Search and retrieval of a radiolucent foreign object.

Successful percutaneous removal of an intravascular foreign body requires precise localization of the object so that retrieval devices can be properly positioned. Here we report the successful search for and retrieval of a catheter embolus lost in the ascending aorta during PTCA whose localization was complicated because it was radiolucent.

The case of the disappearing and reappearing intraocular lens.

A 75-year-old woman who underwent implantation of an anterior-chamber intraocular lens was noted to have the lens disappear from the anterior chamber four days after surgery and reappear on the eleventh postoperative day. Ultrasound documented the position of the lens as apparently lying posterior to the sclera and anterior to the ciliary body. Extrusion through a cyclodialysis cleft superonasally was the apparent mechanism of exit and reentry. Pseudophakic dislocation is becoming increasingly common.

Aspiration of a tracheostomy plug.

A plastic truncated conical tracheostomy plug passed down the outer cannula of a Jackson tracheostomy tube and into the lungs of a respirator-dependent man during the monthly change of the inner cannula. Despite repeated flexible and rigid bronchoscopic visualization, attempts at dislodgement were unsuccessful. An exploratory thoracotomy was also unsuccessful in recovering the plug. Seventeen days postaspiration, with percussion and postural drainage, the patient expectorated the plug, even in the absence of the cough reflex. Such plugs have now been modified by passing a ring through the hole

Retrograde venous bullet embolization: a rare occurrence.

We report a patient who sustained a single gunshot wound in the left supraclavicular fossa followed by retrograde venous bullet embolization from the left subclavian or innominate veins to a tributary of the right popliteal vein. We briefly discuss the clinical importance of this occurrence and emphasize the value of venography in the diagnosis of this rare form of missile migration.

Intracolonic migration of a pacemaker generator.

Following pacemaker implantation, a 75-year-old male developed a low grade infection of the generator pocket. Utilizing the same generator, several relocations of the generator were made with the result that eventually the pacemaker, eroding the muscular planes, found his way into the ascending colon. Healing could be achieved only after removing the whole pacemaker system. The authors' current policy in case of pacemaker infection is also reported.

Final destination of an ingested needle: the liver.

Foreign body ingestion is a common problem in children, but it is also seen among adults. Most foreign bodies pass through the gastrointestinal tract without causing complications. Perforation of the gut by a foreign body, followed by migration of the foreign body to the liver is quite rare. Herein we report a case of inadvertent ingestion of a sewing needle that perforated the duodenum and migrated to the liver. The patient was monitored weekly with abdominal radiographs, but displacement of the needle could not be observed. At follow-up, right upper quadrant pain was noted. Two weeks later,

Migration of surgical sponge retained at mediastinoscopy into the trachea.

It is uncommon to find an iatrogenic foreign body after thoracic surgery. We present a case of migration of a surgical sponge left inadvertently in the mediastinum during a troublesome mediastinoscopy, that migrated into the trachea 6 years later with airway obstruction. The foreign body was extracted through rigid bronchoscopy and the patient had a full recovery.

An Unusual Cause of Cervical Radicular Pain-Foreign Body in Esophagus.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign bodies in the esophagus are considered to be a life-threatening condition in adults and children because of esophageal perforation, chemical pneumonitis, airway obstruction, and development of a fistula, leading to high morbidity and mortality with this condition. Most cases present with immediate symptoms. However, in rare cases, the foreign body can migrate within the tissues and become symptomatic at a later date. CASE REPORT: We report a rare case of a foreign body in the esophagus following fishmeal ingestion. The foreign body had traversed the lumen of the esophagu

Disappearing intraesophageal foreign body: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body ingestion is a common emergency in clinical practice. While the majority of cases are resolved following successful removal, rare and unexpected complications can arise, such as the spontaneous displacement of a foreign body during the procedure. This report describes a unique case where a foreign body initially lodged in the esophagus was dropped during the procedure, leading to aspiration and migration to the airway. CASE SUMMARY: A 69-year-old Chinese woman presented with a 6-hour history of throat pain and tightness after consuming rabbit meat. She had no fever or

Metallic foreign bodies of brain ventricles.

UNLABELLED: Head injuries are often associated with intracranial foreign bodies that require decision making on the need for certain surgical treatment. Intraventricular foreign bodies are rare, so the question of surgical tactics is still open. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the experience of treating the wounded with intraventricular foreign bodies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Treatment outcomes in victims with foreign bodies in lateral ventricles are presented. Searching in the e-Library, PubMed, Google Scholar databases included the following keywords: «penetrating wounds», «foreign bodies», «cerebra

Thoracoscopic retrieval of a rare migrated fish bone in the thorax: a case report with sequential CT evidence and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal foreign bodies represent a common clinical emergency. Sharp foreign bodies, such as fish bones, carry a risk of esophageal perforation and subsequent severe complications. Extraluminal migration into the thoracic cavity is an uncommon but clinically significant occurrence. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old male presented with a 6-hour history of fish bone ingestion. Initial chest computed tomography (CT) demonstrated an esophageal foreign body with associated perforation; however, rigid esophagoscopy was unsuccessful in localizing the object. Follow-up contrast-enhanced C

Internal drainage of retropharyngeal abscess secondary to esophageal foreign bodies: a case series.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Foreign body oesophagus is a commonly seen emergency in ENT. It is seen both in children and adults. When sharp bony foreign bodies such as chicken, fish, and mutton bone gets impacted in the oesophagus, it predisposes the patient to various complications. The foreign body can migrate extraluminally with time and cause retropharyngeal abscess. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study over a period of 6 months from November 2019 to April 2020 of patients with foreign body oesophagus. We came across 20 patients with oesophageal foreign bodies and five of them had

Migration of a swallowed toothpick into the liver: the value of multiplanar CT.

Foreign body ingestion is not an uncommon problem encountered in clinical practice. However, the associated complication of bowel perforation and migration of the foreign body to the liver is rare. We report two cases of hepatic foreign bodies identified intra-operatively as toothpicks, with the alimentary tract being the presumed origin.

What Happens When the Digested Screw Does Not Come Out of Ileum?

Adults with foreign body ingestion are mainly secondary to psychiatric disorders, alcoholic intoxication, and secondary gains. Conservative management without any intervention is successful in 80% of the ingested foreign bodies. Risk factors for complication include sharp objects, objects larger than 6 mm, recurrent ingestion, and previous gastrointestinal tract surgeries. Sharp objects specifically account for 35% perforation rates and impactions, most commonly at the ileocecal valve. There is limited evidence on the role of colonoscopy after the distal migration of foreign bodies into the il

Acute obstructive cholangitis due to fishbone in the common bile duct: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Choledocholithiasis is an endemic condition in the world. Although rare, foreign body migration with biliary complications needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with typical symptoms even many years after cholecystectomy, EPCP, war-wound, foreign body ingestion or any other particular history before. It is of great clinical value as the present review may offer some help when dealing with choledocholithiasis caused by foreign bodies. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a case of choledocholithiasis caused by fishbone from choledochoduodenal anasto
