Pulmonary function tests and diaphragmatic compound muscle action potential in patients with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory failure is the primary cause of death in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Diaphragmatic compound muscle action potentials (DCMAP) are valid parameters to assess the respiratory muscle innervation. AIM: In this study we propose to establish evidence of pulmonary dysfunction in patients with ALS and its relation to DCMAP parameters among patients with sporadic ALS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty nine patients (M-20, F-9) diagnosed to have sporadic ALS by El. Escorial criteria, without symptoms of pulmonary dysfunction, and able to perform the PFT satisf

Modeling a rotator cuff tear: Individualized shoulder muscle forces influence glenohumeral joint contact force predictions.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears in older individuals may result in decreased muscle forces and changes to force distribution across the glenohumeral joint. Reduced muscle forces may impact functional task performance, altering glenohumeral joint contact forces, potentially contributing to instability or joint damage risk. Our objective was to evaluate the influence of rotator cuff muscle force distribution on glenohumeral joint contact force during functional pull and axilla wash tasks using individualized computational models. METHODS: Fourteen older individuals (age 63.4 yrs. (SD 1.8)) were

Highly Sensitive Iontronic-Based Aquatic Triaxis Force Sensor with Hybrid Microstructures for Delicate Force Sensing in Underwater Robots.

Reliable robotic manipulation in aquatic environments requires flexible triaxis force sensors capable of precise contact force detection, while well-sealed force sensors generally suffer from high hydrostatic pressure preloading that occupies the sensing range and compromises the sensitivity. Herein, we develop a novel and highly sensitive iontronic-based aquatic triaxis force sensor. It features an open-architecture design to compensate for hydraulic pressure changes caused by water depth. Additionally, it incorporates hybrid sensitive microstructures with distinct elastic moduli to improve s

The effect of local anaesthetics on strophanthidin toxicity in canine cardiac Purkinje fibres.

1. Canine Purkinje fibres were superfused in vitro and the electrical and mechanical effects of the local anaesthetics benzocaine and procaine were studied in the absence and in the presence of other agents.2. Both benzocaine (1 x 10(-4)-5 x 10(-4)m) and procaine (6 x 10(-5)-2.5 x 10(-4)m) decreased slightly the amplitude of the upstroke and markedly the duration of the action potential. The plateau was shifted to more negative values and the force of contraction was decreased. These effects were dose-dependent.3. The local anaesthetics abolished the spontaneous activity induced by strophanthi

Intelligibility and nonspeech orofacial strength and force control following traumatic brain injury.

Objective measures of nonspeech orofacial strength and force control were obtained for 20 individuals with traumatic brain injury. The dynamic and static force generating abilities of the upper lip, lower lip, tongue, and jaw were assessed. Based on sentence intelligibility scores, the subjects were divided into two groups, more and less intelligible. Force measures included reaction time, slope, derivative, peak overshoot, and first- and second-half mean hold and standard deviation. Groups differed only in the ability to sustain the 2 N force level with the tongue. Other potential contributor

A novel nonsurgical treatment for pincer nail that involves mechanical force control.

We hypothesize that nails have an automatic curvature feature and that their flat shape is maintained by the daily upward mechanical forces from the finger/toe pad. Thus, nail deformities, such as pincer nail, spoon nail, and koilonychias, may be caused by an imbalance between these forces and can be treated by controlling these forces. Here, we report the case of a 55-year-old man whose severe pincer nail was effectively treated by thinning the nail, which reduced the automatic curvature force. This is the first report to show that pincer nail can be treated by a nonsurgical method that reduc

Erb's palsy causation: iatrogenic or resulting from labor forces?

To determine whether there is direct evidence that Erb's palsy is caused by clinician-applied excessive lateral traction on the fetal head and neck, a literature review was performed. Both the medical literature outlining the maternal forces generated from uterine contractions and maternal pushing and limited reports on clinician-applied forces were examined. Research involving clinician-applied force measurements during actual deliveries has the potential for increasing our understanding of the mechanism of the injury. However, studies to date have involved only 29 deliveries and did not incl

Ultrasound-guided gluteal nerves electrical stimulation to enhance strength and power in individuals with chronic knee pain: a randomized controlled pilot trial.

INTRODUCTION: Various pathophysiological contexts can be accompanied by weakness, arthrogenic muscle inhibition, and even disability. In this scenario, peripheral nerve stimulation has been studied not only for pain management but also for the improvement of neuromuscular parameters. For this purpose, the use of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) has typically been investigated, but recently, the use of ultrasound-guided percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation (pPNS) has gained popularity. In this regard, electrical stimulation has a predisposition to activate Type II muscle

IonPad adhesive gripper with variable-stiffness endoskeleton.

In this study, we develop an innovative adhesion gripper capable of handling plate-like objects with various thicknesses without causing damage. The gripper combines an adhesion pad utilizing intermolecular forces and a variable-stiffness endoskeleton, allowing for precise adjustment of the pressing force during contact and the adhesion force while gripping an object. Central to its design is the fluid-driven and origami-structured endoskeleton that regulates contact and adhesion forces by controlling the fluid temperature. Furthermore, the gripper includes an outer frame which can be used for

Unravelling the Complexities of Bite Force Determinants in Paediatric Patients: A Literature Review.

