHODS: Data from 23 participants with peripheral neuropathy and healed plantar DFU were analysed in this test-retest reliability comparison study. Plantar pressure was evaluated on two sessions using Pedar®-X i…

Researchers performed foot baths and massages for residual schizophrenia patients to gauge the effects on psychiatric symptoms. Subjects were six residual schizophrenia patients hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital. Three times a week for 4weeks, they received an 8-minute effleurage massage to their legs after a 10-minute foot bath. The effect of physiological relaxation was identified by a significant decline in heart rate in all cases. The results of the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale are as follows: a mean score of 29.0 was measured before treatment, which lowered to 21.5 after treat…

Orthopedic insole was important for partial foot amputation (PFA) to achieve foot balance and avoid foot deformity. The inapposite insole orthosis was thought to be one of the risk factors of reamputation for foot valgus patient, but biomechanical effects of internal tissues on valgus foot had not been clearly addressed. In this study, plantar pressure on heel and metatarsal regions of PFA was measured using F-Scan. The three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of partial foot evaluated different medial wedge angles (MWAs) (0.0°-10.0°) of orthopedic insole on valgus foot. The effect of ortho…

BACKGROUND: Differences in foot structure are thought to be associated with differences in foot function during movement. Many foot pathologies are of a biomechanical nature and often associated with foot type. Fundamental to the understanding of foot pathomechanics is the question: do different foot types have distinctly different structure and function?
AIM: To determine if objective measures of foot structure and function differ between planus, rectus and cavus foot types in asymptomatic individuals.
METHODS: Sixty-one asymptomatic healthy adults between 18 and 77 years old, that had the …

There has been a controversy as to whether or not the non-pathological flat foot and high-arched foot have an effect on human walking activities. The 3D foot scanning system was employed to obtain static footprints from subjects adopting a half-weight-bearing stance. Based upon their footprints, the subjects were divided into two groups: the flat-footed and the high-arched. The plantar pressure measurement system was used to measure and record the subjects' successive natural gaits. Two indices were proposed: distribution of vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) of plantar and the rate of chan…

A foot avulsion case, with the dismembered body part submerged in sea water for 1 hour, is presented. This report is unique in that it is the first to document the reattachment of a body part that had been submerged in sea water. It was not known how salt-water exposure would affect wound management. Differences in osmolarity and bacterial flora between the sea water and foot tissues have not caused any problems, and the patient has not suffered any vascular or infectious complications after replantation. Neurotization of the plantar surface by the tibial nerve, which was stripped off during a…
