A Possible Mechanism of Laryngohyoid Fractures in Hanging: A Preliminary Observation.

Fractures of the hyoid bone, particularly the greater horns, and thyroid cartilage (superior horns) are known to be associated with hanging deaths. Depending on the literature, the frequency of these fractures varies from 0% to 83%. The mechanism underlying these fractures is believed to be direct compression or indirect traction from the ligature. The relationship of these structures with the cervical spine cannot be visualized with traditional internal examination, due to obstruction by surrounding soft tissue. Postmortem computed tomography scan offers an unobscured view of the relationship

Fracture Healing in Collagen-Related Preclinical Models of Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic bone dysplasia characterized by bone deformities and fractures caused by low bone mass and impaired bone quality. OI is a genetically heterogeneous disorder that most commonly arises from dominant mutations in genes encoding type I collagen (COL1A1 and COL1A2). In addition, OI is recessively inherited with the majority of cases resulting from mutations in prolyl-3-hydroxylation complex members, which includes cartilage-associated protein (CRTAP). OI patients are at an increased risk of fracture throughout their lifetimes. However, non-union or delayed

Condyle and mandibular bone change after unilateral condylar neck fracture in growing rats.

Unilateral fracture of the condylar neck in immature subjects might lead to mandible asymmetry and condyle remodelling. A rat model was used to investigate mandibular deviation and condylar remodelling associated with condyle fracture. 72 4-week-old male rats were randomly divided into three groups: an experimental group (unilateral transverse condylar fracture induced surgically), a sham operation group (surgical exposure but no fracture), and a non-operative control group (no operation). The rats were killed at intervals up to 9weeks after surgery, and outcomes were assessed using various me

[Experimental study of tangential osteochondral and chondral fracture of the patella].

It has been reported that trauma is not an only responsible factor for tangential osteochondral fracture (OF) in the patellofemoral joint, but other factors predisposing to OF are also involved in many clinical cases. The present investigator manually dislocated the patella of 25 young rabbits without anesthesia (group 1). In other 25 young rabbits (group 2), dislocation of the patella followed the experimental production of the patellar subluxation which was considered as an etiology of OF. The resulting patellar cartilage changes were compared between these groups of rabbits to clarify the r

Herbert screw fixation of osteochondral fractures of the patella.

Two cases of osteochondral fractures of the patella are presented. These osteochondral fractures have been reduced and fixed with the Herbert scaphoid screw. This screw has several advantages over conventional methods of treatment of osteochondral fractures in that the screw is entirely buried in the bony fragment and no portion of the screw lies proud. The differential pitch of the two threads in the screw allows interfragmentary compression. The size of the screw is such that minimal articular cartilage damage is incurred in inserting the screw and this method of treatment does not require a

Chondromalacia of trochlear notch after healing of olecranon stress fracture: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Chondromalacia of the trochlear notch and stress fracture of olecranon are uncommon injuries in the throwing athletes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report an 18-year-old high school pitcher who had persistent postero-lateral elbow pain after a healed olecranon stress fracture of the right elbow. Diagnostic arthroscopy revealed chondromalacia of the trochlear notch. RESULTS: After treatment with arthroscopic drilling and abrasion chondroplasty, he returned to competitive pitching 1 year later postsurgery. This rare association between chondromalacia and stress fracture of the olecr

Observations of abnormalities and age-related changes in the anconeal processes of swine.

Abnormalities and age-related changes in the anconeal processes of 60 boars were studied. Postmortem examination of both cubitus joints from 25 lame adolescent boars and from 5 of their nonlame contemporaries revealed cartilaginous tissue (termed cartilage plate) of varying size between the anconeal process and the ulnar diaphysis in 8 of the lame animals. The cartilage plate was fractured in both joints from 7 of these 8 animals, and joints from 6 animals with cartilage plate were associated with lesions of the semilunar articular cartilage and bone in the proximal portion of the ulna. Postmo

Comprehensive Proteomic Characterization of Articular Cartilage from Femoral Head Necrosis Patients.

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (AVNFH) is a progressive, multifactorial, and challenging clinical disease that causes hip pain and loss of hip joint function. Till now, the pathogenesis of AVNFH was not fully understood. In this study, we characterized cartilage protein profiles of patients with AVNFH and identified the potential proteins involved in the progress of AVNFH using proteomics technique. METHODS: Proteins from the cartilage of 6 patients (3 AVNFH patients and 3 fracture patients) were extracted and identified using label-free proteomics. AVNFH-responsive protei

Relationship between Enophthalmos and Orbital Volume Changes following Costal Cartilage Grafting for Traumatic Enophthalmos.

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic enophthalmos is a common complication of orbital wall fracture. Costal cartilage grafting is the preferred surgical approach for traumatic enophthalmos. However, widely used clinical guidelines have not been established regarding the optimal volume of costal cartilage grafts required to correct enophthalmos. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the changes in the orbital volume (OV) and enophthalmos before and after surgery in patients who underwent costal cartilage grafting, and to analyze the relationship between them. METHODS: The medical records of 12 patients

Exploring the Mechanism of Microfracture in the Treatment of Porcine Full-Thickness Cartilage Defect.