The amount of maximum voluntary bite force (MVBF) is determined by the combined action of the jaw elevator muscles, which are altered jaw biomechanics and reflex processes. Bite force (BF) measurements can yield valuable information on the activity and function of the jaw muscles. The accuracy of biting force measurements depends on several variables, including age, gender, malocclusion, dental caries, dental prostheses and temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This information is essential for evaluating the development and function of the masticatory system, identifying potential abnormalities or i

Sclera Force Control in Robot-assisted Eye Surgery: Adaptive Force Control vs. Auditory Feedback.

Surgeon hand tremor limits human capability during microsurgical procedures such as those that treat the eye. In contrast, elimination of hand tremor through the introduction of microsurgical robots diminishes the surgeons tactile perception of useful and familiar tool-to-sclera forces. While the large mass and inertia of eye surgical robot prevents surgeon microtremor, loss of perception of small scleral forces may put the sclera at risk of injury. In this paper, we have applied and compared two different methods to assure the safety of sclera tissue during robot-assisted eye surgery. In the

Effects of carpal tunnel syndrome on adaptation of multi-digit forces to object texture.

OBJECTIVE: The ability to adapt digit forces to object properties requires both anticipatory and feedback-driven control mechanisms which can be disrupted in individuals with a compromised sensorimotor system. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a median nerve compression neuropathy affecting sensory and motor function in a subset of digits in the hand. Our objective was to examine how CTS patients coordinate anticipatory and feedback-driven control for multi-digit grip force adaptation. METHODS: We asked CTS patients and healthy controls to grasp, lift, and hold an object with different textures

Spontaneous and agonist-induced contractions and endothelium-dependent relaxation in aortae from SHRSP and WKY rats under various levels of passive force.

1. The influence of the passive force on the contraction and endothelium-dependent relaxation in aortae of normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) were compared. 2. Force changes of endothelium-intact and -removed preparations were measured isometrically by a force-displacement transducer. Endothelium-dependent relaxation was observed by applying acetylcholine to the preparation precontracted in the presence of 5 x 10(-7) mol/L noradrenaline. 3. The preparations showed spontaneously developed tension (tone) that increased with the increase

Fast evaluation of unbiased atomic forces in ab initio variational Monte Carlo via the Lagrangian technique.

Ab initio quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods are state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations based on highly parallelizable stochastic frameworks for accurate solutions of the many-body Schrödinger equation, suitable for modern many-core supercomputer architectures. Despite its potential, one of the major drawbacks that still hinders QMC applications, especially when targeting dynamical properties of large systems or extensive datasets, is the lack of an affordable method to compute atomic forces that are consistent with the corresponding potential energy surfaces (PESs), also known as u

Gene Transfer of Skeletal Muscle-Type Myosin Light Chain Kinase via Adeno-Associated Virus 6 Improves Muscle Functions in an Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Mouse Model.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that shows progressive muscle weakness. A few treatments exist including symptomatic therapies, which can prolong survival or reduce a symptom; however, no fundamental therapies have been found. As a therapeutic strategy, enhancing muscle force is important for patients' quality of life. In this study, we focused on skeletal muscle-specific myosin regulatory light chain kinase (skMLCK), which potentially enhances muscle contraction, as overexpression of skMLCK was thought to improve muscle function. The adeno-associated virus s

HELLS Reduction Contributes to Compressive Force-Induced Functional Changes in PDLSCs.

Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is driven by force-induced alveolar bone remodeling, yet the molecular mechanisms by which periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) sense and transduce mechanical signals remain incompletely understood. Here, we identify the epigenetic regulator HELLS as a compressive force-responsive gene and investigate its role as a mechanosensitive mediator in human PDLSCs (hPDLSCs). Compressive force downregulated HELLS expression both in vitro and in a mouse OTM model. Functionally, siRNA-mediated HELLS knockdown impaired osteogenic differentiation, as evidenced by reduce

Using climbing to quantify motor asymmetry in children with cerebral palsy: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Adapted sports complement traditional rehabilitation for children with cerebral palsy (CP), who require continuous intervention to maintain motor function. This pilot study investigates the feasibility of using a climbing game combined with force sensors to quantify motor asymmetries in children with hemiplegic CP. METHODS: Eight children with hemiplegic CP participated in climbing games for three consecutive days. Force sensors embedded in the holds measured reaction forces, while marker-less motion capture linked these forces to specific limbs. Two indices, maximum force ( F m

ILIOTIBIAL BAND SYNDROME IN CYCLING: A COMBINED EXPERIMENTAL-SIMULATION APPROACH FOR ASSESSING THE EFFECT OF SADDLE SETBACK.

BACKGROUND: Despite abundant literature, the treatment of iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) in cyclists remains complicated as it lacks evidence-based recommendations. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop a musculoskeletal modelling approach that investigates three potential biomechanical determinants of ITBS (strain, strain rate and compression force) and to use this approach to investigate the effect of saddle setback. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: An existing 3D lower-body musculoskeletal model was adapted to cycling and to the computation of three putative pathomechanisms res

Passive Force-Feedback Gloves With Joint-Based Variable Impedance Using Layer Jamming.

Force feedback gloves have a great potential in enhancing the fidelity of virtual reality and teleoperation systems. It is a challenge to develop multifinger and lightweight force feedback gloves. In this paper, we propose a solution using layer jamming sheet (LJS) on each finger joint. In simulating free space, the LJS is soft and easy to deform, which allows the finger joints to move freely with a small resistance force. In simulating constrained space, the LJS becomes stiff, which provides resistance torques to prevent the rotation of finger joints. Possible solutions for mounting the LJS o