BACKGROUND: Microfracture has the most extensive clinical application because of its advantages of a single operation, unified process, and low operation cost. Because research on the repair mechanism of microfractures in the treatment of cartilage defects is not in-depth, this study aimed to elucidate the mechanism. PURPOSE: To identify the characteristic cell subsets at different repair stages after microfracture, systematically analyze the repair process of the defect area after microfracture, and investigate the mechanism of fibrocartilage repair. Chondral Damage After Arthroscopic Repair Techniques for Acute Bony Bankart Lesions: A Biomechanical Study.

BACKGROUND: Bony Bankart lesions can be encountered during treatment of shoulder instability. Current arthroscopic bony Bankart repair techniques involve intra-articular suture placement, but the effect of these repair techniques on the integrity of the humeral head articular surface warrants further investigation. PURPOSE: To quantify the degree of humeral head articular cartilage damage secondary to current arthroscopic bony Bankart repair techniques in a cadaveric model. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Testing was performed in 13 matched pairs of cadaveric glenoids wi

Management of Tibia Pilon Fractures With Ring External Fixation.

Tibia pilon fractures are complex injuries associated with ankle articular cartilage damage and soft tissue compromise. Modern circular external fixation methods are useful in their surgical management, especially for open fractures, severe soft tissue injury, fracture patterns with bone loss or compromise, severe cartilage loss, and certain patient factors. Surgical techniques involve ring block concepts, strategic distal tibia wire placements, hexapod fixators with software-guided bone alignment, and other uses of circular external fixation including ankle joint distraction, augmentation of

Cartilage Cap in Scaphoid Nonunions: An Indication of Stability and Biology?

PURPOSE: Scaphoid nonunion management is controversial and is dependent upon many factors without a clear algorithm. Traditionally, open approaches involved corticocancellous, vascularized, or nonvascularized structural bone grafting with internal fixation. Recent arthroscopic techniques have improved the ability to assess the stability of fractures and the need for bone grafting while preserving blood supply. We present our experience with arthroscopic-assisted scaphoid nonunion repairs that were discovered to have an intact cartilage cap at the nonunion site and thus were treated with screw

Establishment of rat ankle post-traumatic osteoarthritis model induced by malleolus fracture.

BACKGROUND: Malleolar fracture, which is present in 37-53% of human ankle osteoarthritis (OA), is the most common type of fracture in the ankle joint. In spite of this, no rat animal model has been developed for this type of injury to date. Here, we established a rat ankle post-traumatic OA (PTOA) model induced by malleolar fracture; this model will be useful in ankle OA research. METHODS: Two-month-old male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomized into 2 groups (n = 19 per group): 1) malleolus articular fracture, dislocation, and immediate reduction on the right joints and 2) malleolus artic

Delayed bone regeneration is linked to chronic inflammation in murine muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients exhibit skeletal muscle weakness with continuous cycles of muscle fiber degeneration/regeneration, chronic inflammation, low bone mineral density, and increased risks of fracture. Fragility fractures and associated complications are considered as a consequence of the osteoporotic condition in these patients. Here, we aimed to establish the relationship between muscular dystrophy and fracture healing by assessing bone regeneration in mdx mice, a model of DMD with absence of osteoporosis. Our results illustrate that muscle defects in mdx mice impact the

Arthroplasty of the proximal interphalangeal joint using costal cartilage grafts.

Seven intra-articular fractures in five patients with partial bone loss at the PIP joint were reconstructed using a graft of costal cartilage. In all cases there were total or partial cartilagenous defects of the proximal phalangeal side of the joint. Early treatment of two joints, using only costal cartilage grafts, resulted in bony ankylosis due to necrosis of the grafted cartilage. In five joints the grafted cartilage included osseous portions using the costo-osteochondral junction, leading to an average range of movement of 64 degrees with satisfactory clinical results. The technique is a

Contact stress aberrations following imprecise reduction of simple tibial plateau fractures.

Despite the well-recognized association between poorly reduced intraarticular fractures and late degenerative changes, current guidelines regarding the reduction precision necessary to avoid excessive cartilage pressures are based largely on anecdotal clinical observations. To gain a quantitative appreciation of the relation between local pressure elevations and fracture reduction imprecision, a simplified laboratory cadaver model of minimally displaced tibial plateau fractures was developed. Cartilage contact stress distributions were measured as a function of depressed fragment malreduction

Induction of traumatic temporomandibular joint ankylosis in growing rats: a preliminary experimental study.

There are many reports on the management of pediatric temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis. However, few authors have investigated the etiology of this disease in children. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of damage to both the condylar cartilage and disk in the induction of traumatic TMJ ankylosis during the growth period. The study was performed in growing rats by a common condyle fracture model. Intentional damage was performed to both the disk and condylar cartilage in the experimental group (n = 12), while the disk and condylar cartilage in the control group was left

β2-adrenoceptor signaling in chondrocytes regulates long bone growth, bone homeostasis, and fracture healing in mice.

Catecholamines are known to interact with bone and cartilage cells via binding to adrenergic receptors. Among these, the β2-adrenoceptor (β2-AR) plays a key role in mediating the effects of catecholamines on bone. Mice lacking the β2-AR systemically or specifically in osteoblasts show an increased bone mass. Previous studies further indicated an important influence of catecholamines on transdifferentiation of chondrocytes towards osteoblasts during endochondral ossification. Therefore, in this study, cartilage and bone phenotype as well as fracture healing of mice with a specific knockout of t
